Chapter Five | Devil's Night
The one complaint Vinny could have for this job, his employers didn't seem too interested in giving him days off. In years past, he would've spent Halloween with his mom, handing out candy to kids in her neighborhood and watching scary movies with her. She sent him pictures of his little cousins in their cute costumes, telling him how much she missed him. As much as he wished he could be there instead of in a prison, he put forth his best efforts to be an optimistic person.
"You know what today is?" He asked Friday as approached her cell with her dinner in hand.
Her smile was half innocent, half eerie. "I might forget my own birthday, but no way I'm forgetting Halloween. I don't need a calendar for that. You can just feel it in the air."
"Huh, yeah? Guess you're right." Vinny knelt down, setting the tray on the ground and pushing it through the force field. "I gave Ryder one of my mom's cookie recipes last week, in case he wanted to make something for the occasion."
"Ooo," She picked up a fresh baked cookie from her plate, observing it. "Are there candy corns in here?"
"Yeah, she made 'em every year since as long as I can remember. I hate candy corn on it's own, but it's really good in cookies." He responded.
"You tell me I'm way too nice for a hardened criminal, but you're way too nice for a prison guard. Thank youuu."
Friday was convinced he was oblivious to what was happening behind him. On the contrary, he'd learned after two months of working here, panicking does him no good. There was a sprite, no bigger than an apple, stealthily pulling his key card out of his back pocket. Vinny swiftly turned around, yanking it out of it's hands.
Before he had time to wonder where the Hell it came from, it raised it's tiny pixie arms and shot energy bolts into his eye. Vinny instinctively grabbed his face with his hand, dropping his key card in the process. Thankfully, there wasn't much power behind the sprite's sting. The pain subsided quickly, but it wasn't fast enough. The creature flew off with his key card and slid it through the lock on the outside of Ryan's cell.
"Fuck me." He scoffed under his breath as he watched the warlock calmly step out.
Vinny realized the only way he was getting Ryan back in his cell was by force. He rushed the inmate, taking a swing at him. Ryan threw his arm up to block the hit, of which he was anticipating to be weak. Imagine his surprise when he was knocked to the ground by an immense amount of pressure. When Vinny attempted to grab him off the ground, he rolled out of the way and delivered a kick to the guard's stomach.
Ryan got to his feet while his opposition stumbled back. He swung his fist at Vinny, only for his arm to phase straight through his body. Vinny took his bewilderment as an opportunity to get a hit in. He decked Ryan in the face, causing his nose to begin gushing blood. Instead of getting upset, he simply smiled.
The warlock used his own blood to write out a spell against the air. A flash of light spawned a long metal staff. Ryan grasped it, and threw it back over his head. Vinny was confused, until he saw the staff land in Ricky's hand. While he was busy sparing with Ryan, the sprite unlocked the mercenary's cell.
Vinny knew damn well that wasn't a fight he was going to win. As Ricky began to come for him, he threw himself against the railing and phased through it, causing himself to fall down to the first floor. Once he landed on his feet, Vinny ran over to the main control panel and slammed his hand against the emergency button. Not only would it alert the rest of the guards of a breakout, it activated automated defenses that were programmed to target the inmates genetic signatures.
Hefty guns descended from panels in the ceiling. Ricky twirled his staff fast enough to divert every bullet they unloaded until his partner was able to do something about them. With a simply whistle, Ryan directed his sprite to destroy the machines by flying through them. The room may have been covered in bullet holes, but they remained untouched. At the very least, the thirty seconds it took them to achieve such a thing allowed the first wave of guards to arrive.
They rushed in, padded in armor. Ricky leaped off the railing and landed amongst what had to been fifteen men. They came down on him the best they could, but their efforts were for nothing. He knocked them out in sixty seconds, flat. Not a single one even touched him. As much as Vinny would have loved to go down fighting, he did have a life he cared about. He stayed down himself and allowed the two to do whatever it was they planned to do.
Ricky made a beckoning motion towards his partner. Ryan threw the key card down to him, though he wasn't aware why he needed it beyond this point. As the warlock made his way down to the first floor, Ricky used the card to unlock Chris' cell. He grabbed Chris by the back of his shirt, seething, "You're coming with us. You're the reason we're in this shithole in the first place."
He threw Chris onto the ground in the middle of the cell block. Ryan joined Ricky by his side, beginning to cast a spell that would open a portal. Croc suddenly jumped to his feet, slamming his fists against his force field. "No! Don't you fuckin' dare!"
