Chapter 45 👑
Khadijah Daihaah's POV.
The next day morning was just like the mornings we'd been having before we left Katsina. We all are to have breakfast in Grandmother's chambers and that was exactly what happened. The only difference though is that this time it wasn't just the close family members of the El Khabir family, there were two other women alongside with Hama, Haya and Maya whom are Sultan's sisters.
So apparently sultan has two other brothers but I've never heard of them because both of them stayed away from their family as they want nothing to do with the royalty whatsoever. Another reason why no one speaks about them is that they left Katsina even before Sultan became the King. One of them lives in Lagos while the other lives in Ibadan.
So the two women are their wives and they are only her for the wedding. Now speaking off weddings, I've seen one of them at our wedding and I'm sure the other one didn't attend because I didn't see her. The one that I've met is a bit reserved and doesn't talk much. After introducing herself to me she didn't say anything again. The other one that I haven't one I haven't seen before however hasn't even spared me a glance. Both of their husbands are not present here so yeah, here we are.
"Qamrah, it's so nice to have you back. The house wasn't the same without you" The woman who did attend our wedding said as she flashed Mami a smile which Mami reciprocated. Speaking of smiles that was the first time I've seen her smile or even attempted to do so. She must've really loved Mami or is just on good terms with her.
"Thank you. It feels good to be back" Mami replied as she placed her cup of tea down.
The woman nodded slowly before she moved her gaze to Anty Rabi, "Rabiah, it must've been a moment of joy to have reconciled with your co wife since you've been all alone in this big place for what? Sixteen years? I know mother is here to help you but there are some things you just can't do which Qamrah here can" she said and although her tone was soft and low you can detect the mockery in it.
Anty Rabi who had been quiet all the while smiled widely, "I was just as delighted as you were when your husband married a second wife. And believe me; my happiness knew no bounds just like yours were. Speaking of which, how is she? I heard that she recently travelled abroad with your husband while you were in Kano right?"
That surely shut her up and no one else spoke. You can detect the tension in the air so thick like a blanket. The question she asked was still lingering in the air but the woman didn't answer. Instead, her face turned passive again as she continued eating her food without uttering a word more making Anty Rabi smile in triumph.
After breakfast, everyone was still quiet as we waited for Grandmother to say something since she always does, and she did.
"Rabiah here suggested something and demanded immediate effectiveness but I think I need permission from you Umar first" she said moving her gaze from Anty Rabi who had a smug look on her face to Hermano whom is not so discreetly glaring at her.
"What did she suggest grandma?" he asked, his voice calm but with an underlying anger.
Grandmother sighed, "She suggested that it will be better since Aneesah is approaching her sixth month that she should stay back here with her where she's take care of her while you go back to Abuja"
"No. my wife is not staying her" he answered without thinking twice making Anty Rabi glare at him.
"I wasn't asking you" she gritted out.
"But I was" Queen Dowager interjected as we all just kept quiet and watched them since we can't do anything.
"Mother, no—"
"Silence!" Sultan voice came as he moved his gaze to Anty Rabi. He has always been the man of a few words especially in quarrels like this so when he speaks, everyone listens. "Aneesah is not staying here for I see no reason for her to. And that is final. I don't want to hear anything more on this"
Anty Rabi looked down and hesitantly nodded knowing better that to go against his words. After that, he stood up and left followed by Grandmother leaving us all alone in silence since no one spoke again. That is, until someone decided to break the silence, again.
"I was ecstatic when I heard that you were expecting Aneesah, congratulations" the other woman who hasn't spoken all through said making Adda flashed her a smile as she answered with a thank you which she nodded too.
She turned to me, "And you Khadijah? When should we expect good news from you?" she asked bluntly and believe I choked on air that moment making Prince rub my back and hand me a glass of water immediately.
Is this woman alright?
We've just been married for a month.
And albeit she doesn't know the circumstances under which we got married still, how can she ask something like that.
"Aunt, I'm sorry but that is none of your business" prince said trying to be polite with her but even though I'm not looking at him I'm sure he's glaring at her right now.
Even after I took the water I refused to look at her, or anyone for that matter.
