Harry walks over to the lock and examines it closely. I stay a few steps behind him while he takes it in his hold and looks at it more. He then grabs the knob and turns it but it only makes a raspy noise from being too rusty.
"Shit," Harry groans and rubs his temple with his fingertips. "It won't open. It's locked and this door is fucking- ugh." He pushes the door then kicks it hard to no avail.
"Your gonna break a damn leg calm down. We just," I look at the lock and see the tainted red on it. It looks like it had smeared over all this time with the red color on the edges and covering small portions. The metal feels cool on my palm and a musty smell like something died invades my nostrils. "Well it's a lock so there might be a key."
"Well how do you expect to find that key?" He raises his eyebrows and leans across the unopened door.
I groan. "How am I supposed to know? I don't know, it's probably still in the house but it would probably take a long time to find it either way. It might not even be here- the lock looks real old."
Another sigh leaves Harry's lips. It seems we are filled with an endless amount of sighs. That or this place is just a bowl of disappointment.
"It's so dusty," He mutters all of a sudden.
"Well what do you expect? It's probably a thousand year old door with nobody to clean it," I say sarcastically. He eyes me for a second before looking back at the door. I examine his face for a second too and see a small indent form on his cheek which means he is biting it. Neither of us say a word for at least a minute while we stare mostly at the door. I steal some occasional glances of his face and he doesn't notice.
Harry starts shaking his, almost to himself. "No no no. There has to be something. We didn't get this far to be met with nothing." He lifts himself off the door and starts pacing- well as much as you can pace in a narrow hallway.
Suddenly he pauses and his eyes widen. He swiftly turns to the door and begins dusting it off with his hands. At first he seems in deep thought and troubled with himself. He continues patting away at the heavily dusted door which causes my eyes to get bit watery. I start sneezing and he looks at me worried but I dismiss it with the shake of my head and wave of my hand. I just get a bit sneezy with dust.
I begin to question what he is doing but he cuts me off with a deep gasp. "I knew it!" His eyes glow in excitment and he moves closer to what he discovered.
"What is it?" I ask and go to the area he is looking at.
"Writing. Words. Look," He points to the letters almost near the top of the metal door. I take a moment to read them.
Where the darkness lay
To where there is no sky, no sun
An area filled with the misery of the ancients
A place of Mors
To where the souls rest and a demon crawls
To where darkness never hides
I move my mouth along with the words but don't speak them aloud and I see Harry doing the same.
"Another riddle. Or probably message in this case." He says and I hum in agreement.
"Do you think it's telling us where the key is? Maybe?" He faces me and a hopeful look spreads throughout his face causing his eyes to glimmer in all this dark.
"Maybe," I reply. "But we need to figure it out first," I add.
"Yeah. But not here. Not in this disgusting place. Let's go to your room." He takes another quick glance at the riddle and then looks at me.
"Mhmm. Okay, but are we gonna memorize it or...?" I trail off and look at him questionably. His eyes dart down to my chest where my camera is usually perched with the exception of today. I left it in the room since I didn't think we'd need it. Turns out I was wrong.
"Shit, yeah, you're right," He rubs his fingers against his lips. "Umm, you didn't happen to bring your phone, did you?"
"No. I put it in the drawer so I wouldn't- uh, lose it again." I murmur. We still have to decipher the meaning of the text and now we also have this riddle. It might be hard but hopefully we'll figure it out and be another step closer to solving this whole knot.
"Uhhh," He drags it out. "Then I guess we have to memorize it."
"Ugh," I groan. "To make it easier lets just split it in parts. I'll memorize the beginning and finish to where it says," I look back to the riddle and choose the sentences. "An area filled with the misery of the ancients. You get the rest."
"Sure. Let me just..." He faces the door and nods his head, mouthing the words. I do the same and three minutes later we are ready to leave.
We carefully walk out the narrow space into the musty room and I repeat my lines in my head so I won't forget them.
Where the darkness lay
To where there is no sky, no sun
An area filled with the misery of the ancients

"Quick. Write it down." We barge into my room and I grab the closest pen and paper there is to write it on before we forget. I write my part a bit messy in a fast pace.
