No!
Amara's day had unraveled into a chaotic symphony of physical discomfort and emotional distress. The persistent nausea that had gripped her seemed to transcend the realm of ordinary morning sickness. Disoriented and weakened, she staggered towards her bathroom, attempting to steady her swaying body.
Her ears rang with an unsettling resonance, drowning out the world around her. A massive headache throbbed in her temples, intensifying with each step. Bloodshot eyes betrayed the countless tears she had shed over her now ex-boyfriend, a source of heartache that seemed to amplify her physical malaise. Hopelessness clung to her like a heavy shroud.
As Amara reached the bathroom, her room door creaked open. Startled, she turned her head to find Juliet, her sister, searching for her. "Mars? Where'd you go?" Juliet's voice echoed in the room. Unbeknownst to Amara, her body started to lean backward involuntarily.
A sudden thud resonated from the bathroom, prompting Juliet to drop the tea she was carrying on Amara's desk. Panic seized her as she rushed to investigate the source of the noise, only to find her sister sprawled on the bathroom floor. A strangled cry escaped Juliet's lips as she assessed the dire situation. Desperation fueled her screams for assistance as Amara's vision faded into an ominous black abyss.
Meanwhile, Oakley, oblivious to the unfolding crisis, sauntered into his hotel room. He nonchalantly removed his phone from "do not disturb" mode, dismissing the initial call with an indifferent eye roll. However, the persistence of the caller led him to answer, albeit with a yawn-laden greeting.
"Hello?" Cee mumbled, his drowsiness evident.
"Fam, where the fuck are you?" Dave's voice erupted through the phone, urgency palpable.
Cee's brow furrowed in confusion. "What are you talking about?" he responded, a sudden alarm gripping him.
"Amara is in the hospital," Dave declared, breathless and anxious. The revelation sent a shockwave through Cee, his heart plummeting.
"Are you there yet?" Cee asked, a surge of adrenaline propelling him into immediate action. Keys in hand, he bolted out of the hotel, the urgency in Dave's voice resonating in his ears. "Everyone else is here, but you, Oakley," Dave added before ending the call.
The engine roared to life as Oakley sat behind the wheel, his mind singularly focused on the unfolding crisis. The word "fuck" lingered on his lips, encapsulating the gravity of the situation he was about to confront.
Amara's eyes opened to the horrible but familiar sight of blaring hospital lights as she hears voices all around her. She swallows as her eyes dart around the room when her eyes land on this blurry lanky figure with tattoos that trailed up his...Oh no.
"For fucks sakes why is he here?" she mutters glaring at him annoyed while everyone's eyes were on her. "I see you're awake" Her doctor says walking into the room with a clipboard. "Why am I here again?" she says confused. "You fainted Mars" Dave says being the first one to speak out of all of the people who showed up for her.
"I did?" she said as her head turned to him immediately which she immediately regretted because of the horrid migraine she currently had. Everyone around her nods and she looks at them which leads to her mistakenly landing her eyes on Cench. She stares at him with a feeling she didn't know how to express while he stared at her with concern as he silently studied her sickly looking features.
"You most definitely did. I ran your heart work through the ECG and everything seems to be normal on that front. You fainted because of stress" the doctor says and Amara squints her eyes.Amara shifted uncomfortably in the sterile hospital bed, trying to process the information. Stress-induced fainting? She scoffed internally, dismissing the notion.
"I'm not stressed," she asserted, her voice slightly hoarse from the recent ordeal. Her eyes darted across the concerned faces surrounding her – friends and family who had rushed to her side. Among them was Cench, his gaze a mixture of worry and something she couldn't quite decipher.
They all continue to look at her with what she thought was pity. Amara shook her head defiantly, stubbornness flaring in her eyes. "I'm not some delicate flower who wilts under pressure. I can handle my own life just fine. Stop fucking pittying me"
Juliet, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. "Amara, no one's pitying you. We just care about you, and seeing you collapse like that... It's scary." Amara's face softens at her sister's statement. "I'll be fine Julie. There's no need to be scared" she says, giving her a small smile.
"Well with some well needed rest you should be fine" the doctor says not sensing the thick tension in the room. "When can I leave?" she says, turning to him. "Tomorrow. We'll do a few more tests just to make sure everything's alright but otherwise you should be fine." her doctor said leaving and everybody nodded.
"You eat today?" Dave says, interrupting the silence. "Nah. Didn't feel like it" she says shrugging back into the bed. "You need to eat Amara. You're growing a kid in you" Juliet says letting out a sigh out of concern as she grabbed Amara's wallet from her bedside table. "Why my wallet?"Amara says scrunching up her face. "It's your food isn't it?" Julie retorts back and Cench passes her a stack instead.
"Oh I want to spend Cench's money! Julie, wait!" David says running out the door after the young adult leaving Cench and Amara in the room by themselves. "How much money did you give them?" she says, picking up her phone to text Ettinnette back. "300" he says nonchalantly and she looks up at him from her phone. "For the vending machine?" she says, looking at him sideways.
"It's not much and you need food" he says shrugging. "Vending machine snacks aren't food" she says going back on her phone. Amara's fingers moved mechanically across the phone screen as she continued the conversation with Ettinnette. Cench observed her with a distant detachment, his concern lingering beneath the surface. The room felt heavy with unspoken tension, a subtle exchange of glances and concealed emotions.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Amara finally broke the silence, her gaze meeting Cench's, but there was a noticeable distance in her expression.
"Just making sure you're okay," he replied, his voice calm but carrying a trace of uncertainty.
"I told you, I'm fine," Amara retorted, her tone colder, a defensive barrier evident in her words. She felt a mix of irritation and suspicion, the emotions creating a subtle barrier between them.
Cench sighed, leaning back in the uncomfortable hospital chair. "Amara, you don't have to pretend with me. We all care about you, and seeing you like this... it's concerning." Amara shifted uncomfortably, a guarded expression playing on her face. "I don't need anyone's concern. I can handle myself," she muttered, her gaze dropping back to her phone.
Cench hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "It's not about prying. We just want to be here for you, whether you want it or not." She scoffed. "Go be there for Kenza and leave me alone. I don't want you here" Amara says and Cench's heart feels like it's being ripped in half.
What was he to do about this situation?
He looked down ashamed of himself. He really did feel bad that he let Kenza do that to him.
"I-We're back!' Juliet says interrupting Oakley as she drops a bucketload of snacks on Amara's bed. Mara sits up shuffling through the snacks until she lays her eyes on a packet of Jaffa Cakes immediately grabbing them. She tears open the package biting into the soft cake. "I wish I had cheese" she mutters into the cake and Julie looks at her disgusted as she reaches into her bag for her birth control.
After Juliet swallows the pill she clears her throat. "Anyways.Who's going to stay with Mars cause I have school in a week?" she says, popping a starburst into her mouth."I'm going to the states tomorrow so no" Dave says plopping himself down on one of the hospital chairs. Julie looks at Cench and then at her sister who immediately shakes her head.
"No. Not in a million years" she says, taking her head out of the messy bun that occupied it. Everyone shot her a look and she shook her head again.
"No!"
