KornDen part 1/4

One shot plot: Two weeks have passed since Tonkla and Korn broke up. The latter seems to have started to move on, although forgetting Tonkla completely is difficult. When one evening he is wounded in the neck by a masked man, the next day he ends up going to the hospital to have the dressing that his brother Great had given him checked. It is on that occasion that he meets Doctor Den, a somewhat bizarre and at times disturbing doctor, who will however make him see love from a different perspective than the one he had experienced before.

It's eight in the morning, and Korn is in his parents' kitchen having breakfast. He was dressed in a red shirt and black pants, elegant style was just his style. It's been two weeks since he and Tonkla broke up. He started to get over it little by little and in those 14 days he realized, reflecting on himself and the whole situation, that even if he had feelings for Tonkla, he couldn't give him everything he needed. He started to realize that their relationship wasn't the same anymore, just like Tonkla had told him. He had accepted it and was getting over it well.

Anyway, the night before, while he was drinking with his brother at a bar, he was attacked in the neck by someone wearing a black mask. He asked Great to chase him but he couldn't catch him and find out who it was. After he came back, Great put a bandage around his neck and they continued drinking and joking as if his life out there wasn't falling apart. Since his father had entrusted him with that illegal activity, his life had totally changed and his routine was becoming more and more monotonous. He had started neglecting everyone, including Tonkla, and this had led to the end of their relationship. He had realized that he couldn't be too angry with him, if he hadn't neglected him this wouldn't have happened. Not to mention the fact that he was forced to have a relationship with Fasai, a rich and powerful woman that his father had introduced him to. In those two weeks, he had also rarely seen Great and this made him very sad. He wanted to be more present for his little brother but he failed at that too. On the other hand, he is relieved to know that his family did not leave the mess to Great, he would not have wanted to see his brother end up like him. Everything he did was to not disappoint his father, but by doing so he was slowly losing all the people he usually surrounded himself with.

After finishing breakfast he decides to go to the hospital to have the wound he received the day before checked, he wants to make sure there is no infection of any kind. As he is about to leave Great calls him: "Korn, where are you going at this hour?"

"I want to go to the hospital to have my wound checked." Korn replies.

"I'll accompany you, if anything happens to you at least you won't be alone." Great adds.

Korn accepts with a smile and together with his brother, who had also offered to drive, they head towards the hospital.

"You've been stressed lately, is there something wrong?" Great asks.

"Work is a bit demanding, but nothing that can't be solved. In fact, I'm sorry I haven't been there for you lately." Korn apologizes.

"I'm fine, rather, you should rest more." Great continues.

"I can handle it." Korn smiles at him.

"Is there anything else? I feel like you haven't told me everything." Great asks doubtfully.

"If I tell you, will you promise not to judge me?" Korn plans to tell Great about Tonkla. Even though they broke up, he wants his brother to at least know. He doesn't like the idea of hiding something from him.

"Even though I'm with Fasai, I actually had another relationship before. Fasai was never the person I loved." he confesses.

"I know." Great simply replies with a smile.

"What do you mean you know?" Korn looks at him confused.

"I mean, it was obvious that I didn't love Fasai, and then more than a few times I happened to hear you talking on the phone to someone in a very loving way." his brother smiles at him again.

"You eavesdropped on my phone conversations?" Korn asks.

"I'm sorry, I didn't do it on purpose." Great apologizes.

"It doesn't matter, but why didn't you ever come and talk to me about it?" Korn asks again.

"I didn't mean to force you to tell me anything or make you feel uncomfortable, I was waiting for you to tell me and I'm glad you did." Great continues driving to the hospital.

Korn feels relieved to hear Great's words: "what if I told you it's a boy?" he ventures.

"A boy? Is he older or younger than you?" Great asks casually.

"He's older than you but younger than me. Doesn't it make you feel weird that he's a boy?" Korn then asks.

"Why would it? Whether it's a man or a woman, it's still a person, what does gender matter? Besides, I think I like someone too." Great gives a half smile, more than happy it seems like a sad smile.

