Chapter 22
Myungsuk rocked on the balls of his feet, humming as he looked around. Hanging over the registration desk was a poster that spanned the entire wall, displaying the new exhibits: ancient Egypt, the deep ocean, and the milky way. Myungsuk giggled and gripped his backpack straps.
"Are you excited?" Insoo asked.
"Yes," Myungsuk chirped and stood on his toes.
Insoo wore jeans and a button-up. At first, Myungsuk thought the design on his shirt were abstract lines, but up close, he could make out tiny doodled cats. It was so cute that Myungsuk squeaked every time he looked over.
Myungsuk adjusted his mask, muffling his giggles. If he bought the same shirt, they could match on their next date.
"Next," the person at the registration desk called out.
"That's us," Myungsuk said excitedly and bounced to the desk. He pulled out his strawberry wallet and handed it to the beta. "Hello. Two tickets for the Milky Way exhibit, please," he said, successfully practiced.
"Good job," Insoo whispered before paying. Myungsuk beamed, hiding his head against Insoo's arm.
They got their tickets, and Myungsuk linked their arms and led Insoo to the entrance. After they got in, Myungsuk slowed down his pace, walking beside Insoo rather than dragging him along.
From there, they headed down the stairs to exhibit C.
They passed the double doors into the dark room. The walls and ceiling were peppered with sparkling lights, mimicking stars.
"Wow," Myungsuk breathed out and leaned towards Insoo. "This is going to be really fun for sure."
Insoo nodded and scanned their tickets in. "Yeah. I can't wait."
"Mhm!" Myungsuk nodded. "Come. Come," he said and hurried around the corner. If the entrance was pretty, the hall was majestic.
The planetarium dome sparkled under the spotlight at the end of the exhibit, surrounded by various interactive stations and models. All while the walls sparkled with the same delicate stars, spotlights illuminating the pictures on the walls.
"Will you be okay?" Insoo whispered, leaning over.
Myungsuk blinked and tilted his head at him.
"There's a lot of people here," he pointed out. Myungsuk looked around, noticing the people this time, spaced out throughout the exhibit. Myungsuk smiled and nodded. "I'll be okay. Everyone's keeping to themselves."
"That's good."
Insoo had expressed his concern when Myungsuk first suggested the museum, and while Insoo was vague about what his worries were, it didn't take a genius to know that no one wanted a repeat of last time.
Biting the inside of his cheek, Myungsuk reached out and took his hand. Insoo blinked in surprise, and Myungsuk turned away, blushing. "This helps," he muttered.
"Oh." Insoo's expression changed into a shy smile, and he squeezed his hand.
Sparks flew up Myungsuk's arm, and he shivered. He forced himself to stop staring at Insoo's handsome face and shifted his attention back to the exhibit.
Myungsuk stopped at the first photo. It was an ancient photograph of a wall in Greece depicting the milky way. "The Greeks believed the milky way was good luck. They had a story that if you kissed someone while the milky way was the brightest, that means they're your mate."
"Really?" Insoo asked. "That's really interesting."
"Yup," Myungsuk grinned. "That's why they had so many festivals in late summer. Because that's when the milky way is brightest over Europe."
"Do you believe in that?"
Myungsuk tilted his head. "It's known the milky way is brightest in late summer."
Insoo chuckled. "I mean... about the mate thing."
"It's hard to say," he said with a shrug. "There's a lack of evidence."
Insoo's sudden laugh made Myungsuk jump.
"Did I say something funny?"
Shaking his head, Insoo took a deep breath. "Sorry, I just–" He chuckled. "Every scientist needs evidence, huh?"
Myungsuk relaxed and smiled."Yup! We have to, or we'd just be philosophers."
"Agreed," Insoo said, his bright smile still on his face. So handsome.
Blushing, Myungsuk forced himself to look away. "Let's move on," he mumbled and tugged Insoo to the next picture, diving right into the details of more modern discoveries.
"Am I talking too much?" Myungsuk asked when they got to the first station. He realized after four detailed pictures Insoo hadn't said much, breaking Myungusk's three-sentence rule.
Insoo shook his head. "No, it's okay," he said and smiled earnestly. "I like hearing you talk. I'm learning a lot."
"Really?" Myungsuk asked, not entirely convinced. "But you're so smart."
Insoo chuckled and shrugged. "Not about space. I've never really studied it." When Myungsuk still pouted, Insoo looked around.
"I promise I'll talk more when we get there," he said and pointed across the hall to a displayed satellite replica. "I'll teach you about satellites if you keep teaching me about stars. Deal?"
With his lips pursed, Myungsuk cracked a smile. Everyone had their specialties, he supposed. "Deal."
They continued around the exhibit, swinging their hands. Myungsuk did most of the talking, explaining every picture, display, and occasionally the activities when they weren't playing them.
"How many stars are in the milky way?" Insoo read the screen, hovering his hands over the four brightly coloured buttons.
The moment the options lit up and the timer started, Myungsuk froze, balling his hands up. "It's hundreds of billions! It's hundreds of billions!"
Laughing, Insoo slapped down the blue button. The screen lit up, and the little astronaut mascot danced around. Myungsuk grinned, bouncing on his toes. Of course, he'd get all of them right. "That was fun."
"Yeah. A lot more intense than I thought. There was no time," Insoo said, holding his hand out.
"Well, it was on hard mode," Myungsuk hummed and took his hand.