"Hurry up hurry up I'm about to forget it," He rushes. I steady the pen in my hands and motion him to tell me what he memorized.
"Um uh," He squeezes his eyes shut and the words tumble down his lips in chops. "A place of Mors, to where the uh," He pauses. "souls, rest?" His voice goes higher in the end like he isn't sure of it but I write it regardless. "and a um demon cr-crawls, to where darkness never...hides!". He exclaims at the end and his eyes fly open with a large grin.
"Ha. Told you I could do it," He smiles to himself.
"It seriously wasn't even that hard I don't know why such the struggle," I laugh. There should be a word for a laugh that ends as soon as it starts. Those are the laughs I usually do, almost like a one syllable laugh and nothing more except the smile still stays on my face.
Way to go, English language.
"Eh. Let's just solve it," He laughs a small laugh and I bring the paper with me to the bed as he follows suit.
Our backs press against the headboard and I adjust the pillow so our backs can ease onto it.
"Let's see. Okay let's just start off with the first sentence I guess. We'll figure it out and then move to the next. Yeah?" He looks to me with bright eyes.
"Yeah." He gets little closer to me causing our arms to touch and I blush at the contact. His head bows down in a smile and his dimple craters on his cheeks. I let out a quiet laugh and he looks at me with an expression that makes me want to melt.
I hold myself together and clear my throat.
"Uh yeah. Okay 'Where the shadows of darkness lay, to where there is no sky, no sun' so what do you think it means?" I lay the paper in my lap and think it over.
"It sounds like a pretty dark place to me," He laughs but then his face turns to serious. "I don't know, no sky no sun. Hmmm..."
"Well if there's no sky or sun then it has to be like, inside, right?"
"Probably," I say. "Where the shadows of darkness lay. Somewhere dark then. So in a dark place most likely inside of somewhere."
"Mhmm. So that part is kind of figured out. The next part is," He gently takes the paper from my hands and for a second our fingers brush causing me to hold my breath. "An area filled with the misery of the ancients, a place of Mors."
"The ancients part can be...uh... obviously something old. So old place? Old house? This house is pretty old," I shrug.
"Old people maybe. Old, miserable, ugly ass wrinkly people," I lightly slap him on his arm and he yelps.
"Hey what was that for?" He looks amused yet slightly pained. Well that's what he gets.
"Respect your elders you idiot. Don't call them ugly asses," I try to hold in my smile but I fail and it breaks through anyway.
"Wow Emery. I'll remember this moment next time I insult an elder," He says sarcastically and rolls his eyes jokingly. I adjust myself from all the moving and agree with him. While adjusting, I end up a little closer than before.
"But seriously of the ancients I think it's talking about people. Next part, a place of Mors. What does mors mean?" He asks me. Luckily I remember Daisy telling me this so I proudly show off. It's not always you get to show of to Harry Styles.
"It means death in latin. A place of death then. That could mean like where somebody died. But who in specific?"
"No idea," He says. We stay silent for a moment thinking of an answer. I fumble with my fingers and Harry slightly chews on the inside of his cheek.
I give up after bit later and alert Harry on it. "We'll get back to it later let's just read the rest. To where the souls rest and demons crawl, to where darkness never hides. To where souls rest? In heaven maybe. Souls rest in heaven."
"But what about the demons crawl part? Demons don't go there," He tells me. I think it over and agree. Guess not.
"How about a... graveyard? Cemetery I mean. Souls rest there and demons might too."
"Oh yeah huh. Hey! Yeah a cemetery because a place of death they die there and there might shadows and darkness."
"Haha I knew it I'm a genius. I always knew I had it in me,"He smirks to himself and doesn't hold it in when he looks at me. "And also the ancients part kind of makes sense. Not too sure about the sky and sun thing though."
"Agreed,"I tell him. "But it's worth a shot. Now where can we find a cemetery?"
[The way Harry smiled at her is the second gif in the video on the side. Plus it's adorable. :)]
