3. Hoping to stand a chance
The dancing and singing early at four in the morning took a toll on both the tired kids, but Emily – energetic as she was – did not have much to be worried about. Her never-ending energy was quick to be regained just as quickly as it drained.
"Liam, we gotta go," she shook her best friend after she got up around 7.45 in the morning, her head on his chest.
She got off him, trying to untangle her limbs from his as she woke up and climbed on the couch from the carpeted floor where the both of them fell asleep and stretched her body complaining about 'bleeding bad positions' to sleep in.
Noticing the time, she quickly took off, rushing to her own room and throwing her art books into her regular book bag and changing her clothes for school.
She pulled her hair into a very messy, very casual, very half pony or she'd know that some people would throw a fit. Her beat-up sneaks – the one she had been wearing for nearly three years now – slapped against the hardwood floor noisily as she rushed to the refrigerator in hopes of finding something to eat before school.
"Liam!" she called over her shoulder, "It's nearly time for school to start. Get your body off the floor if you don't want to be late!"
She had very little time – only around seven minutes to be exact – to have a smoothie – which she would have to make – wake Liam up and get on the bike to get to the goddamned school and still have time to meet up with her girlfriend whom she hadn't seen in a few days and she missed her terribly.
Emily thanked god – or whoever it was that lived up – for Liam as she took out an orange container that had chopped fruits of various kinds which he made sure to keep stacked at all times and took it to the kitchen.
She tossed them into the steel blender, poured one and a half glass of milk, poured nearly ten tablespoons of sugar – she had quite a sweet tooth and blended them to a smooth consistency.
Emily poured the blended smoothie into two identical plastic glasses with caps on and drew a straw into both of them.
"Liam," she walked to him. One hand clutching her glass, she drew in a mouthful of it and shook him with the other hand, "Liam, we are late!"
But he did not stir even a bit. She shoved him, shaking him by the shoulder, "Wake up, Liam!"
"LIAM!" she yelled, losing her patience, "I can't wait anymore. Come with three damn minutes if you want to get your bloody arse to the fucking school!"
She stormed out of the house, making sure to slam the doors open extra loudly, hoping that he'd wake up.
Liam woke up at the sound of the house bang in the house, jolting upwards.
He stretched his body like a little kitten and yawned, slouching forward and still unwilling to open his eyes until he heard the reeving of the loud engine of the motorbike Emily owned.
His eyes snapped open and he looked at the old antique clock on the peach-coloured walls of the living room. 7.55 AM.
"Jesus, we're late!" he jumped from the floor as he rushed to find the extra empty black Adidas bookbag he kept at the Wonder house in case of emergency. He then rushed to the bathroom and hurried all his necessities as fast as possible.
His face still dripping wet after he washed his face, he skidded across the living room and into the kitchen where his already pre-made smoothie was awaiting him.
"LIAM!" he heard Emily roar, "LAST FUCKING CALL. GET YOUR ASS HERE THIS INSTANT OR I'M GOING TO LEAVE-"
Liam hopped onto the bike, behind Emily, one of the hastily tied shoelaces of his sneakers coming undone and one hand holding the smoothie while the other wiped his face off the excess water, "I'm here. Let's go, Emily."
She did not have to be told twice as she rushed at a speed that even her father would be scared of driving at. The drive of ten minutes to the school was reduced to two minutes and they reached there three minutes ahead of the bell.
As Liam bend down and tied his laces, Emily was already skipping into the school.
"Wait up, Emily!" he hurried to catch up with her.
As they both walked into the school, familiar faces passed by them, always a 'Hey, Wonders!' a 'Chris coming?' or 'Lovely as always, Emily!' being asked as the both of them smiled and nodded in response, only once or twice, yelling something back - but it was most Emily who would yell something inappropriate but no one really minded because it was 'Emily' after all.
"Christ, they just love us, don't they?" she chuckled as they walked side by side on the white tiled floors, their shoes barely making a sound.
Liam shrugged, "Yeah, they love you and Chris."
