"Write about an experience at the grocery store"

Another grocery store prompt, wonder why again. And the surprising thing is that though I enjoy grocery shopping, or rather the wandering around the aisles aimlessly, looking at the displays, I cannot recall any thing that is worthy of being written about.

But then grocery stores are interesting, both from the familiar 'Mom and Pop stores to the large impersonal ones. When we were young, we would buy some stuff from the 'kirana' store across the road, and since it was a colony, everyone knew everyone. My brother was fascinated that the store keeper would let him take things without asking for money in return. Now we can laugh at his innocence for then he never knew that the account would be settled my one of our parents. That was indeed a friendly neighbourhood store.

The large supermarkets do not afford such pleasant experiences. But they have an interesting layout, all the tempting unhealthy and unnecessary stuff is always near the entrance and the billing counters – ice creams, biscuits, candies, sweets, while the important necessities are stocked towards the corner ends.

The next time you are there, check it out, there would be small differences but the over all layout would be the same. It is a marketing gimmick.
