Rocket
Generated Prompt of the day: Rocket
___
Beacontown was currently the perfect definition of a gloomy day. The sky was a dark shade of grey, heavy clouds blocking out the sunlight. It was cold, and windy.
Most of the Beacontowners stayed inside, keeping warm by a nice fireplace. There were very few people out on the streets, and those who were out, were all keeping wary eyes on the clouds – preparing themselves in case the rain hit.
One specific young man was walking along the main rode of town, his hands stuck in his pockets, a thick scarf waving behind him in the wind. He was walking slowly, admiring the scenery around him. It was clear that he was taking a mere Sunday stroll, definitely not heading somewhere specific.
His gaze fell on a specific, large building. The grey walls were overgrown in moss, the majestic large pillars cracking. The building seemed old and forgotten, it's large doors not having opened in years.
The man quietly watched the old building, his brown eyes filled with memories. Happy ones... sad ones.
He looked around a bit, not wanting to seem suspicious. Once he was certain he was in fact alone, he stepped onto the sidewalk, walking into the overgrown yard.
Personally, he didn't consider it trespassing. After all, he used to always be allowed on these grounds, back when he worked for Jesse.
Radar's eyes slowly moved over the run-down garden, flowerbeds that used to be filled with tulips now overgrown with weeds. The small birch trees that used to barely offer any shade were now large, towering about as high as the roof of the Order Hall.
Radar ran his hands along the cracked walls as he ventured behind the large building. A broken down structure caught his eyes, probably all that was left of their once-glamorous stables. If he closed his eyes he could still imagine seeing the horses' heads poking over the half-doors, scraping their hooves on the floor.
Radar opened his eyes again, sighing. It was hard to see the place in it's current state, especially when you're somebody who used to see it every day back when it was bustling with life.
He walked along the back yard, the dead grass crunching beneath his boots, the occasional thorn getting stuck in the soles.
Radar walked up the cracked steps of the back porch, wiping some dust off the glass windows. He peered inside.
It was dark, but he could make out the many trophy stands that used to hold the treasures of the Order. Most of the items were still there, covered in dust and cobwebs. Only the most valuable items were gone.
The amulet, the Nether star, the atlas and the enchanted flint and steel's pedestals were all empty. These trophies were some of the only items that Jesse took with her when she left...
Radar pulled away from the window, leaning back against the wall. Jesse's disappearance a few years back had left the entire Beacontown devastated, Radar the most. After all, it appeared he had been one of the last people to speak to her.
It wasn't really a secret any more, that Jesse wasn't happy in her home town. She was the only member of the Order left after all, the others all living quite far apart.
Then one morning, she just didn't show up to work at the office. The Order Hall was empty, nothing out of place except for the four missing treasures. No notes were left, no clues whatsoever.
Jesse's friends had been contacted. Neither Axel or Olivia knew anything about where Jesse headed off to, both of them stating that they haven't even spoken to her in weeks.
Lukas's old cottage was found empty, locals from nearby villages saying he's moved away from it months ago.
Soon the Beacontowners just gave up the search for Jesse, accepting that she's either met up with Petra on her adventures, or Lukas – wherever he was in the world. Maybe the three of them were together even? It was a mystery.
For years to come, Radar had refused to believe it. Every day he'd walk back to the Order Hall, praying he'd see a movement behind the curtains. Every day he'd wait at the gates, wishing to see a figure returning in the distance. Until he eventually gave up hope.
Radar slid down against the wall, till he was sitting flat on the empty porch. His eyes landed on a large planter, merely a ruler's length away from him. The soil was dry, except for the very edge of the planter where the rain must've been able to reach. A tiny stem of green was poking through the ground, reaching for sunlight.
Radar got onto his knees, leaning forward to examine the tiny plant. It was in fact what he expected it to be, and it brought back memories from the last time he ever spoke to Jesse. It was a day just as windy and cold as their current weather.
---------------------------
"Jesse?" Radar called, his eyes scanning the empty yard.
"I'm out back!" A voice called in return.
Radar walked around the back of the house, following his boss's familiar voice. Jesse was on her knees on the porch by a wooden planter, holding a watering can in one hand. Despite the cold autumn weather, she was dressed lightly. She waved to Radar.
"Hi Radar!"
"Afternoon, Jesse." Radar said, walking up the porch steps.
"What brings you here?" Jesse asked, putting down the watering can and wiping her muddy hands on her jeans.
"I just wanted to make sure everything was OK." Radar said. "You left work early, which is unusual."
"Yeah, sorry." Jesse said, tucking a string of hair behind her ear. "I couldn't concentrate at all today. I kind of just want to spend some time outside."
Radar nodded. "Aren't you cold though?" He asked in concern. "You're not even wearing a jacket, while it's really chilly out. "
"I like this weather." Jesse said with a shrug. "It's always suited me better than the long, hot days of summer."
She leaned down slightly, gently touching one of the tiny plants' leaves with her finger.
"Kind of like the rocket." She said, pointing out certain plants. "It grows much better in cool weather, faster as well. Planting these guys in summer is just cruel."
"I never knew you were into plants." Radar admitted, kneeling down on the other side of the planter, examining the tiny plants Jesse was showing to him.
"I'm no big gardener." Jesse admitted. "It just helps keep my mind of things."
"What type of things?" Radar asked curiously.
Jesse didn't seem to hear his question, just continuing on. "Plus, I've always liked to keep a little vegetable garden out back, no matter how small." She went on. "I swear food tastes better when there's a touch of home-grown vegetables in."
"I wouldn't know." Radar admitted. "I can't even keep a cactus alive."
Jesse just chuckled at his words, shaking her heat.
"The rocket is a personal favourite of mine." She said, once again pointing to the tiny plants she pointed out earlier. "Mixed into one of Olivia's salads? Perfect."
Her face fell slightly. "It's different now, eating alone most days." A sad smile appeared on her lips. "Petra never liked the rocket, always complaining that it was just a spicy substitute for spinach."
Radar listened intently as Jesse talked on about the tiny little plants, seemingly getting completely lost in the past.
"Have you ever had it?" Jesse asked, looking up.
"Nah, I'm not much of a cook." Radar said. "I don't think I've ever even seen it before now."
"Here." Jesse quickly said, getting up. She picked up a small plastic bag from her table, holding it out to Radar. It appeared to be freshly harvested.
"It's strong in flavour." She warned, placing the bag in Radar's hands.
"Are you sure Jesse?" Radar asked. "Don't you want to use these yourself?"
Jesse shook her head. "Nah, I don't think I'll need it. You have it."
Radar stood up, carefully clutching the small bag of green leaves. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Jesse said, smiling at him. "You better get home quickly though, don't want it to go bad in that plastic packet."
"Right, of course." Radar said, turning to leave down the steps.
"Enjoy the rest of your day, Jesse!" He called back to her, waving one last time before leaving.
Little did he know, the rocket he was holding would be the last gift she'll ever give him.
___
I just wrote a one shot.
About a vegetable.
What.
XDD
I decided to write about the rocket plant, really not knowing how to interpret an actual rocket into this XD Honestly though, if it wasn't for the fact that we feed rocket to our bearded dragons, I might not even have known it existed.
At first I was going to write about Jesse starting a little vegetable garden to keep her mind off of deteriorating friendships, but then I got this idea.
I like leaving ya'll with a mystery as well. Where do you think Jesse disappeared off to, where do you think she ended up? ;)
That's all I really have to say, lol. I'll see you all tomorrow with whatever the word generator spits out next!