Ricky glanced back at him as if the beast was nothing but an annoyance to him. He pulled his staff in two, revealing a sharp end on one half. As the portal began to activate, he threw the spear into the control panel outside Beau's cell. "Consider us even." Ricky sneered.
In a burst of red light, they disappeared, leaving nothing but bodies behind. The system maintaining Beau's cell short circuited, dropping the field and unlocking his shackles. He raised to his feet and ripped off the devices restraining his powers.
Vinny watched as the telepath emerged from his cell, whining out of frustration, "Oh, c'mon!"
"Sorry, Vinny." Beau somberly replied. He then seized the guard's mind, causing him to collapse on the ground.
"Was dis how you thought shit'd go?" Croc scoffed at him.
Beau approached the main control panel, responding to Croc as he unlocked the remaining cells, "There was about a 50/50 chance Ricky and Ryan would betray us. I didn't think they'd take Chris, though, but we'll find him. The important thing is getting out of here before any heroes arrive."
Croc cracked his knuckles and jumped down from his platform. He glanced up to the second floor balcony to see Friday now sat on the rail, eating the cookie Vinny had given her. She swung her legs back and forth as she asked him, "So, are you single?"
"Hm, you wish, Cher. Come on wit' us and I'll introduce you to my brothers." He suggested. That was enough for her. Friday jumped down to the base level. While they went about their nefarious business, she raided the dinner cart for more cookies.
Asher, naturally, had turned invisible out of stress from all the chaos. Beau entered his mind and flipped the evil switch. Suddenly, it was as if he was a different person. He dropped his cloak, dawning a sinister smile. There wasn't an ounce of fear or timidness left in his eyes. He raised his hands, summoning a black smoke that wrapped his body. It took away his prison clothes and dressed his sinful skin in tight leather.
Beau glanced to the concrete wall at the back of the room, then addressed the Cajun. "You think you can do it?"
"You think I woulda let my ass get caught for nothin'?" He replied. Croc pulled a bead off of the end of one of his dreads and threw it into the wall. It exploded, eating through the stone like acid.
"How'd you get that through security?" Friday asked.
He shrugged. "Lil' too big to fit in the scanner. The cop doin' the pat down went kinda fast."
She snickered, "Gee, I wonder why."
The corrosive substance had reached it's limit before the wall was completely dissolved. Those who sent Croc here had anticipated as much, and chose him to be their Trojan horse for that very reason. He slammed his fist into the weakened wall, causing it to crumble. On the other side, a thin body hung from restraints in the ceiling. Friday raised an eyebrow curiously. This was the guy they they literally sealed in a wall?
Before Croc could pull him down, a bolt of energy hit his back. He turned around to see a hero stood in the doorway. Mother; She was one of the few that would actually concern them. Her long blonde hair hanging over her vacant eyes and the witchy markings on her body made her look more like a villain, but they knew better. Croc growled as he raised back to his feet. Beau got in his head, telling him to focus on the objective.
Asher transformed into his smoke form and wrapped around her. She began to choke on his diseased air, but quickly dispelled him with one blast. Injured, he retracted and kept his distance while he healed. Beau leaned down to Vinny's unconscious body and placed his fingertips upon his forehead.
"Raise your hand again, Maria, and I'll destroy his mind." Beau threatened, "Do you want to have to explain to his mom that her only son was brain dead because of you?"
Mother gritted her teeth, "You are such a pain in my ass."
Her head jolted up when she heard the breaking of metal. Croc had succeeded in freeing the mysterious man. In that moment, the hero really didn't care about one person's life over seven billion. Latin words began to spill from her mouth as she cast an ancient spell. Her hands flew over her throat when she suddenly lost her voice. Her ears went deaf and her eyes blind. Trapped in her own mind with her senses severed, she fell to her knees.
Beau looked back to see the prisoner had woken from the comatose state the prison had placed him in. He wasn't at his best, having to hold onto Croc for support, but he clearly had enough energy to disable one of the most powerful heroes in the world. Mother wouldn't stay down long, and it was only a matter of time before more supers arrived.
Now that he had been freed, Friday saw him in a much different light. She could feel the amount of power he possessed, and frankly, it scared her. She was beginning to second guess her decision to leave with them. There was something so raw and evil about this being. He pushed himself away from Croc to stand on his own. The villain's eyes filled with white light as he cast a teleportation enchantment. Unfortunately for Vinny, because Beau's hand was still on him, he got caught up in the spell.
