It was another cold winters day in Redstonia, the small engineering town plagued by what felt like a never ending blizzard. The island would have appeared completely deserted if it weren't for the lights shining behind every house's drawn curtains, everybody hiding away from the cold. The sky was a dark, ominous grey, thick clouds. obscuring the sun and making the world appear dark.
Olivia shivered as another violent gust of wind howled outside the walls of her house, subconsciously tugging her thick red jacket more tightly around herself. It was warm inside the building, but simply hearing the wind as she watched snow pile up outside the windows made her feel colder. As much as Olivia loved everything about Redstonia, she couldn't deny that she often missed Beacontown's significantly warmer weather.
The thought of Beacontown pulled Olivia from her trance. She shook her head to herself, continuing to work about in her tiny kitchen. Delicious smells were quickly beginning to drift through the building, distracting from the nasty weather outside. Olivia's cat wove through her legs as she worked, purring and rubbing his head against her as a subtle beg for whatever smelled so tasty, despite the fact that his own food bowl was filled to the brim.
Olivia absent-mindedly bent down to stroke the cat's head, feeding him a tiny piece of chicken. She shuddered again, the kitchen window rattling as the window tugged at it. The awful blizzard had them trapped inside all day already. Not that she had intended to go anywhere, even with better weather.
Once more reminded of what she was doing, Olivia began scooping out some of the food she had cooked. Her cat watched dejectedly as she left the kitchen, before glumly returning to his own bowl of boring cat food.
Walking down the hallway, Olivia reached out and carefully pushed open the wooden door of the guest bedroom. It was dark inside, but Olivia flipped a switch beside the door and instantly flooded the room with light. There was a loud groan in protest, a lump underneath the covers on the bed squirming.
"Come on." Olivia said, giving the figure a gentle prod. "Get out of there, I made you soup."
There was another moan in protest, before Jesse poked her head out with a sleepy expression. Her thick chestnut hair stood out in all directions, strands dangling over her pale face.
"You look like something that can scare kids in the dark." Olivia commented with a chuckle, reaching over and brushing some of the hair out of her friend's eyes.
At first Olivia had been a little annoyed when Jesse's reckless antics out in the snow had gotten her sick with a cold on her first day there. But looking after her friend the past few days had actually been nice, if anything, it reminded Olivia a lot of the time she, Jesse and Axel used to live in their first tree-house together. She was definitely the more sensible member in the group back then, and often ended up being the one to look after and patch up the others.
"Breakfast?" Jesse asked groggily, her eyes landing on the bowl of soup Olivia held.
"Dinner, actually." She corrected, sitting down on the side of the bed and holding the bowl out to Jesse. "I didn't want to wake you, but you already slept through lunch. Here."
Jesse sceptically looked down at the food Olivia offered her, clearly not very hungry. Then she looked back up at Olivia, giving her her famous puppy dog eyes.
"Nu-uh, I'm not feeding you, eat it yourself." Olivia said sternly, promptly placing the bowl of soup in Jesse's hands. "You've got a cold, you're not dying of the plague."
Jesse mumbled something sulkily, before giving in and beginning to eat the soup.
"By the way, I sent a letter to Beacontown." Olivia said, as she got up and started to clean away the assortment of tissues that were scattered about the bed and floor. "Just to let that intern of yours know you'll be extending your stay by a few days. I don't want you travelling back in this weather, not while you're sick."
Jesse only nodded, not seeming to hear half of what her friend had just said. Olivia glanced over at her with a bit of a frown. When she had first suggested Jesse stay a little longer until she's all well again, a few days ago, Jesse had protested that she'd be fine to head back. The fact that Jesse suddenly didn't mind staying a few extra days was a little worrisome.
"Done?" Olivia asked after a few minutes, when Jesse pushed away the half-filled bowl.
Deciding against bugging her friend to finish the food, Olivia took the remaining soup and simply placed it on the bedside table. She picked up the mug she had also brought from the kitchen, which Jesse accepted a bit more eagerly. However after taking one sip of the warm drink, she pulled up her nose and looked over at Olivia with disgust.
