Chapter 3

Kylo

If greed lands you in hell, why is heaven covered in gold?

Xander snickers at the words while I stare at them longingly again. The words carved in rubies right in front the elevator taunting us. Word has it, Lillith carved them herself. The doors of the glass elevator behind them closed as they always were. Even with all it’s beauty, Zion wasn't a place we liked to be in.

Zion is the only place with a lush green field and a sky without darkness. Right at the center lay the long glass tube reaching upto to the sky, and as everyone believe, to Heaven. It only opens its doors once a year to only one person, and as usual it isn't me. At first the place might seem enchanting, but with time you just realize it is a place of disappointments and crushed dreams. It’s quite weird how no one sees the pain before hope. But that might just mean the human part of us still lives on.

None of the towns are nearby but people set up camps to witness which lucky soul got the ticket to Heaven this time. Let alone stragglers like us, every hopeful one has already gone back. Except Raya Miller. I know I should be more hopeful after watching someone make it but I just feel dejected.

Would it even matter if I make it to Heaven? Would I be able to look mom in her eyes and be the same kid she left behind? Or would my darkness stay with me there as well? I don't think I would want to go to Heaven anymore. Not after what I’ve done. Not after I let her innocent angel turn into a monster capable of nothing but nightmares. But will I go anyway? Just to see her again? I don't know.

Besides, there are so many more people who deserve peace more than I do. Little Andrea from school who's here for killing a rapist. John Collier who stole money to feed his baby daughter. Even Xander who shot Sylas just because he killed me.

“For someone who claims to be at peace, they sure love to flaunt, don't they?” Xander rolls his eyes as he says the words i’ve been thinking for a while now. The demons they didn't have while they lived seemed to creep into them after death. Our only fault was that we couldn't hold the demons at bay a little while longer. That we couldn't play their nice little game of pretending to be perfect. That we struggled to survive and did what we felt like we had to do.

“It’s just in everyone's nature, I guess. You show off the perks of being an Elite all the time too.” I reply, instantly regretting it as Xander smirks and starts bragging again. I sigh as I ignore him and look at the notification in my phone again.

Congratulations on your first kill… Aria Reid.

She died for nothing but a stupid project and it doesn't even make a difference to my grade. Just as everyone guessed, Aaron is already at the top with thirty four souls in barely a week. Kathy isn't that far behind either, she just has seven souls less than he does. And here I am feeling like i’m going to be sick for taking just one soul away.

Aria Reid, either she has killed my chances of ever getting a ticket to Heaven, or she has done absolutely nothing. And the worst part is, there have been rumors that most the new teenage souls are going to be put in Edifice Phantoms, for Lucifer's entertainment of course. The thought of meeting Aria just makes me want to die. Again. What would I even say to her? Hey, I’m Kylo. The guy indirectly responsible for your death because of a killer game. I warned you, kind of. Want to be friends?

Words said to me years ago come back crashing as I try to hide that I was feeling bad for being responsible for a soul being here. We are supposed to be ruthless. Ignoring everything Xander just said, I mutter, “Echo of the Living.”

“Still divided are the Dead.” he replies without missing a beat. Those are the first words that were spoken to us after what was supposed to be eternal darkness. I didn't think I would have a life after being shot in the chest. But a hole in my heart does no good to stop the guilt I feel. Stop it. You can't make it to Heaven anyway. If you don't make a life in Hell either, what will you do?
