"—Behind you!"

He let out a sharp breath, whirling around in surprise at his friend's sudden yell, and the earth started shaking beneath his feet.

"What's going on?" he got out, watching as the ground started to break away and melt into an incomprehensible puddle of light. "What's going on?"

"I don't know," the boy before him muttered, staring at him with wide, confused eyes as the concrete continued to dissolve into tiny pieces. "Hurry up and get out of there, though! If not, then you'll fall and you'll—"

He shuddered. "I can't."

"What do you mean?"

"I...I can't move-it's as if it's sucking me..." His voice trembled as he realised that whatever lied beneath the ground was only interested in taking him with it. "It's like some kind of force..."

The boy bit his lip as he considered his options, and he lunged forward, grabbing on to his hand and attempting to drag him away from whatever was eating the earth. "Just a bit more—I've almost got you, hang on—"

But his palm was slippery from sweat, and though he tried his hardest to hold on, his fingers slipped and brushed past the outstretched hand his friend offered him.

He heard a yell; a desperate attempt to shout his name, but he was already too far away.

He continued to fall.