"Did I say something wrong? I just think that by now we should've gotten some good news right? Or is there a problem?"
What does she mean by 'problem'? And why the hell can'ts he mind her business?
God.
"What do you mean by problem?" Prince voiced out and my thoughts and this time he didn't try to hide how harsh he is being whatsoever.
"I don't know? Is she barren or something?"
I would've choked gain except that I feel very affronted to do that. Women like her make me wonder where they keep their brains before they talk. Like seriously how can she be so blunt and rude?
This time it wasn't Prince who answered because before he could someone beat him to it, "How long did she spent married before you gave birth after your marriage?" that was Mami and just like Prince she didn't hide the fact that she was being rude or anything.
That's where he must've gotten the attitude from.
"Qamrah what are you trying to say?" the woman asked and now when I finally looked up she was glaring at Mami who sat unaffected by it.
"Wait was it seven or nine years? I can't remember actually. Why don't you enlighten me?" Mami continued ignoring the daggers the woman and Anty Rabi kept sending her.
"That is enough" Anty Rabi said entering for the woman who looked like she's about to murder someone.
"It will only be enough when I say it is enough. And if you want it to be enough then I suggest you tell this friend of yours to mind what she says to my daughter because I won't tolerate it" Mami stated calmly though her eyes held fury.
"How dare you?" that was from Anty Rabi whose eyes looked like it was about to fall from their socket from how hard she was glaring at Mami.
"You have treated Aneesah how you wanted to because I'm not here but now that I am. Think twice before you think of even looking at my daughters in the wrong way. Trust me, you don't want to see how far I can go for them" she held Anty Rabi's gaze as she said that.
"Was that a threat?" Anty rabi asked as she stared at Mami in disbelief as if she couldn't believe she actually said that to her.
The corners of Mami's lips tugged upwards a bit, "No it was not a threat" she now smiled fully, "It is a promise" and with that she stood up and walked out leaving us with a fuming Anty Rabi and her friend.
Prince stood up too and held my hand and dragged me out just in time that Hermano did that too with Adda and slowly everyone left the two of the alone there.
I spent time with Prince for a short while before Samhah came and drag me to Adda's saying that we need to get ready for the last wedding event. Afterwards we all left to the event all together.
~*~
They came back from the event just in time for Magrib prayers. So, they stopped in Queen Dowager's chambers and prayed before they all went their separate ways as dinner will be sent to each of their chambers since they are tired.
Daihaah whom was walking towards the exit of the chambers stopped when she heard a muffled voice. As she got closer to a door the voice became clearer and she could hear snippets of the conversation. She didn't want to eavesdrop, so she shook her head and walked faster to get away so that she'll not hear anything that's none of her concern.
"Aysha I've seen it with my own eyes. Daihaah is having flashback and I know it's not the first time!" that sentence made her stop in her tracks. It's always a natural instinct to try and know more when your name is being mentioned. But maybe it might be another Daihaah right?
Don't be stupid have you ever heard of nay Daihaah in their family apart from you? Her subconsciousness retorted.
Her mother's name is being mentioned too so the person must be talking to her.
But wait...
Flashbacks?
What are they talking about? Daihaah wondered.
She walked a little further away from the room and checked if anyone is coming, she did the same with the way she came from and once she was convinced that no one is there but her, she tip toed to the room and placed her ears cautiously on the door to hear more.
She couldn't help it.
She was dead curious.
And curiosity kills the cat.
The person on the other line must've sad something to make the person in the room sigh, "I know you're worried about her, we all are but the girl is seriously suffering. I told you I saw her having a flashback, I must've said something that sounded awfully familiar to her. The pain she was in, I couldn't bear to see her in that sight again. Aysha you better than anyone should think of your daughter and what she's going through"
Daihaah's brows furrow as her lips part slightly in surprise. A soft gasp escaping them which made her quickly places her palm on her mouth to stop it from happening again. Her eyes widen a bit as her head tried to make sense out of the thing she just heard.
That voice belongs to Mami for sure. And another thing that's certain is that she's talking to her mother.
But what are they talking about?!
