A backwards sentence has the ability to strip the power and flow from your writing. Scan your story for sentences with a comma right in the middle; chances are it could be reversed for a cleaner read!

Dashing through the field, Liam leapt for joy. Watching the setting sun, he felt a tremendous sense of peace.

Let’s flip-flop both sentences:

Liam leapt for joy as he dashed through the field. He felt a tremendous sense of peace as he watched the setting sun.

There are times when a backwards sentence is the better choice, but nine times out of ten, straight-forward is better!