"Why do you seem sad to say that?" his brother asks.

"It's a bit of a complicated situation." Great confesses.

"Why is it complicated?" Korn continues with the questions.

"I'll tell you another time." Great simply answers him.

"Anytime." Korn replies and squeezes his shoulder, while his brother stands near the hospital entrance.

"The boy you told me about earlier is the person you broke up with?" Great asks.

Korn nods: "we broke up two weeks ago, I think it was right like this, I understood it by being alone these two weeks, without having contact with him anymore. And then, if we really want to tell the whole truth, not everyone would be willing to be with me knowing that I have to have a relationship with a woman."

"You should leave her and not care, our father I'm sure will understand. After all you are his favorite son." Great chuckles.

Korn also smiles at that answer but he does it thinking: there are so many things you don't know Great, and it's better that you continue not knowing them.

They arrive at the hospital and as soon as they enter they notice that there are a few people, that place was never empty. In an attempt to look for a doctor they meet a nurse who asks them why they were there.

"I need to show them this wound on my neck." Korn replies.

"I'll have someone check it out right away, I'll go see if there's a doctor available. It's a bit of a busy day today." the woman gives him a shy smile.

"Does it hurt?" Great asks.

"A little but it's bearable. Don't worry." Korn replies.

The nurse comes back and brings a doctor with her. Korn looks him up and down. He had black hair and was wearing glasses that made his face look strange, almost peculiar.

"Dr. Den." Great greets him, a bit surprised that they had called him.

"How are you Great?" he asks with a smile.

Korn could have guessed that the two knew each other, maybe he was the person his brother was interested in? He didn't think about it too much because he focused on the doctor's smile, which also seemed peculiar.

"I'm fine, I'd rather ask you to take care of my brother." Great replies.

"I already told you that you can just call me Den, there's no need for these formalities." the doctor replies, then focusing his gaze on Korn.

"I'm Korn." he comes forward, holding out his hand and barely giving him a smile.

"Den." the doctor replies, shaking his hand and looking at him a little strangely.

The latter gestures with his hand to follow him, at which point Korn follows him and is led into a kind of room that looked more like an infirmary.

"You can sit there." Den points to a bed.

Korn does as he says and waits for the doctor to return with all the necessary equipment.

He brings a small case with all the necessary supplies, which he places on the table nearby.

"How did you get this wound?" he asks while taking gloves and a disinfectant.

"I was attacked." he simply answers.

"You must have done something bad then." the doctor lets out a laugh and looks him in the eyes.

Korn is a little uneasy by his smile and his sarcastic answers but decides to reciprocate, so he smiles at him too.

At that point the doctor approaches him and ends up in between his legs that were slightly apart and dangling from the bed, and this makes him blush for a moment.

The doctor gets closer and closer and asks him to tilt his head so he can remove the bandage that Great had put on him the first night.

"You were lucky, if it had been a deep cut you would have risked dying or you would have ended up in serious conditions." Den tells him.

"Should I take this as a consolation?" Korn jokes.

"Whatever you want." the doctor smiles at him again.

From the little he had seen of that man he understood that he was a smiling type.

At that point, after removing the bandage he sprays him with disinfectant and massages the wound lightly with his hand to see if it hurts.

Korn squints and the doctor lets go of his hand to take a nice covering plaster.

"How come you know my brother?" Korn asks him curiously, addressing him formally.

"You can just call me Den, don't talk to me formally, it makes me feel terribly old." Korn tells him putting a hand on his heart and with a melodramatic tone.

"How come you know my brother, Den?" Korn corrects himself.

Den smiles at him and answers: "Great didn't tell you about him?"

"It depends on what, I haven't seen him in a while and we haven't spoken much lately." Korn answers.

"Did he tell you about the fact that he can see 4 minutes into the future?" Den had finished applying the band-aid and was looking him in the eye at that moment, without having moved away.

