June 2 -- Anything zombie related!
I always knew I'd spend the rest of my life with Avery. The day we met, that was exactly what I told my friends. It's true, really. I'd tell you to ask them but, well, they're all dead now so I suppose you'll just have to take my word for it. Now probably isn't the time for that story though.
"Are you sure you wanna do this?" I asked and Avery's stony expression only grew more rigid.
"Of course I am. This is the only way."
"Not the only way."
"You know what the alternative is, right?"
I thought about it for a second, listening to the dead fingernails scratching on the other side of the door. "It might not be so bad." There were more fingernails now, the gentle pounding of an uncoordinated fist.
"There's only one way out of this," Avery said and I felt the grip on my arms tighten. "And I can't think of anyone I'd rather do it with. We have the power here, we can do this our way."
"I'm scared."
"You don't have to be. I'm here and I love you."
"I love you too." The zombies outside were gathering more of their kind. That was how they worked, they found food and they called to their friends with that wordless, breathless groan. I had seen the horde before we locked ourselves in here, they would all be at the door soon.
Avery let me go and turned to our emergency bag. I could hear our intended weapons rattling and the sound somehow chilled me even more than the groaners at the door. Avery pulled two bottles from the bag, both orange with childproof white lids. "Come over here with me." My lover's voice was shaking, I could see a glisten of sorrow. "We can lie down together and just fall asleep."
"We could still try fighting our way through."
"There's no way we'll get out. Face it, we're way outnumbered."
"So we just give up?"
"No, we take control of the end of our own story. I'd rather die in each other's arms than be ripped open and eaten alive." We sat in the corner furthest from the door. It wasn't easy swallowing all those pills without water but when we were done Avery smiled at me. "You want me to sing you a song?"
A drop spilled out over my lashes and down my dirty cheek. "Yeah," I said, "that might be nice."
We pressed our bodies together and Avery sang quietly in my ear. The sound of it let me push out the sounds of the zombies and as I felt the calming influence of the drugs I swear we were transported out of that closet, out of the city, the world. It was just my lover and me, then just Avery's song, just my beating heart and then even that was gone.
I always knew I'd spend the rest of my life with Avery.
