I'd always loved the park in town when I was younger, so much that even as a teenager, I still hadn't lost my fascination and my need to investigate.
I had always been curious of the wood on the left side. It looked strange, yet also incredibly inviting to me. I amble towards it, casually glancing around to ensure no other human inhabitants were present. There was, but nothing of concern.
Listening carefully, I could hear the gentle rustle of leaves and a slight whoosh of a soft wind. It was so calm, it was as if it was hiding from an omnipotent power. I could only come to the conclusion that it must be the sun - the secret demon.
I venture in, hearing the sharp snap of aged twigs beneath my feet. The leaves had only recently grown, their bright green being weirdly more exciting than usual. As I closely observe them, a surge of power seems to flood through me, frightening me in a sense. My mind drifts...
"Mummy! Look what I found!"
A young girl rushes forward, her plaits flying behind her, red bows becoming untidy. She holds a small oak box - kept together with a padlock.
"Put that back darling, that isn't yours to find." The mother says calmly.
"It's so cool though!"
"It is, but it isn't yours, put it back."
The child scurries off, and digs a hole behind a tree with a thick, sturdy trunk.
They then leave, grinning as if there is no bad in the world.
I shake my head, confused by this vision. Is it possible that actually happened? There is only one way to find out.
I recognise the similarities, identifying what I need to find what this girl found. I use my delicate hand to dig away at the earth, sending it flying backwards. I keep going, then to scratch something that is not as soft.
It must be the box.
I fling the earth upwards with haste, then lunge forward and clasp the box my anticipating hands.
It still had a rusty padlock attached.
I shove it deeply into my rucksack, as I amble further into the woods. Each step I take, the light of the day begins to dim, as haunting shadows are created with towering trees.
I stop - noticing a perfect circle of bare soil. No vegetation of any sort.
Then once again, life begins to fade away...
A woman. Recognisable, yet unfamiliar, sits with her legs crossed in the centre of this empty space. She just draws an 'X', then gets up, and exits.
What does that have to do with anything?
Perhaps, I should dig there. Or, is that just asking for trouble? Probably is, so I'd better leave it.
A sudden pain creeps upon my leg, causing me to collapse in an untidy heap.
A sign!
I should dig here! In practically being told to!
I scoop up the soil with excitement, and there I see why I needed to find it.
There, is a silver key.
