Trial
The room is full again, the judge is in her chair, and we are all seated. Mr. Matthew's told us to be prepared for Christian to be called up at some point and that Kenneth would most likely be the last one questioned.
As soon as Judge Martha asked Mr. Lawson who he would like to take the stand, with out skipping a beat he said, "Christian Grey."
"Mr. Grey, how do you know my clients?"
"The same way my wife does, although after Mr. Hyde's termination it was brought to my attention that he and I shared a foster home." As Christian continues to be questioned I feel a pull on my arm and look down at Kenneth who motions me closer. He stretches up to whisper in my ear.
"Does that mean Daddy was a adopted." I nod and it looks like a puzzle piece clicks in his mind. "Just like me?" I smile and smooth his hair over, whispering back.
"Yes, just like you." I turn my attention back to my husband and almost fall out of my seat when I hear the next words come from Mr. Lawson's mouth.
"Mr. Grey, is it true that you lived a rather...active, hardcore, sexual life style?" The jury gasps.
Oh shit. This can not be happening. Not in front of everyone. Not here.
Christian's face turns into one I have only seen a handful of times and once again Mr. Matthew's is out of his seat.
"Your Honor, he is badgering the defendant. What does this have anything to do with the case at hand?"
"Mr. Lawson." Judge Martha speaks out, but the man's eyes stay locked on Christian's. "This is the second time you have stepped out of line in questioning." It's obvious that she doesn't know what Mr. Lawson is alluding to, but that still does not explain why Christian's sex life would come up.
"If you absolutely insist on me answering that question I'll answer, on the record, in a private chambers." Christian sneers at the man.
"There will be no need for that Mr. Grey." Judge Martha speaks up.
"No further questions." What was he trying to prove? The fucker. Mr. Matthew's stands up and starts his questions.
"Christian, tell me about your work."
"I started building Grey Enterprises Holdings when I was young, thanks to a good friend, at the time, who gave me a loan to start it up-" Christian continues to explain his work, how it got started, as well as his college experiance and majors. Judge Martha wears an impressed look.
Yup, that's my husband.
"Now, how is your marriage with Mrs. Grey?"
"Almost twenty years strong." Christian looks at me and smiles. "We've had our difficulties, not so much with each other or at each other, just in general, but other than that, our marriage has been pretty amazing."
Mr. Matthew's rest back against the table.
"How about the kids? Tell us about them."
"Well, our first son, Teddy, was conceived soon after we wed. His sister Phoebe was born two years after Teddy. Our youngest was born about two years ago, completely caught us by surprise, then we adopted Kenneth." I hear something like a snicker come from the other side of the room. When I look over, Jack is "scratching" his nose to hide a smile.
"We've made sure all our kids have had the best education, usually starting out being home schooled, but they've all been very successful." Christian answers and Mr. Matthew's nod his head.
"Thank you Mr. Grey." He looks over at the judge. "No more questions."
"You may step down, Mr. Grey." Judge Martha excuses him from the stand. My husband takes his seat beside Kenneth once again before Mr. Lawson calls his next witness, his own client.
"Mr. Hyde, what are you doing now a days?" Mr. Lawson leans against the jury box.
"I've been picking up a few jobs here and there to tie up a few loose ends." I glance down at the lawyers clenched fist before he shoves it in his pocket. Did he say something wrong? "B-but, um..." Hyde's eyes become shifty, glancing all over the floor as if his lines were written there. "Genevieve and I have been prospering well after everything that has been thrown our way."
He is lying through his teeth. I close my eyes and pray for this to be over soon. I can't even continue to listen to this bullshit spilling from his mouth. I feel Christian warm hand grasp my shoulder and give it a comforting squeeze. I look up at Hyde to find his eyes already trained on me. I feel so dirty simply from his gaze. I look down at my hands folded around my sons and wait for the sorry excuse for a human to step off the stand.
"Mr. Hyde, you may step down." I look up at the Judges words. A sense of relief washes over me when I see she had the same grossed out, confused, I'm-not-buying-this-bull-shit look on her face as is on mine.
