Day 9. Main Character's Motivation
9: Talk about your main character and what motivates him/her
Inner Demon
Reyna is ID's main character in case you’re wondering. Poor girl gets thrown into something totally out of her control what with a demon waking up in her and stuff. I see Reyna as a naïve girl that cares way too much for her own good. Reyna usually puts others first and it ends up with her going in over her head with things.
She is concerned for other people’s feelings so much that it dictates her actions; she rather spare their feelings than address them with the issue. Reyna tiptoes around Dante and pushes him away ‘cause she doesn’t want to hurt his feelings, but mostly she doesn’t want Mundus to kill him.
Her own overwhelming emotions and desire to make other happy also makes her do crazy things. Reyna ends up dropping everything, including her high school graduation, and goes to the freakin’ demon world to help Mundus get his body back. She didn’t have to. He could’ve gone by himself, but she wanted to help him and make sure he was okay, so she went.
Towards the end of the book, Reyna has gone through lots of pain and betrayal and a buncha other stuff that finally makes her mature a little and think for herself. She needs to learn to understand what she wants before diving into trying to make others happy.
Act of a Demon
Reyna is definitely more grown up now. She has control of her emotions and is clear headed enough to know that her feelings towards Mundus are something she should let go.
Though she doesn’t know the full extent of the war, she understands it’s going on and its potential to ruin whatever is left of humanity; she already lost her family and most of her friends. Reyna doesn’t want to feel weak or be weak anymore, so she gladly trains with Gahn and Dante, ready to defend anyone or anything that may need her protection, including herself.
Despite her newfound power and emotional stability, she feels alien and inhuman surrounded by a buncha demons, so when she starts living with Verden, she quickly makes friends there and they become her new family. Reyna finds happiness there for the first time in a while, giving her a chance to live as “normal” as it can get.
The human interaction helps her cope with the reality that her home may be long gone, and that’s why she stays with Verden in hopes of protecting what may be the last remains of humanity. In her new home, Reyna may have also started to see things clearly as far as the romantic side of her life is concerned...
Calathus
Sianna knew from a young age that her life wasn’t exactly glamorous, so when she loses what was dear to her—her mother’s songs—she basically just says, “Fuck it!” and enters The Guard. It is there where she toughened up and became the gritty woman that she is now.
She really didn’t have any aspirations to be promoted in the Guard. She just saw it as her means to survive because she knew despite her ‘what if’ fantasies, if she hadn’t joined the Guard, she was either going to just end up on the streets as a pickpocket or in a brothel as a whore.
Though she got promoted when she didn’t want to, Sianna is going to take on her new position with all she has, including putting up with a Rhokin she doesn’t want.
