"No way! We have discussed this last year that we're going to choose either Nara or Hoseok, and we've agreed that they'll be in the top of the list."
Hyojung shrank into her seat, trying to make herself as small as possible. Namjoon nodded solemnly. "I understand your point, we've planned for this for so long, right?"
She glared at the guy – if they have been discussing it for a longer time, why would he propose such a thing? Was it her punishment? Was his act of humiliation in the café, not enough? Must he continue tormenting her this way?
She bit her bottom lip in agitation. She was beginning to question her decision enrolling in that university. Maybe she should – NO. It was a good decision to enroll there, she should not regret her choice.
It was not her fault that such guy exists. It was not in her power to cancel any births that might lead to an annoying existence.
"But I wouldn't have proposed it if it isn't for the council own good. Imagine the great thing we would achieve with Miss Choi on board." He motioned to Hyojung and she nearly shat herself when the attention returned to her.
"She can do better outreach to the new students. They have always been so afraid to approach us with their problems and questions. I believe it has something to do with some members' misconduct." He chuckled darkly when silence befell the room. He, who was standing all the time since he finished doing the round in the room, leaned forward, grasping the table. His expression turned to a sneer as he stared into each members' eyes.
"And here I thought seniors would be more reliable and attentive, which is why we're holding the position in the first place." Another humourless chuckle. "You guys thought it would be so fucking funny to use your name and position for something that you shouldn't do, and you think I wouldn't know? News flash, I know every deed – every shitty thing you did, and I won't just sit around letting this happen. So before I break your student ID into half myself, hand your Council pass cards to Miyu after the meeting and look forward to the formal letter from the university."
His hands left the table and fixed his collar before crossing his arms across his chest. His face void of any expression and tilting his head to the side, he gave a slight smile. Motioning Kim Miyu to continue.
Kim Miyu had a smile on her face, as she asked in a cheerful but formal voice. "Now we are going to vote on Mr. Kim Namjoon proposition for Miss Choi Hyojung to officially become the Student's Council new secretary to stand in for our soon to be former secretary, Miss Kwon Mina." She said as if the president has not even spoken of a very abysmal warning to the whole room.
Kim Miyu placed her pen down and raised her hand. "I vote for Miss Choi."
Hyojung's eyes widened. She knew it would happen, but still, she was really surprised by it.
"You guys are thinking too hard." A giggle. Hyojung turned her eyes to the girl sitting next to Miyu who was twirling her pen. "If the president chose her himself, he must've seen the potential in her."
Then she raised her hand. "I, Kwon Mina vote Choi Hyojung to be my replacement."
"I do not want to be in your place right now." Jinhee gasped, sipping on her iced latte, "hm, this is really good."
Hyojung sighed, watching her newfound friend enjoying the drink that Eunbyul made. "Thanks, I guess." And she sighed again, laying her head onto the wooden table. Her head was starting to pound again and she felt the frustration pushing her to the brink of her sanity.
She wanted to cry so bad – that's how stressed she was.
Silence draped over the two friends as Eunbyul and one other part-time staff moved around serving the people who came to their café after work to get a quick drink. No doubt there might be people who are just starting their shift too. Hyojung once thought it sucked to be them because they had to work during the night when it is sleeping time for most people.
But right then she pitied herself more.
"Hyojung-ah, are you okay?" She felt Jinhee's warm hand engulfed hers and she had to fight to keep her tears at bay.
"I don't know, Jinhee, I am really stressed. Not even Eunbyul eonnie knows the entire story and I already want to give up." Hyojung said, her voice small matching her stature.
"I'm sure you're going to be okay, Hyojung. I'll always be here to help you if it gets too hard. That's what friends do. Besides, Namjoon would be crazy if he keeps you even though you're clearly struggling. It's a violation of your right if he detains you."
"As if he'd care about my right," Hyojung mumbled, to which Jinhee just responded with a sad smile.
"Did the rest of the members really voted for you?" The other girl asked, her hair that she wore in braids earlier that day, was now left untied – the soft curls cascading down past her shoulders. And now that Hyojung had seen her with her hair down, she was struck at how beautiful Jinhee was, and not only that, the girl was also extremely kind. Her mind still could not understand how she gets lucky with friends this time – seeing that she was clearly upset about what happened to herself that day.
She has such rotten luck, so getting to know nice people whom she can probably call her own friends is such a luxury.
Hyojung nodded gloomily. After getting Namjoon's recommendation, Kim Miyu and even Kwon Mina's votes, the rest of the members seemed to be following the trend one by one – until all of them had their hand in the air.
"Anyways, what happened to Yunha?" Hyojung questioned, not wanting to put any more thoughts into it. Even though the entire situation was stressing her out, she did not want to be the center of the topic.
She knew that Yunha left to somewhere after school because she saw that part of the chat in their group, but she did not know what happens for sure since she did not read the rest of the chats. What did they talk about anyway?
Jinhee shrugged, playing with the ice cubes in her glass with her straw. "She said she'd tell me tomorrow, I tried persuading her into telling me in the chat – I was really curious you know, but she wouldn't tell me anything."
Hyojung nodded. Perhaps Yunha is still in the process of opening up to them – she hoped Yunha would trust her enough to call her a friend. One day.
***
Stepping down from the bus, Hyojung's eyes were fixed on the huge gate of the university as her heart was filled with a sense of uncertainty. Yesterday felt like a dream – where she was having a second thought about her choice; that was now standing in front of her.
She felt the grasp on her bag tightened as she took a deep breath. It's nothing, you can do it, Hyojung.
She promised Jinhee that she would meet her and Yunha in their first class today so she would not let the thoughts scare her away. How the heck did she live with this overthinking problem for the last 19 year?
Her mood was improving as she walked to her class; her eyes glided from a student to another. A smile started on her lips as she let her legs stop in the middle of the huge busy hallway.
The excitement returned, that's it. That was the feeling that she wanted to feel when she started yesterday – it was what she had expected.
She had always liked learning; it was the bullying that bothered her. So when she got accepted into the university she thought she would be free from all the worries and focus on her studies and him. Only she did not know fate has something in store for her.
She gritted her teeth. At least he would leave her alone for that day, right?
"Finally showing up, Miss Choi?"
She sucked a breath when everything slowing down to a stop – literally. Students that were bustling to their first classes now stood around her, staring and whispering. She felt the anxiety bubbling up and she felt her heartbeat quicken. Just as she thought her day was going to be good.
"That's not how a Secretary should act." The voice continued, and Hyojung turned slowly to look at the face that had given her nightmare the night before.
Another suit, Hyojung noted seeing Namjoon's preference for the outer clothing. His white turtleneck shirt was the only thing that was bright in colour that wore that day – in exception of his hair. Only that day his hair was styled differently. His blonde bangs touched his forehead as it was split in the side, round glasses adorned his face as a dimple popped out with his smirk. He was smirking when all she wanted was him to disappear – or her to magically vanish to somewhere else, where Kim Namjoon did not exist.