They walked over to the next station, which was a replica of Voyager 1 and 2. Myungsuk stood on his toes, grinning. "Your turn to teach me."
Smiling, Insoo nodded. "Well, these are replicas of Voyager 1 and 2, and they're actually space probes. Satellites are something that orbits a celestial body. But these are for exploration."
"Yup! And they're the farthest objects, and they both have a golden record," Myungsuk rambled before snapping his mouth shut. "Oops.". It was supposed to be Insoo's turn.
Chuckling, Insoo gently squeezed Myungusk's hand. "You're right."
Insoo looked over the models, scratching his chin, before leading Myungsuk around their giant antennas, pointing to its body. "The record would be stored in there," he said before gesturing to the top arm. "At the very top is the scan platform. That's where all the cameras and spectrometers are. It takes all the information from all those devices and images are put together."
"Wow," Myungsuk breathed out, staring at the collection of devices. Without them, Neptune's surface would still be a mystery.
"It's impressive, right? But, my favourite part is its power," Insoo said and walked over to the other side of the model, pointing to another arm, his own hand beyond the roped divider.
Myungsuk tilted his head. Why would they make the power an extension? "It isn't a part of the body?" He asked.
Insoo nodded. "It's because all the electronics are in there," he said, and Myungsuk nodded.
With a smile on his face, Insoo leaned further, tapping the model. Myungsuk squeaked and quickly looked around, making sure no one saw.
"These are three MHW-RTG radioisotope thermoelectric generators. And they're powered by plutonium-238. Which isn't the same as the isotope used in nuclear weapons despite popular belief," Insoo pointed out. "That's plutonium-239."
Myungsuk bit back his smile and nodded. "Understood."
"Good," Insoo said before focusing back on the generators. "And you can't see it here, but they're different layers inside with spheres full of fuel. The interior is really fascinating. This type was made specifically for the Voyagers, and now are the same principles found in other spacecrafts and some planes."
When Insoo pulled away, rubbing the back of his neck. "And, uh, yeah," he said, letting out a sheepish laugh. "I didn't realize I could talk that much. Sorry if it's boring."
Myungsuk shook his head. "No, that was fascinating," he insisted, staring up at him with bright eyes. Learning from Insoo made everything way more fun.
He got to see Insoo in his zone, and it made Myungsuk's heart flutter. This wasn't the polite, quiet Insoo that everyone at the cafe knew him as. This was the Insoo Myungsuk knew. Intelligent, bubbly, and energetic.
Insoo blushed and looked down at their hands. "Do you want to move on?"
"If you want to," Myungsuk said, squeezing his hand. If Insoo wanted to stay here for another hour and talk, that was fine by him.
They did eventually move on, the number of people dwindling as lunchtime approached.
"Last stop," Myungsuk muttered as they walked towards the planetarium. Well, Myungsuk couldn't call it a planetarium since it was too small, but that's what the label said.
He followed Insoo inside through the narrow archway, squeezing close to him. And when they entered, Myungsuk looked up and gasped.
The dome surrounded them in dazzling light, thousands of sparkling constellations. He spotted dots of planets moving across the sky, mimicking the passage of time.
"This is amazing," Myungsuk breathed out and turned to Insoo, his body speckled in light, his own expression in awe.
"It really is." Insoo's moon-crescent eyes were filled with stars, painting a universe inside him. A universe Myungsuk wanted to be a part of.
His heart pounded in his chest, and a warmth swirled in his stomach, acutely aware that Insoo was an alpha. His toasty, warm scent wrapping around them and Myungsuk couldn't help but lower his guard, his own sweetness daring to sweep out.
When Insoo's nostrils flared and stared at him, Myungsuk's body moved on its own. He stood on his toes and gripped his fingers around Insoo's shirt, pulling them closer. Insoo's breath tickled Myungsuk's lips and down his neck, fueling the warmth inside him.
Myungsuk fluttered his eyes closed, puckering his lips as Insoo drew in, closing the gap between them.
Sparks was nowhere near as powerful to describe the feelings of Insoo's lips on his. It was like a supernova explosion sending shockwaves through every corner of the galaxy.
Insoo's lips were soft and warm and felt so right. He felt the corners of Insoo's mouth curve into a smile, and Myungsuk whined in delight, his legs buckling and gripping his shirt tighter.
Of all the planets, how lucky was Myungsuk to be born on the same one as Insoo, kissing him when the milky way was brightest in the simulated sky.
Insoo pulled away, and Myungsuk followed his lips until he stumbled forward. Insoo chuckled and held him upright.
"Boyfriend," Myungsuk mumbled, his head still spinning.
Insoo furrowed his brows. "What?"
Myungsuk placed his hands on Insoo's arms, pulling himself up and closer, his heart racing. "Be my boyfriend," he repeated. He searched Insoo's face. He needed his answer. He needed it now!
Insoo cupped his cheeks; his face shone brighter than all the stars as his smile reached ear to ear. "Yes. I'll be your boyfriend," he said. "But only under one condition."
Myungsuk held his breath."What is it?"
Insoo smirked. "If you'll be my boyfriend back."
Breaking into a smile, Myungsuk giggled and nodded. "Yes!"
Laughing, Insoo pulled away, his cheeks red. His own cheeks were burning without Insoo's cold hands on them. "Um, I think we both need to cool down," Myungsuk said with a nervous giggle as he fanned his face with his hands.
"Yeah." Insoo took his hand, lacing their fingers together. "Let's get out of here."
