The playground didn't leave me for the rest of the day. Or the next. It reminded me too much of the person who'd lied to, cheated, and broken me. Throwing the little scene at the playground made me feel worse, and the fact I'd kissed Chat in hopes of distracting him made me feel even more rotten. But as I pushed the mask up the bridge of my nose, securing it in place, I couldn't help but feel my first memories of that playground being turned over and replaced with these new ones, just as the wooden ground had been, flipped in mine and Chat's haste.
Kissing my fingers and pressing them to a picture of Adrien, I trotted off. No, I was not over Adrien, and no, I was not into Chat. Not in a million years.
I was out of my house before my mother could ask any questions, prancing down the road, careless about the time. It was when I saw Chat, already standing on the bridge, that I realized I'd been a little too slow. He was meandering around the bridge, seemingly out of place as he struggled to find something to keep him busy. A surge of giddiness propelled me towards him, sending me ramming into his back with a hug. "Hello!" I announced, letting go of the bigger person.
"Hi, Ladybug." Chat said with a smile.
"Looks like I'm the late one today. Sorry about that." I laughed.
"That's what I thought." Chat said, sticking out an elbow for me.
We fell into a slightly uncomfortable silence, an awkwardness replacing the usual ease I felt. Arms linked, we began walking leisurely down the bridge in a direction I couldn't place. My boots, much more suitable today than yesterday, crunched against the slush-ridden sidewalks as I marveled at the Christmas decorations on every shop, door, and home. "It's almost Christmas." I noted.
"Yeah." Chat said, shaken out of thought.
"What's your favorite celebration? Like Christmas, Easter." I inquired.
"I don't know... My family hasn't really celebrated anything. Maybe Christmas, though." Chat said, a finger to his chin in thought.
"I like Christmas, too. Everything feels so magical." I said, gesturing to the streets around us, lights adorning lamps and trees.
"It'd be even better if it snowed a little more, though." Chat remarked, throwing a pointed looked at the sky.
Suddenly he was shaking his head, as though it had rained. "What- oh." I said, feeling a light flake brush across my features.
"It's snowing." Chat said softly.
"It's snowing." I repeated, equally as caught in awe.
"It's snowing!" Chat repeated, more excitedly this time.
"Yes!" I replied, laughing as more flakes fell.
Chances were, it wouldn't stick. But it was still beautiful.
We were running through the streets then, headed to the bright blue and red beam of light ahead of us. There was the Eiffel tower, covered in lights and framed by snow. We practically raced to it, nearly slipping several times in the freezing slush. "Ladybug, slow down!" Chat called, laughing as he slid several feet forward.
He slid into me, nearly pushing us to the ground. We clutched at each for support as snow brushed into our hair and blinded us. We were laughing, for moments, almost literally frozen in place and doubled over in laughter. "C'mon!" I said, finally trying to get my bearings.
"A-alright, I'm following." Chat managed to get out.
Before long we found ourselves at the base of one of Paris's finest creations. "What are we doing today?" Chat asked.
I turned, arms flailing as I slid on some ice. Blindly, I latched onto Chat's arm, elbow locking as we clutched each other's upper arms. "Good save. Let's check." I remarked, reaching with my free hand for the buzzing cell phone in my pocket.
"Hmmm.... do we pick "sin" or innocent?" I asked, unsure if today counted as two innocent challenges later.
"I.. Hmmm. I'm not sure." Chat said, holding his chin in thought.
"... Should we just pick one?" I asked hesitantly.
"I guess we should. I mean, I can always help..." Chat said, leaning forwards with a wink.
"Oh, shut up." I said, pushing him back by his nose.
"Make me." Chat challenged.
"Oh, hell nah." I said, shaking my head.
I moved my stance, crossing my arms. But as it would turn out, the simple movement sent me slipping, and my fist instinctively closed over the phone in my hand, the other latching onto Chat's shoulder. "Can we sit do-.... oh dear." I began, distracted by the new message on my screen.
"What? Oh." Chat said, peeking over my shoulder.
My finger had slid onto the sinful option, a new message loading to give us our challenge. "Whatever it is, it changes nothing." I breathed.
"Yeah, yeah." Chat nodded absently, waiting for the next message to arrive.