She turned her head and looked at him, "Hey, someday there will come someone who will notice you, Liam. And mark my words when I say they're gonna terribly fall in love and even if they leave you - which would probably be the most stupid thing in the world - you'll always have me."
She looked right into his piercing blue eyes which she had learned to love, "I will always love you."
"You mean it?" Liam asked, staring into her hazel eyes that were slowly turning more green by the passing years, "I'll always have you, right?"
She rolled her eyes and kept walking forwards, "Can't get rid of me that easy."
Liam shook his head at the absurd thought that she'd love him the way he did. He knew that she had a girlfriend and that she was into girls, but sometimes, he hoped that he stood a chance, just being who he was.
Nerdy, sassy and her best friend, Liam Wyatt.
He was lost in thought that he almost missed the blonde who stood by her locker.
"Oh my god, Ven!" Emily squealed as she rushed to the girl's side.
Venessa Wraith turned around, her mud-brown eyes widening as she looked at her girl. She had been so busy these days they barely met each other anymore.
"EMILY!" she yelled in joy, making a few others turn to look at them. A tiny smile on their faces as both the girls kissed each other full on the lips.
They held each other tight in their arms and even Liam - who had always been a little or more jealous than all Emily's previous girlfriends - had a small but sad smile on his face.
"How are you?" Venessa, her girlfriend, asked breathlessly.
"Could ask the same for you!" Emily told, staring at Venessa's lips, thinking about kissing her again, "Looking good."
Venessa chuckled as she stepped back and pushed a few books into her locker again, "I look hideous, I know. The articles are really taking a toll on me."
"No, you don't," Emily told, looking at her.
Venessa did not even hesitate as she looked at Liam, craning her head to look at him while raising a single eyebrow and he answered truthfully, "Maybe a little more sleep would help."
She looked at Emily with eyes that told 'I told you so'.
"Okay, maybe you've got some dark circles and maybe your black roots are showing, but don't mean you're not my hot adorable favourite girl anymore," Emily told, kissing her.
"I know what you need," Emily smirked, looking at Venessa with hopeful eyes, "A night off. What about the bar we used to sneak into? For old times' sake? Tonight?"
Venessa sighed deeply as she shook her head and slammed her locker shut, "Can't. Your favourite girl is needed."
Emily's hope went down the drain and her expression turned sad in an instant but Venessa was not done, "but I think I can pull some time out - just for us both - tomorrow night."
"Yeah and after the bar, we can come to my place where I'll make you scream my name," Emily's mouth twitched into another smirk.
"Not if I'm on top," Venessa retorted, mirroring her smirk.
"Oh please," Emily scoffed, "We both know that I love being on top. If you want the top, you've got to fight for it."
"Christ, I didn't need to know about your bed positions, but I think I'll make a note to avoid her house," Liam told, trying to be disgusted but was trying to hide his growing smile.
"Jesus!" Venessa jumped, "I keep forgetting that he's still here, babe."
Emily sighed deeply as she shook her head in mock disappointment, "We really need to get him a girl or a guy, or a person at the most!"
Venessa went to Liam's side and bumped her shoulder into his, "You sure aren't into guys unlike your brother, Chris?"
Liam smiled goofily, pretending to be Chris. He mimicked his brother's rough voice, "I told you. I'm into chicks! What you think you saw with Arthur was wrong!"
"Yeah," Emily snorted loudly, "Like dudes sleep nude with other dudes on the same bed."
"He's in denial," Liam told them, "Or at least, I think it's denial."
"Besides," Liam sighed, looking at Emily without trying to get either of them to notice him, "I like girls, and stuff."
"Got for you, Liam," Emily told as she got her books out of the locker and into her bookbag. A small smirk twitching on her face she told, "I like girls and stuff too."
Venessa's lips twitched into a malicious grin, "Are we talking about the same stuff?"
Emily rolled her eyes, "Yes, girlfriend. We are talking about the same 'stuff' we both like- Except my own, they are too small-"
"They aren't small," both Liam and Venessa told in unison and they both looked at each other. Liam winced as he smacked himself internally for the slip of his tongue.