Mami released a frustrated sigh again, "It will be better to go through all the pain at once than having it over and over again. I promised to take care of your daughter and part of fulfilling that promise is making sure she doesn't be in pain again"
There was silence afterwards. Most probably Daihaah's mother saying something.
"Fine I get what you mean. Just make sure you hide it properly with you if you don't want her to know just yet. Most preferably in your room, she wouldn't suspect anything to be there. But Aisha remember; sooner or later Daihaah has to find out about this. We can't keep it a secret for long. We've kept it for as long as we can" Mami said and Daihaah could imagine her putting her hand on her head to massage her temples as she said this. "I promise, I'll continue keeping an eye on her for you. Nothing will happen to her. Bye, I'll call you later I have something to do now"
And that was all Daihaah needed to hear before she quietly sprinted out of the chambers despite the looks some of the people around the place gave her.
She didn't stop until she maintained a safe distance away from the chambers. When she stopped, she was heaving as she felt slight headache resurfacing. She looked back again and saw no one following her which meant no one knew she was there.
Now the thing is, what she just heard just confused her more than she ever was before. She thought the voices in her head and the headache she keeps getting due to them was nothing. But now, she was sure as hell there was something.
What is it that her mother and Mami are hiding from her?
And who else knows about this?
She wiped the sweat that has formed on her forehead and with a determined nod, she promised herself come what may she must find out what they are talking about.
She's tired off all these.
Mami who just got off the phone sighed bringing it down away from her ear to rest by her sides. She bit her lower lip as she slowly turned and face the door.
She knew Daihaah was there.
And she knew she heard everything.
After all, that was her plan.
Since no one wanted to tell the girl just yet, she knew she had to find a way to hint Daihaah so that she will figure everything out on her own. So she purposely let out the act that she was talking to her other and the place where she would hide it.
She knew Daihaah is smart and curious. She'll do the rest of the work on her own without anyone.
In spite of everything, she knew more than anyone else what's going on. Mami has more information and knowledge more than anyone amongst them because she is the only one that knows everything from the beginning to the end. Even things Aysha, Layla, and Aamir do not know.
She is the only one with the answer to every question everyone might have.
And trust her when she says, it better if Daihaah know this now.
Because Big Boss is about to make his move soon.
She raised her phone up again because she was sure that Daihaah must've left by now and no one is there. He dialed another number and placed the phone near her ear as she waited for the other person to pick up the call.
"Hello, Mami" Layla's voice came after two rings.
"Layla..." Mami breathed out as her voice became more determined, "Get your husband. It's time"
~*~
By the time Prince returned it was a little after seven pm. Daihaah is seated on the bed reading a novel, AFTER By Anna Todd when he walked in. After what happened earlier, she went straight to their chambers and stayed there. When Samhah called her asking of what happened she only told her that she was tired and so needed time to rest.
Obviously that was a lie. She sat down and thought hard about what they were talking of. On other days she would've thought it's nothing serious but hearing Mami's voice she knew this is serious.
This is a very serious situation and she has to figure it out by herself since no one is willing to help her.
Plus, she can't trust any of them for now. Not Mami herself, not Aneesah, not Umar and most definitely not Prince.
Thinking too much about it made her have another headache. She tried to sleep it off but the sleep just won't come. So, she prayed, took a cup of tea and settled on the bed reading a book and now that leads to now.
Prince furrowed his brows as he saw her, "Are you okay?" he asked sensing that something is definitely wrong with her. On normal days she would've been with either Aneesah or Samhah or if she is alone she would've been watching a movie on Netflix. She only reads a book if she is either angry or she's just down. And for her to be in that condition someone must've done something to make her that way. He's noticed that about her for the short that they've been married.
She looked up and feigned a smile, "Yeah I am. I was just bored" she replied though that was a big fat lie.
She is being cautious around him because right now there wasn't anyone she could trust until she figured out what Mami and Ummi were talking about. However, she won't let them know that yet.
Obviously he didn't buy that, but also didn't pry further knowing that maybe she's just not ready to tell him what's up with her yet.