With a buzz, the new challenge arrived. "Nope. Nope. Nope." I said, locking the phone and throwing it in my pocket before stalking away to one of the Eiffel tower legs.
"Oh dear God." Chat was saying, being dragged along by our arms, that had managed to link.
"French kiss? I cannot do that. Nope." I whisper-yelled.
"Listen, LB. I don't want you to do it if you don't wanna, I'm not forcing you into anything." Chat started, releasing my arm to raise his hands in front of his torso.
"I know, I know. It's not your choice. But we don't have to if you don't want to or whatever." I said, matching my hands to the same position his were in.
"Well, it's the same for me either way. I mean, I don't mind kissing you." Chat said with a shrug.
I let out a groan of frustration. "It's not you, it's... something else, and I don't wanna create the illusion of something between us. This," I gestured in the space between us, "is solely for the challenge. I mean, we'll still be friends, or whatever, but I don't wanna lead you on. And I'm not sure, exactly, how you feel about me, don't answer that, but I was hoping we could keep this kinda... platonic?" I winced as I finished.
How cold could I be? "That's fine. I get it." Chat said.
Was he allowed to be this understanding? "When you do stuff like that you just make me wanna kiss you." I mumbled.
"Nothing's stopping you." Chat smirked.
Of course. Of course he had magical hearing skills. Making an amused face, I pushed Chat lightly out of my way before precariously skipping off. We found ourselves in the park, sitting within a cluster of trees. "We have no choice." I shook my head.
"We have made a commitment." Chat agreed.
Shyly, I scooted closer to Chat, feeling his arm press into my side. We both glanced away, suddenly overwhelmed with awkwardness. "So..." I trailed off, nervously rubbing the back of my neck as I scrutinized a piece of dead grass.
"Um..." Chat responded.
We fell back into silence. For a good minute, or two, it was just and our thoughts. Mine were focused on the fact that I would be be essentially making out with Chat Noir. Of all people. Maybe I could just pretend he was Adrien. Perfect, amazing, kind Adr- I turned to face Chat at his interruption. "This is getting painful." Quickly, Chat cupped my cheeks, pulling face to his.
Natural. Everything about the kiss was natural. Flowing. Almost as if meant to be. With a gasp, our lips pulled back, eyes wide in exhilaration. But the small distance didn't last for long, and I found myself pushing back roughly, tipping us over so I was lying on top of Chat. "My lady." He breathed in the split second we parted.
It didn't take long after that for my hands to tangle in his mess of hair, tugging ever so gently. His hands trailed down my sides, scraping lightly through my coat. A moment later, our eyes connected, knowing that this was where we pressed our bounds. Our coyness was back, and my bottom lip slid in between my teeth in anticipation. "Dammit, LB." Chat said, pulling me back to him.
It wasn't clear who was going to make the big move, and it didn't seem like Chat was going to. Besides, I wasn't going to let him get away with initiating the whole thing. I was the leader here. With a breath against Chat's mouth, my tongue slid forward tentatively, touching his lower one before darting back into the recesses of my mouth. That was it. Chat gasped in surprise, but his mouth didn't shut after that. It took a moment to work up the courage to actually... french kiss, and the first few seconds were clumsy and disturbing. Another person's tongue in your mouth was weird. There was warmth, and the feeling of something foreign touching your taste buds.
But it was wonderful at the same time. We needed to come up for air almost immediately, considering our hesitance, and instead of going back for more, we stared at each other. With an unspoken agreement, our lips came back softly for another round. I was prepared this time, and we were both curious of the new feelings this way of kissing stirred up. But the kiss had to end, and I had to pull back before it progressed any further.
It was complete, dead, silence, only interrupted by breathing. I realized that Chat's hand had manged to find it's way to my somewhat exposed back. My jacket had slid up several inches, taking my shirt with it, and Chat's fingers tensed and relaxed, massaging the skin there. As much as I would hate to ever admit it, it sent shivers of pleasure up my spine.
"That was..." I breathed, unsure how to finish.
"Ohh, yeah." Chat agreed, nodding.
With a sigh, I collapsed against Chat's front. "Mission accomplished."
"I have to say I quiet enjoyed that one." Chat said, still sounding dazed.
"Did you, now?" I asked.