"Yeah, he told me about it." the boy replies.

Den gives another of his smiles, which Korn was starting to find really creepy, and steps away slightly to put the first aid kit back in place.

"Well, I'm the doctor who's taking care of it. I had him come here last week to have a chat and get to know him better from a medical point of view." Den continues.

"And you've come to a conclusion?" Korn asks him.

"Another patient of mine has the same symptoms, Great agreed to meet with me on my advice, this way he can really compare himself with someone like him. I'm also doing research on this phenomenon and I would like to come to a conclusion. It's something surprisingly interesting." Den replies with his eyes almost lighting up.

"So far what have you discovered?" Korn was curious, even if everything that was happening to his brother was absurd to him.

"This phenomenon mainly occurs when the person in question has a cardiac arrest." Den had put his briefcase down and returned to Korn who was still sitting on the bed intent on listening to his story.

"Are you saying that when Great sees 4 minutes into the future he is in cardiac arrest?" Korn would really like to understand something.

"I'm not sure yet, but it's a possibility. This thing is quite absurd from a scientific point of view, I was the first to be skeptical, but when I understood more than a few cases before Great I understood that it was not as I thought. It's something much bigger, that I will try to find out with all my strength." Den replies.

"When Great told me about it for the first time I admit I didn't believe him, but over time he started talking to me about it more frequently and after your words I can only believe it." Korn in the meantime gets up.

"I'll prescribe you a pill to take once a day to remove any trace of infection, in case there is. I don't think there is because it was disinfected yesterday and again today, but it's better to prevent it." Den goes behind the desk in the room.

After a few moments he has the paper ready for Korn who is getting ready to leave the room.

"Please don't overexert yourself these days and take care of the wound properly." Den recommends him.

Korn gives him a smile: "thank you, have a good day." he tells him.

He opens the door to go back to Great but the doctor follows him for some unknown reason.

As soon as they arrive at Great, the latter thanks Dr. Den once again and is ready to leave when he is stopped by him, who asks him to come closer. He ends up saying something in his ear, which makes Korn frown, because he didn't understand what was happening.

When he sees Great chuckle at what he had just said he gets even more confused. His brother says goodbye to the doctor who gives them both a smile and they leave the hospital, heading towards the car.

Korn decides to let Great drive again.

When they are in the car and have fastened their seatbelts ready to leave, Korn turns to him and asks: "is the person you like Dr. Den?" he raises an eyebrow.

Great turns towards him for a moment before turning his gaze back to the road and bursts out laughing: "what?"

"When you talk to each other, you use informal language and it makes it seem like you have a very close relationship." Korn replies.

"It's not Dr. Den that I like, but a colleague of his. In fact, it's thanks to him that I met Dr. Den." Great confesses.

"So what did he whisper to you earlier that was so funny?" his brother asks curiously.

Great chuckles again and Korn frowns more and more, before finally giving him an answer: "he actually told me that he didn't think I had such a charming brother."

Korn's eyes widen suddenly, almost feeling embarrassed at hearing Great's words.

"He really told you that?" he asks to be sure.

"What are you surprised about? Do you have self-esteem issues?" Great jokes.

"It's not that, I just didn't think he told you that." Korn replies, scratching the back of his neck in embarrassment.

"I think he was impressed by you. " Great ventures.

"That doctor is all weird." Korn continues.

"Why do you say that? Is it because he's always smiling and doesn't look serious?" Great asks.

"See, you answered that question yourself. He has a creepy look on his face sometimes. And I've only seen it once." his brother adds.

"I don't think so, but maybe you noticed because you were focused on his gaze?" Great asks slyly.

"Come on, stop it." Korn playfully shoves him while driving.

"You can't say he's not a good-looking guy." the boy continues.

"I never said that, I said he's a little creepy." Korn reiterates.

"Sure, we'll talk about it in a few weeks." Great winks.

"What do you mean?" Korn asks confused.

"I mean, if you keep seeing him every now and then, maybe you'll change your mind." Great suggests.