He just nodded and went to the closet to change into something more comfortable. She continued reading her book and even when he came back she didn't raise her head to look at him.
"Do you want to watch a movie or something?" he asked and only then did she look up to look at him. She smiled a bit and shook her head no which only made him sigh.
"Well I guess I'm reading your book then"
Before she could ask him what he meant or react he had already took the book out of her hand and situated himself next to her acting as if he didn't take her book out of her hand. Instead, he leaned on the headboard too and started reading it.
"You do know I was reading that right?" It was rhetorical question which he, of course, ignored as if she wasn't talking.
She released a frustrated sigh, "Prince what are you doing? Don't you have a work to do or something?" She asked pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration. That book was the only thing keeping her mind from wandering back to the possibilities of what everyone is hiding from her and now he just took it.
He finally turned to look at her. He placed his index finger on his lips before pointing to the book, "I'm reading. Keep it down will you?" he replied before going back to what he was doing.
She inhaled and then exhaled placing her hand on her forehead to massage her temples as he started to get on her nerves. On normal days she would've just ignored him and pick out another book but because of the frustration she had been bottling up, he is already annoying her so much. She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself before she can do something she will definitely regret when he held her hand making her look at him.
He didn't say anything but just kept looking at her as if trying to figure out what's wrong with her and for a second Daihaah feared that he could see past the façade she put on. And if he asked her what will she say? That I overheard your mom and mine talking about some secret and I'm worried that you guys are hiding something from me? He'd think she's crazy because she has no evidence and no reason to over think this but until she has proof that they are hiding something from her, she won't say a thing about it.
"Stop thinking too much" His voice brought her out of her trance. His voice was missing the lark it had earlier and it was now lower and stern.
When he stared at her for more than a minute and couldn't actually tell what's wrong, he sighed, "Come here" he said pulling her close to him which she gave into without any squabble because honestly she was tired of over thinking everything.
It might not be that bad or maybe she's just assuming things.
He pulled her close to him so that her head lay on his torso as one of his arms is wrapped around her and the other is holding the book. Once he made sure she's comfortable, he held the book up and read the page she was at loud enough for her to hear and at the same time not raising his voice that high. The spot she was reaching just turned out to be the very end of the book, "I've read hundred of novels in my life. Most of them claiming that love was the centre of the universe. That it could heal any damage inside of us; that it was what we need to survive. From Darcy to Heathcliff I thought they were fools. That love was something fiction only found in worn pages of a book. But that has all changed since I met my Elizabeth Bennett. I never thought I'd find myself completely and utterly consumed by another until her. She took my hand and let me out of the darkness and showed me that whatever our souls are made of, hers and mine, are the same. I'm sorry, please forgive me. You once asked who I loved the most, it's you" he stopped as he came to the end of the paragraph.
He couldn't help but think of the words. Surely his life wasn't any close to how that of Harden and Tessa's was but at the same time he found Harden's words true.
Before Daihaah, he was a selfish egoistic man, hard headed that has neither respect nor care for anyone other than himself and believed that he had lost the meaning of life.
And then came Daihaah.
Somehow the girl that he underestimated broke his walls and taught him how to love again. She made him learn for once not to think only of himself and for her too. His life was messed up to bits before she came and somehow she picked up those broken pieces and put him back together only to be a better person.
She built up Prince Muhammad Aamir El Khabir from the pieces he once was and made him more humane.
But most importantly, she made him fall for her more than anyone without trying that hard.
He's be lying if he said that he regret not telling her about her about Muhsin when she lost her memories, he is that selfish.
Because no one will love her more than he can, and that's a fact.
Forgive me Daihaah, but I had to do it. He thought as he leaned down and placed a kiss on her head.
Daihaah on the other hand wasn't that affected with the words, in fact, she wasn't paying attention to it but rather her whole thought was on Prince.
He has been with her from the very start in his annoying ways. Though times without number they've fought, annoyed each other and gotten on each other's nerves but if she was really being honest with herself then she'll say that she wouldn't' trade those moments for anything because those were the times that brought them close.
But that thought; that thought only made her more determined to find out the truth.
It's time to find out the truth behind her evocations.
