Challenge 3
"Kyla, did you hear that?" I nudge her body, sitting upright. Kyan wakes up too.
"What was that?" Echoing footfalls echo around us in the abandoned warehouse.
"It's probably a harmless-"
"PACK!" Kyan leaps to his feet and grabs his backpack, Kyla and I quickly following.
"How did they find us?" Kyla hisses, sprinting away.
"They have access to the satellite network. They traced us," I grunt, running behind.
"You know, when they brought me here with Kyla, I thought it wasn't as bad as everyone said. I was so wrong," Kyan chuckles to himself.
"They said I was sentenced to death for what I did-"
"Hey, what you did wasn't your fault," Kyla cuts me off. "And this is death. If they just killed us, there's no glory. This way, they can make examples of us," she says.
"They're gaining," I glance back, seeing a pack scramble after us, each with weapons grasped in their hands.
"Split!" Kyla shouts, veering off. I don't hesitate. We know where to meet up, it's not like this is the first time it's happened. This is just one of the closest times.
A loud curse escapes my lips as a hand suddenly grabs my throat. They had others waiting for us.
This is how I'll die.
"Ahhhhhh!" Kyla punches my captor. I don't wait to run off to help Kyan. I kick the guy who's strangling him, pulling Kyan to his feet.
Whoever decided it was a good idea to send all the fugitives to Earth was sick. Now that the planet is dying, every criminal of Edorian gets sent here. It's a death sentence, like Kyla said. Even if we don't die right away, we're sure to die a painful death by the hands of the elements, another fugitive, or a pack, government operating groups that patrol Earth as a job, killing any fugitives who've been here too long.
The three of us have escaped death for years, but our encounters with packs have never been this close.
A boy shoots out of nowhere and everything slows down. Knife, blood, Kyla falling. I watch as her eyes darken fast, my own vision blurring.
I hadn't even seen him coming. I couldn't have saved her like I saved my brother, even if his life cost me mine. He was going to die. The only way to save him was to kill that man that would have hurt Timmy. I saved Timmy, but I couldn't save Kyla.
I fall to my knees as I cry.
It's over.
There's a flash of light as a girl with a gun shoots Kyan straight in the chest. I crumble, a coldness seeping through my skin. It takes me a moment to realize there's a knife in my back.
I see their two bodies beside me, but then suddenly, the roof is all I can see as I fall back.
As I stop breathing, all I can think is that there's still not a single thing I regret.
