Part 3: The Kingdom for the Poor
Matthew 5:3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed came from the Greek word that can be translated as 'happy'. So we can translate this passage as 'happy are the poor in spirit'. Poverty in the spirit simply means acknowledging our emptiness. Acknowledging that we are sinners, dead in sin, and can only enter the kingdom of heaven, through the goodness, mercy and grace of our God. It is acknowledging that apart from the grace of God through Christ and the cross, we are pitiful, wretched and lost. Those who acknowledge their sinful condition and ask for repentance are the only one who are fit to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Prayer:
"O God and Father, I repent of my sinful preoccupation with the visible things. The world has been too much with me. Thou hast been here and I knew it not. I have been blind to Thy presence. Open my eyes that I may behold Thee in and around me. For Christ's sake, Amen. "