"Should I be concerned?" Venessa asked, smiling as she looked at Liam.
"Nah," Liam shook her off, "She just takes me for lingerie shopping. All those bras you take off, I just see them first."
"Christ, Liam!" Emily roared as she shoved him against a locker, red in the face but trying to hide them behind her hands, "You're so- gosh!"
"Don't worry babe," Venessa whispered as she rubbed her girlfriend's shoulder with her palms, "He's just teasing. Plus, I love yours."
"But it's an A!" Emily cried, loud for others to look at her weirdly wondering what was wrong with an A grade.
"So, what?" Venessa told softly, "I still love them. They're small and easier to manage. Take it from me, I've got D- sized, Christ! You have no idea about the problems that come with them."
Emily did manage to cheer up as she looked at Liam who trailed behind them, smiling apologetically as he rubbed the spot Emily threw him.
She turned and hugged Liam around his torso, she mumbled, "Sorry, Liam."
"I'm sorry too, but you have to promise me to never take me lingerie shopping ever again," he smiled at her.
She smiled back, "Promise."
Venessa looked at them with fondness until her phone in the back pocket of her red jeans vibrated, looking at the both of them, she told, "Sorry, but I've got to go. Serena, the new girl, can't stop getting into trouble."
"Alright, catch you later," Emily smiled, hugging her girlfriend.
Venessa smiled back and began walking the other way but still looking at the both of them she told, "Be good. And Liam?"
"Yeah?" he looked at her.
"Take care of my girl," she told him.
Liam wrapped his free arm around Emily's shoulder as he yelled back to her, "Always!"
She vanished into the corner and Emily let her hand drop to her side as she looked at the corner.
After a second or two, she faced her best friend – whose arm was still around her – and asked, "Shall we get to it?"
Liam nodded as he walked towards their own lockers.
Stuffing his books into his bag, he looked at Emily as she did the exact opposite of what he did. Cramming books into the locker.
They both slammed their lockers in unison as though it were a rehearsed move and then, Emily searched her bag for her schedule.
"First class, Chemistry," Emily read out.
Liam looked at her as she cheered in a very unenthusiastic spirit, "Chemistry test, here we come. Yay."
He handed her his textbook which always had scribbles on the edges and told her, "Here you go."
Emily grumbled as she opened the text and squinted to read his tiny handwriting, "They only just started a new year and tests?! What are they planning to do? Kill us with tests?!"
"Uh- Hello?" Liam mocked as he looked wide-eyed to his best friend, "It's been half the first semester already?"
"Ugh," Emily made a face, "I really need to start studying..."
Liam told her, a grin in place, "You sure have to."
She looked at him with hopeful eyes and they both knew exactly what was happening. This was what happened every time since they both knew each other.
"No, Emily," Liam told, firm in his tone, "Absolutely not. We both discussed that it was the last time."
"Oh, come on, Liam!" she yelled, a crazy grin on her face, "I swear this is the last time I ask this. Just one last time."
"It happens every time!" he shot back, "Its been the same since grade six!"
"But Liam!" she dragged his name, "I have to get this test right."
Liam sped up his walking speed, "Well, you should have thought about it before."
They both were nearly at a running speed now and people were giving them weird stares. All she had to do was lift up two fingers and they all went back to their own works.
"Please, Liam," Emily begged, "I swear I'll study. I'll do everything you ask of me to. I'll leave partying and staying out late... I'll change myself and be like you. A ninety-nine-year-old man who never has any fun."
"Ha ha, very funny," Liam mocked, rolling his eyes.
"Please Liam," she asked of him.
"Fine!" Liam faced her, stopping so abruptly that she nearly dashed into someone else, "But I swear that this is the last time."
The bell rang shrill at that moment and students began filling. Each one headed to their own rooms and the both of them trudged up the stairs too.
Before they headed into the classroom, Liam sighed deeply. Regretting about the thing he was about to do, he mumbled, "I don't know why I am friends with you in the first place."
"Well, I love you too," Emily winked at him as they both walked into the classroom and took their seats. Ready for a test and another very long day.