"Unless he's in the hospital, I doubt we'll ever meet again." Korn replies.

"Never say never in life, I used to say that too but I started seeing him more and more." Great smiles talking about the person he likes.

"I'm not convinced, I still find him creepy." Korn reiterates.

Great then shakes his head as if to say "I can't handle you" and continues on his way home.

Korn, once accompanied by Great at home, decides to take his car and go to his apartment. Once there, he sits on the couch for a moment and lets out a sigh. Soon he was supposed to go to the houses on the water where his family's illegal casino was located. Two days earlier, a woman inside the casino had sent some important information to someone, taking pictures of some documents that were supposed to remain secret. She was about to run away but when she was hit in the leg by a bullet, she thought it would be a good idea to throw her cell phone into the water and in this way, make the information irretrievable. However, Korn had told his men that he would take care of this matter personally. He had told them not to hurt that woman, it was not his style to hurt people. During that morning, he would take care of the matter by going to talk to her personally. She had been held in a special place, they had tried to make her talk but they had not managed to obtain information. Who wanted to sabotage his father's business and why? He wanted to find out at all costs who was behind it and why, otherwise he would not have given himself peace. He did not speak to his father about it at all because he did not want him to be disappointed or angry with him. His father's opinion was too important to him, even if this made him live in a bubble and totally marginalized from reality. Lost in his thoughts, he realizes he is receiving a call, it was one of his men, or rather, his father's.

"I'll be right there." he says simply.

He ends the call and gets up, ready to leave. When he is in front of the garage, waiting for the sliding shutter to open, he hears a suspicious noise. He immediately turns around but sees nothing. He begins to think that someone seriously wanted to see him dead, and that perhaps that someone was the same person who had attacked him causing that wound to his neck. It was inevitable that he had been targeted by now, he could no longer let his guard down, he must have had an eye in the back of his head too. He gets into the car and leaves the garage, starting to process various thoughts about that whole situation even though the only thing he wanted to do was get out of it. He still wonders why his father entrusted him with something so big to manage. Even if he didn't show it, for him it was becoming a truly unbearable situation. While he is concentrating on driving, he realizes, from the mirror in front of him, that someone with a black motorcycle and completely dressed in black was following him. He decides to change his route to see how far he was willing to follow him. He takes the opportunity to make a call with the touch screen of his car, so that one of his men would arrive and take care of him.

"I'm sending you my position, come here immediately and follow him without arousing suspicion. Try to find out who he is, clear? But be careful." he says before ending the call.

He arrives in front of a bar and decides to get out and act like a normal citizen who goes to have breakfast, so as not to arouse suspicion towards the man on the motorbike.

When he sets foot in the refined bar, made entirely of wood and cared for in the smallest details, he decides to go to the counter to get a coffee, he actually needed one.

He sits on the stool and asks the bartender to prepare him one. He sighs, running both hands over his face in a sense of tiredness.

"Korn?" at a certain point he hears someone calling him and almost jumps in surprise.

"Den?" he asks, to be sure it was really him. This time he wasn't wearing a lab coat, he had a black short-sleeved shirt and white pants.

"What a coincidence, you came to get a coffee?" he asks him smiling.

"Yeah, I needed it. But why are you here?" Korn replies curiously.

"I finished my shift today since I was in the hospital all night. So I came to get a piece of cake and a glass of orange juice before I go home and get a good night's sleep." Den replies.

"Good job." Korn replies, having no other answer in mind.

Meanwhile, his coffee arrives.

"Is your wound okay?" Den asks.

"We met not too long ago, how do you think I am?" Korn teases, chuckling.

"You never know." Den shrugs, chuckling back.

As Korn nods at his answer and resumes sipping his coffee, Den blurts out, "Want to swap Line IDs?"

Korn almost chokes on his coffee, Den notices and pats him on the back as if to pull him back.

"Why do you ask?" Korn asks again.

