{34}The End of The Beginning

Today is the last day.

Last day of what?

School.

Today is the last day of school. After today, there will be no more school for three months. Three months free of school.

The average student would be jumping for joy, but I'm no average student. On the contrary, I don't want the school year to end. That only means that I'm growing up. I don't want to grow up. I want things to stay the same. I'm happy with the ways things are right now. Why does it need to change?

I already know that things will not be the same next year. How? Zoey and I will have the same class for orchestra, but we get to have two electives next year. We didn't choose the same one.

See? Things are changing alright.

*****

Seventh period. The last period of the day before school starts. Just like in all my other classes, I could do anything I want for the whole period. Well, except leave without telling the teacher, and committing a felony.

Zoey was playing a board game with Lindy while I watched. Well, that is until Diego came up to me.

"So, how's your day been?" he asked.

"Horrible, want to know why?" I asked sweetly. He nodded his head. "Because I've seen you way too much for my liking today."

At least it wasn't that much of a lie.

"Of course you would say something like that," he said.

"I have a question for you," I said.

"What?"

"Why had you been helping teachers this whole week?"

He has been helping all of the teachers for some reason. He has never done that before which is why I'm curious.

"Well," he said, "I thought 'hey, what's the best way to end the school year?' then I was like 'by doing favors to everyone I know."

That explains him helping everyone in the classrooms. He even helped Heaven. The same Heaven he's had a long lasting rivalry with.

"Wait," I said. "You haven't done a favor for me."

"Oh, but I have," he said, "It was the same favor that I did for Zoey. I saved her the stress of helping while you, I'm sorry for saying this, but you really needed the help."

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"Figure it out."

*****

I remember the first time he told me to 'figure it out'. It was the first time he talked to me. He had wanted me to figure out who his sister was.

I kept thinking about what he said. About already doing a favor for me. I kept thinking back to anything he would've helped me with, but my mind went blank. What makes Zoey stressed?

Hmm, let's see.

My complaining.

Major grade assignments and tests.

Playing her violin in front of everyone.

My shyness.

Which one could it-

Wait.

Wait a minute.

-flashback-

"Was that what you were planning?" I heard Zoey ask someone. I was about to enter, but upon hearing her voice I decided to wait to see (well, hear) who she was talking to.

"Of course it was. Am I a genius or am I a genius," a male voice said. It was Diego.

"How did you know it was going to work though?"

"Like I said this morning, all you have to do is observe and connect the dots. I've learned Vanessa's ways through that."

What?

"Although," Diego said, "It almost didn't work because you didn't listen to me. I told you not to raise your hand!"

"Well, to be fair, I never listen to you," Zoey said. "Plus, how was I supposed to know what you were planning? You didn't even tell me!"

-Flashback ended-

Oh.

That makes sense.

I looked back at Zoey and Lindy. They were still playing the board game. By the looks of it, I think the game will end with a tie. Zoey will not be okay with that. She can be a little competitive every now and then. Okay, so maybe a 'little' is an understatement.

*****

Just as the bell rang, I departed with them. I told them I had to do something first and that then I'll meet them outside.

I walked around the hallways, keeping my out for something. What exactly am I looking for? Well, it's actually a who?

I spotted him saying goodbye to his friends. When I reached him, he was walking towards the school's entrance.

"Diego!" I called out.

He turned around upon hearing my voice. He gave me a questioning glance. "Yeah?" he asked.

"Thank you," I said. Then, I walked away, opening one of the school's front doors to leave. I met up with Zoey and Lindy once I was fully outside.

"Bye," I told Zoey when her car arrived. She's the only one I'll see during the summer. Lindy had already left.

Once Zoey was gone, I walked around, looking at the other students. All of them were eager that school is over. Different groups of friends saying goodbye. t least, it wasn't a permanent goodbye. Not yet.

I felt my phone vibrate and I took it out. It was a text from Google Hangouts. It was Diego. Don't ask how Diego got my email because I honestly don't know. He probably got it from Zoey.

Are we on good terms?

That was what the message said.

I quickly replied back.

Yeah, but if we get a class together next year don't expect me to welcome you with open arms.

I then put my phone back and looked back at the school. I then looked towards the school next door, Willow Elementary. Oh how I miss being there. I looked back at my current school again.

"Until next time," I whispered.
