Chapter 1

Kylo

I always loved to hear the humans on earth saying their classes were hell. I can't wait till they start attending classes in actual hell. At least this is my last year here. For some reason, I was put in one of the best school in hell, Edifice Phantoms, and hence the twenty nine others in my class are waiting impatiently for Lucifer to finally grace us with his presence.

But I am just mostly bored, maybe a little sleepy as well. Lucifer always comes with a huge speech no one really cares about. It's not fair we have to pay attention to that just because he is the king of hell. On the other hand, Queen Lillith is amazing, instead of boring speeches, she carried jokes at which people actually laugh at. And as everyone knew, she is the only reason hell is still surviving.

With half a mind to skip class I walk out towards the old prisons. No one bothered to renovate them, so it remains to be the only quite place in this hell hole. I run my fingers across the name I carved into the stone almost three years ago, Kylo, the sky. It doesn't feel like it belongs to me anymore, that name was given to a kid with a single mother who made him her whole world. Don't. You don't deserve to remember her.

“Aren't supposed to be at class?” My head whips up in surprise. No one usually came all the way down here. A man with dark hair and an even darker suit glares at me, his red eyes feel like they could see right through my soul. He's definitely not the janitor.

“Yes, sir. I was just going to go there.” The words tumble out my lips before my mind catches up to the fact that I just lied to the king of hell. I can't just say I hate him to his face, can I? Sure, go ahead and try that. You’ll get another trip an actual prison.

He smirks, obviously catching my lie but says nothing about it. Instead he just walks towards the staircase, “You better get back before I reach there Kylo.”

I blink at his words, surprised that he remembers me, before taking off running. Panicked by his words, I don't notice as my shoulder collides against his.

A girl with brunette hair. Laughter, silence, panic, pain. She hits play. Mom. Snickering with Xander as we crack the safe open. A voice screaming… my voice screaming.

I trip, confused by the images in my mind. But I have no time to spare as I see Lucifer fading away. I hope he doesn't teleport directly to my class before I can get there. I curse the person who decided to keep the senior most classes on the fifth floor as I go up the staircase.

The black sky glows alive with red thunder outside the windows. I watch as a few kids continue playing outside without being bothered by the rain, their dark uniform getting more wet with the black water by the second. The elites stay to a corner snickering.

I always envied them. It felt like I was back at earth when I watched them, the rich and famous ruling others lives indirectly. The only difference between hell and earth is that there are less monsters here.

I stumble into the class, looking for a seat farthest from Lucifer. I think I'm late, but he doesn't seem to notice as he continues right where he left off. My body screams for a little water and some rest but I don't want to risk pissing off the king, again.

“For this year,” he continues, “your assignment will be to collect souls. You know the rules, personal killing, causing natural disasters and appearing to them is not allowed. Everything else is fair game.”

I internally groan, this can't be happening again for the seventh time in a row. You’d think the king of hell would have some creativity but all you get is cliché ideas he stole from his wife. And yet the whole class erupts into cheers, Kathy and her friends group together to discuss their plans and Aaron scribbles something in his notes. If Lucifer turns this into a competition again with-

I’m dragged out of my thoughts as the devil clears his throat and starts his well practiced speech again, “The leader board will be put up at your Defense against the Gaurdian Angel and Inducing Nightmares 104 classes.”

I had to physically stop myself from facepalming at his words. Everyone knew who would be on top, Lucifer's own son, Aaron. Yet they looked so excited.

I could do the bare minimum and collect around two souls to get finally get out of school. Only people who fail are the bottom three, and the elites have made that their personal space. The law indirectly dictates that no Elites can be failed, so they get away with it each time.

I roll my eyes as Lucifer finally leaves and the class erupts into chaos. I sigh knowing I have to actually get some work done now. Xander walks over to me, and I can already tell he is going to start bragging about his Elite status again.

“I’m so glad I killed our traitorous partner before you did right now.” TJ starts off again. “Now I can just eat free food and play with Roofus while you start working hard.”

“Roofus has to be the worst name you can give to a blood hound.” I murmur.

He ignores my words completely and continues, “What're your plans then? I heard Aaron has something big going on. And Kathy has been preparing for this for almost seven years now.”

I could tell him my plan, but he will probably just tell me what an idiot I’m being. Besides, two souls are all I need. I can just make some random truck driver fall asleep ans cause an accident. Or maybe I can scare cats into murder, that will surely keep the humans entertained.

My original plan which I had made up as soon as I heard about this contest can only work by a long shot, and it sounds stupid if I say it out loud. So I just shrug, pretending not to care.

People trust quite easily, that makes it more fun to betray them. If I do use my old plan, and somehow it works out, perhaps only the paranoid ones may survive.