"What the hell is this?" She asked, sounding like she had just drank toilet water.
"Oh, just some herbal tea." Olivia responded. "It'll help you get better."
"I thought it was hot chocolate." Jesse mumbled, looking down at the tea in disappointment. "This tastes like crap."
"You're so spoiled." Olivia remarked, giving Jesse a playful nudge with her elbow as she sat down again. "It's not that bad, drink up."
"If I throw up it's your fault." Jesse replied, before reluctantly drinking more of the tea. She didn't seem to find it quite as disgusting as she pretended to.
Ignoring her friend's comment, Olivia reached over and pressed her hand against the side of Jesse's face. She clicked her tongue sympathetically, shaking her head. "No wonder you're not yourself tonight."
Jesse didn't respond, only lifting the mug again and drinking the last of the tea. She flopped back down onto the pillows when Olivia had taken the mug, pulling the fluffy blanket further over herself.
"Is there anything else you need before I leave?" Olivia asked her, absent-mindedly tucking Jesse in like a child.
"Do you have to?" Jesse asked softly, once more giving Olivia the large puppy eyes.
"You want me to stay?" Olivia asked, although she didn't sound surprised. When Jesse wasn't feeling well, she usually didn't want to be left alone. Olivia almost wanted to scold herself for forgetting that detail about her friend.
Jesse nodded, rolling onto her side so she was facing Olivia. She pouted, adding to the pleading look on her face.
"Okay, okay." Olivia chuckled.
She got up from the bed, turning off the light again and bathing the room in darkness. Jesse eagerly shuffled to the side, making space beside her for Olivia to lay down. The moment the engineer did, Jesse cuddled up to her like she was a giant teddy bear. Olivia chuckled as Jesse wrapped her arms around her, subconsciously ruffling the shorter girl's hair in the dark.
A sad smile formed on her face, thinking back to the many times back in the tree-house she did the exact same thing. Things had changed a lot since then, but she missed those times a lot. Even though they were all happy with their new lives, they weren't nearly as close as they used to be back then.
Olivia shook her head to herself, pushing the thoughts away. She leaned her head back on the pillow, closing her eyes as she listened to the wind gusting outside. Suddenly she enjoyed the foul weather, deciding that it just made them feel even more cosy.
"Olivia?" Jesse's voice interrupted the engineer's thoughts.
"Yeah, Jesse?"
"Could you read me a story?"
"Jesse, seriously, how old are you?"
"Fine."
Olivia chuckled at her friend's words, shaking her head in the dark. Jesse, having been already half-asleep anyway, didn't seem to mind her request being rejected too much. She simply nestled up closer to the engineer, her stuffy breathing beginning to even out as sleep consumed her.
Smiling to herself, Olivia closed her own eyes again. Even though she had only intended to stay with her friend a little while, she soon began to drift off as well, falling asleep to the sound of her friend's rhythmical breaths and the howling wind.

Fluffy sequel to the first one shot of the challenge to end off with!
actually_star had been the one to give me this idea, so thank you so much for that! When I got the prompt wind, I immediately thought blizzard (I've been playing the long dark, okay, I have blizzards on the brain) and then realised it could be the perfect excuse to write the sequel! I did stray a bit from the suggestion I was given, but I really like how it turned out at the end of the day-
I need to write these two more, seriously, they're adorable
I actually wrote this one shot (or most of it) twice, because the first time I worked on it, everything I had written got deleted. At first I had trouble rewriting it, and I felt like the first few chapters sounded really forced and rushed. But I eased into it soon enough, and at the end of the day I like this version a lot more!
I love how much of a bean Jesse is in this-
Anyhow, that marks the end of this challenge! I'll be returning for another seven-day challenge in the near future though (you can see I changed the book's title) so keep an eye out for that!
I'll probably do another one next week, or the week after that, depending on what my schedule does, because I had a ton of fun with this! Until then, expect some word generator based one shots in my regular one shot book, because I love playing around with this challenge!
I hope you guys enjoyed these seven one shots, and I'll see you again with more another time!
