58- Meg

Meg

As we were navigating in the middle of upstate nowhere the sun finally set. "Rory I can't see a thing."

"Meg, should I pull over while we get our bearings?"

I started shivering. "We're lost Rory. I'm not sure pulling over will help in the least. Unless you wanna kiss me?"

"I always wanna kiss you Meg."

"As much as it pains me to say this... I think we should wait until we're sitting in front of a roaring fireplace. I'm freezing."

Rory turned the heat up full blast then noticed he was dangerously low on gas. "Uh oh..."

"What uh oh?" I tried not to panic but when I saw the gas gauge on E it became impossible. "Rory, what're we gonna do?"

"Your dad probably has extra gas at his place."

"If we ever find my dad. We'll freeze to death out here."

Rory pulled the car over. At first I thought he wanted to kiss me before we died a cold miserable death. Instead he grabbed my hands and prayed.

"Dear heavenly Father. We are in a bit of a pickle here... Our car is dangerously low on gas... but you know all of this. We need help! We need to find Meg's dad before he--"

Dread washed over me. "--dies! We have to find my dad before he dies!"

Rory squeezed my hands. "What is it Meg?"

I could see my father in my mind's eye more clearly than I could see Rory sitting next to me. "My dad... he's coughing, he can't catch his breath... the cabin feels like an icebox."

Rory and I shouted together, "Help us Lord!"

A small firefly hovered in front of the jeep's windshield.

Rory looked astonished. "It's the middle of the winter. How is that little firefly alive?"

"Follow that insect Rory!"

Slowly the glowing insect flew forward and Rory kept up. If the firefly went too far ahead it would turn back and wait for us to catch up. We followed it left and right until finally I recognized the long gravel driveway leading to our family's summer cabin. Then the bright yellow blinking light faded then disappeared altogether.

"We're here Rory!"

Rory must still be stunned for he didn't reply. He silently drove down the bumpy driveway. It wasn't until we reached the cabin that he spoke.

"Meg, did you see that? Or did I imagine it?"

"We saw it, Rory. Our prayers were answered. Let's go help my dad!"

Beth

I knew it was time for me to come clean. "Listen um... I can draw stuff and it appears."

Amy guffawed. "So that's why you're dressed so fashionably today. I thought I recognized that outfit from my Free People catalogue."

Jo came to my rescue. "Amy, that is not the point! Her gift could come in really handy!"

Amy clicked her tongue. "Yeah if you want free stuff! Style has to be learned Bethie."

I hung my head. "I was just practicing. I didn't think I could actually draw stuff into being."

"I have a plan." Jo spoke as she paced. She always paces while thinking. "What if I get us all into the hospital then Amy can prefer Allie not die..."

Sarah spoke up. "They'll never let you in. Security is everywhere.  The hospital has tighter security than Fort Knox!"

Jo continued pacing. "I got it! That's where Beth comes in. Beth, can you draw us some official looking uniforms with badges and stuff?"

"Sure I think so... Especially if I can see some photos."

"I'll pull some photos up on my computer." Bob ran into the living room.

Amy blurted. "If I'm the one doing the healing I'd like a doctor's uniform please. A long white lab coat would look smart.  I've always wanted to be a pretend doctor."

Jo dashed Amy's dreams. "You look too young to be a doctor, Amy."

She objected. "Not with my hair pulled up and a facemask." She turned to Beth. "Could you give me a pair of black rimmed glasses?"

I got a little worried. "I guess..." What if I couldn't pull this off. I desperately seek my sister's approval.

Amy became annoyed. "What do you mean I guess? Either you can or you can't."

"I can but I don't want us to go to jail." I stopped sketching. My drawings resembled uniforms but I worried they wouldn't look official.

"I'll just prefer the police officers away." Amy waved her hand as if she were shooing away a fly.

Jo confidently added, "And if that ever happened I'd teleport us outta there."

The realist in me spoke up. "So now we're criminals on the run?"

Amy got in my face. "Oh Bethie... you always look on the dreary side of things. What if we could have saved mom? Would we have done it?"

My heart ached and I must have looked dejected. "Of course..."

Amy looked pleased with herself. "Good. Then it's settled. Make sure our badges look official. This is gonna be so cool!"

Jo brought Amy out of the dramatic clouds. "Look little sister... We're not playing parts in a play--we're trying to save a young woman's life."

"I know..." Amy whined. "Can I help it if I want to get into character first?"

I had to admit Amy was right. If we were gonna pull this off each of us would need to play their part.
