Challenge 5
They think they have real problems.
The public is oblivious to my agency. They're all concerned with the Treaty of Versailles and the war. They think they're brilliant. Honestly, only 16 years they've been flying planes. They're so naive.
The commander calls me naive. He says years in the future, even the agency's technology will look pathetic. I say who cares. We help eliminate invasive extraterrestrial forces. Yes, my country sends troops to wars among humans, but that's not what my agency is concerned with.
Aliens is what they call them.
Dead is what I say.
A blast of heat sends my aircraft rolling sideways. I curse, grabbing hold of the controls.
Why here? Normally I see them coming. Normally I'm able to lure them away from big cities, eliminate in uninhabited areas. Vancouver is a nice place. On the coast, oblivious people. Of course, if they're still oblivious after this then they're really just stupid.
I check my surroundings, trying to find the craft that hit me. I see it on my rear. I try to swerve away from the city towards the water, but another plane crashes into me. Everything around me goes wobbly, telling me how bad the damage I've taken is. How didn't I see that ship approaching? What kind of shields are they using? Invisibility? That's impossible.
"You're naive," the commanders voice echoes. I shoot at the second plane, which is the closer target. The craft, which is saucer shaped with a bubbled centre, is engulfed in flames for only moments before the orange flickers disappear and it's charging towards me again.
"What the-" I'm cut off as the wing on my plane bends with contact from the UFO. Through the glass bubble, I catch a glimpse of the creature.
It's human, not truly, but the resemblance to a person is exact. He has a thick neck and wide jaw. Uncut hair and wild eyes.
He looks crazy, especially as he once again charges towards me.
The other one hits me first, sending me crashing into the charging one. For a moment I'm suspended, sitting in my crumpled plane, squished between two UFO's. Then they back away and I fall, just able to grab the parachute and the gun kept stowed away in the cabin. As I drop, I turn, noticing an odd latch on the bottom of both of their ships.
A weakness? It's worth a shot, quite literally. I hit the latch of the second ship and a trapdoor falls open. The wild eyed man - alien - falls, nothing to stop him. His unmanned ship is close to follow. I shoot the second and watch, this time a beautiful woman - alien - falling out. I catch a glimpse of her face as she falls, her expression twisted into something murderous.
You monster.
Watching them fall, it occurs to me. If they were scared of death, then they have feelings. Thoughts? Morals, even? Common sense?
I'm so naive. I'm the alien to them. I'm a monster.