"Well, in case you need help with your wound, or even just a friend to talk to." Den smiles at him.

"His smile is really creepy, how can Great say otherwise?" thinks Korn.

And then, did he really use the word "friend" when he was clearly hitting on him?

"Okay." Korn pulls out his phone and shows him the QR code for Line.

"Well, I think I'm going home now, see you."
Den waves goodbye and goes to pay before disappearing out of the bar entirely.

Korn finishes his coffee, and looks outside to see if the man with the motorbike is still around but he seems to have left.

He gets up and goes to the register, but when he gets there, the girl behind the counter tells him, "the guy who left earlier paid for your coffee too."

Korn frowns for a moment, then thanks the girl with a smile and leaves.

Was he seriously hitting on him?

When he finally arrives at his destination, two men escort him to the boat that would take him to one of the buildings where the woman had been locked up. It wasn't like the ones he usually visited where there were people gambling illegally. The one he was going to at that moment seemed to be some kind of prison, where they locked up or tortured anyone who opposed their business. It gave him the creeps a little, after all he wasn't cut out for that role. When he arrives and sees the woman covered in blood on her leg where she had been shot he is a little shocked.

"Get someone to treat her wound now. You should have done this before. Didn't I make it clear that you weren't supposed to hurt her? That included being considerate of her." Korn rolls his eyes.

He then asks his men to leave the two alone so they can talk calmly.

"I don't need a doctor, you can just let me die." says the girl with her hands and legs tied.

"Please, can I ask why you won't tell us the truth? Are you threatened? Do you need money?" Korn asks in quick succession.

"I lost a dear friend because of you." only the woman answers.

"I have no idea who your friend was, but I'm sorry for your loss." Korn apologizes.

"Are you kidding me?" she asks, not a little surprised.

"I'm not kidding you. I'm truly sorry that you lost someone important to my family. If you think I'm happy, I can assure you that I'm not. I don't like this crap," Korn adds.

"Then why do you do this?" the girl asks.

"You don't know my family and you don't know what my father is capable of, I can't easily say no to him. I don't have enough power to counter his business." he replies.

"Do you know that because of your family, a good friend of mine also lost his family?" the woman raises her voice.

"I'm really sorry, I really had no idea. I found out as soon as my father gave me this assignment, before that I had no idea what was hidden in this place." Korn doesn't know what to say anymore.

"Why don't you destroy all of this? You can do it, if you join us we can destroy this shit. You said you don't like it either, right? Or do you want there to be more victims?" the woman asks.

"I can't do it, I'm sorry. The situation is bigger than you think." Korn after that bitter answer, leaves, and reiterates to the men outside to make sure Nan is taken care of properly.

He would have liked so much to change things, to make that rotten place disappear, but he couldn't and a little bit he didn't want to. The idea of disappointing his father didn't appeal to him, and in his heart he knew he couldn't change anything, he knew his father was too powerful and he couldn't beat him. But he was sure of one thing, he would have prevented the death of other innocent people.

"Mr. Korn, for the man who was following you on the motorbike, we managed to make a video where you can see his face, I'll have him send it to you." one of the men tells him as he is about to leave that place.

When he returns to dry land he turns on his phone to watch the video that had been provided to him, to see who the person was who was following him the previous morning.

When he starts the video he frowns for a moment because he seems to recognize that place.

It was in fact the road on which Tonkla's house stood, the one who was now his ex-boyfriend.

He sees the boy on the motorbike get off right in front of his house, at that point he notices Tonkla come out and hug him. When they are about to enter the house they intertwine their hands.

Korn swallows the lump that had formed in his throat. Something inside him breaks.

Had Tonkla already forgotten him? Had he already moved on? Was it only two weeks?

Those were the thousand questions that were going through Korn's head, to which he didn't even know if he wanted to give an answer. After watching the video, he leaves the gallery and turns off his phone screen. He looks at his reflection in the car mirror and thinks: if he's already moved on, why can't I give myself a second chance to find someone else?