I watch Mr. Lawson stand from his seat as Hyde and Mr. Matthews return to theirs.
"Mommy," I look over to Kenneth. "are we almost finished?" I look down at my watch.
"I'm not sure sweetie." He nods and chews on the inside of his cheek, his bottom lip pouting. "Hey, when we do leave, you can choose anywhere you want to eat, okay?"
"If I leave with you." He mumbles under his breath and leans into my side. I look over at Christian and shake my head. His brows draw together when he sees the tears threatening to spill.
"I can't handle this." I mouth. He stretches across the small body between us and kisses my hair.
"I love you." He says. All I can do is nod, not trusting my voice and wait for the next person.
"Mr. Lawson, your next witness."
"Theodore Grey." Teddy.
I look back as Teddy rises and scoots past people's legs before he finally makes it to the isle and up to the hot seat.
"Do you prefer Theodore or Teddy, Mr. Grey?"
"Teddy." He relaxes back in his seat crossing his legs and arms. He's inherited his father's stone cold facial expressions.
"Teddy, did you know my clients before today?"
"I was unaware of Mr. Hyde or his connection to my family before today but I had a few encounters with Ms. Everett."
"How so?" Mr. Lawson ask, folding his hands behind his back. Teddy sighs.
"I took a summer job doing yard work or any small construction jobs that was asked of me. I took the job of relandscaping an elderly man's back yard as well as fixing up a shed he had. One day, Ms. Everett showed up, explaining that she was the man's daughter."
"You had never seen Ms. Everett before then?"
"No sir."
"How did it progress from there?" I sit up a little taller in my seat, my ears staying in tune for anything Teddy might not have told us way back when.
"She told me her name and offered me a refreshment since it was close to noon in the middle of summer, and I accepted, thinking it was nothing more than a friendly gesture." His eyes glance over at Genevieve and so does mine. She has a devilish smirk on her face, stareing him down like the pray she once assumed him to be. "When I reached for the drink she with held it from me until I told her what my name was and how old I was. She continued saying she didn't believe I was as old as I said and said she liked me. She put her hands on my face and got uncomfortably close. When I moved her hand away and told her it would be best for her to leave or at least go inside so I can work, she slapped me. She said she didn't like to be told no, she had a different job for me, and I would be seeing her the next day."
"Mhm." Mr. Lawson scratches his chin and walks back to the table."My client explained to me that you were the one to came onto her in her own father's house. She said, and I quote," He reaches behind hiself for a piece of paper. ""Ted promptly removed his shirt once he saw the back door was closed and locked.""
"I was wipeing my face off with the end of my shirt when she walked outside. We never stepped foot inside the house, infact I never walked through the house, I always came in the back gate. We were only on the back porch." Mr. Lawson hums again.
"Teddy, what do you think about Kenneth?"
"My brother is amazing. I've never met a young mind with the knowledge and passions that he has. I don't think I was as intellegant as he is at this age. Infact I believe he could beat me at Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader." I hear a few snickers from the jury and people behind us.
"Did he ever express concernes with you about anything?" Teddy takes a deep breath and looks over at us. He doesn't lock eyes with Christian or me, only Kenneth.
"One of the first things I learned about Kenneth was that he liked airplanes. When I was younger I got a romote controlled P51 mustang that was hardly ever used. So one day I dug it out of storeage and Kenneth and I went to fly it outside for some brother bonding. That night we ended up building a fort in my room for the night because I told him he could stay with me." I look down at Kenneth who is completely invested in his brother's story.
"He told me he loved it here, with us. He finally had a family. Any time he would talk about our parents he would never call our mom "Mom". It was always Ana or Mrs. Grey, but he wouldn't even adress her with a proper name to her face. When I asked him about it, he said he never had a mom, that every maternal figure in his life wasn't so maternal and was never good to him. He didn't want to start calling her Mom just for her to turn out like the others." He looks back over at Genevieve and the jury before locking eyes with Mr. Lawson again. "He said he couldn't dream of being any happier anywhere else."
