CHAPTER 18 - THE APPOINTMENT

"Can you turn the TV off now. It's getting late and we need to wake up early for the appointment tomorrow" he pleaded.

"Honey, it's only 9:30" she chuckled. "You're making me feel old again. Did you remember to take out your dentures, old man."

"You're hilarious..." he sarcastically remarked. "I'm being serious. We have a big day tomorrow."

"Can you sit up for a sec?" she implored.

Aaron grunted and raised himself out of the tangled bed sheets, shifting his tired eyes towards her awakened gaze.

"Are you feeling okay?"

"Y-yeah... I'm fine. I'm just tired, that's all" he answered.

"I don't know..." Cara contemplated in another direction. "I just feel like you've been super nervous about the whole IVF thing. A lot of things actually. You keep asking me about my breathing and I don't know why."

Aaron's pulse amplified as he faced Cara's interrogation. He inhaled and optimistically began to explain himself.

"I think..." he started.

"...and honestly" Cara interjected. "It does feel like there's a bit of pressure from you and I'm sure you don't mean it, obviously, but it's definitely there...y'know."

"Hey, can you stop for a second" his voice overshadowed. "Listen, there is one reason and one reason alone why I ask about the breathing."

Aaron swiftly grabbed her softened, pink palms.

"I once knew someone that had breathing issues. They weren't born with it, but they ended up with these issues after going through some... something. This person, she had a baby girl, named Rose... it didn't make it."

He tried his hardest to not let his true emotions show. The room was dead silent as Cara hesitated to move closer towards him.

"Do you... would I know these people?" Cara asked.

"No. Not really."

She rustled the back of his dark, oily hair. Her touch sent goose bumps over his entire drowsy body.

"I want our baby to be one hundred and ten percent healthy... and if that means a little pressure comes from me, then so be it. I'm not letting something like that go to chance. Do you understand?" he explained.

"You're right. Yeah, I do. I'm sorry, maybe I was overthinking it. Let's just go to bed" she decided.

"I love you" she whispered.

"I love you too."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a night of stillness and peace, Aaron awakened to his alarm. He speedily jumped into the shower, escorted his wife into the car and headed for their final IVF appointment with Doctor Elaine.
Their moderate journey showed very few cars on the road, which was uncannily similar to the last time. Aaron and Cara's positive conversation from the previous night had certainly affected their overall mood. He took notice of this and thought to himself. Last time we were really nervous. Weren't we? He remembered.
Once they arrived, the couple entered the office, where they were greeted with content smiles and a quickened haste by Doctor Elaine.
"Good morning, it's so good to see you two. How have you been?" Elaine asked emphatically.
Cara couldn't contain her excitement. "We've been really good. Yeah, a little nerves here and there but... overall really trying to stay positive, y'know. You seem really happy today" she noticed.
"Well, just a few minutes before our appointment I was with a woman who was having a little trouble... but it's all good now. My team managed to find the cause of the issue and... she's expected to have a baby in December" she said.
"Was it a middle-aged woman. Probably around our age?" Aaron asked.
"Oh... yes, I guess she would be around your age. How did you... how did you know about that?" Elaine inquired.
Aaron squinted and moved his eyes towards his feet. "I... uh... y'know I've seen her walking around here in the past I think."
Cara tightened her grip on Aaron's palm. "Well, anyway that's really great news."
Elaine failed to hide her smile. "Yes. Thank you, thank you."
Cara cleared her throat, "Elaine, how is everything going with our results? Is there anything out of the ordinary we should know about?"
Doctor Elaine raised her index finger, "Right, I'm going to log in now and tell you everything you need to know."
Cara straightened her posture on the grey office chair, while Elaine typed and clicked away on her desktop with a face of pure focus.
"Here we are. So, the good news is you've both completed everything you need. The stage we are currently at is called the Luteal Phase..."
Aaron slouched in his position on the chair upon hearing Elaine's babbling for the second time. Cara grabbed his hand and had no intention of letting go. He interlocked his fingers with hers, calming her in the process.
"Do you have any questions?" asked Elaine.
"Uh, no... I think we are good for now. I know we are in good hands" said Cara as she faced her husband and caressed his left arm.
"Yes" Aaron agreed, "I think we should be just fine."
"Oh, you will be more than fine. You two are fighters and, I know you will be there for each other" Elaine affirmed.
"We will..." Aaron declared as he shook Elaine's hand with a firm grip and exited the room.
The couple was greeted with loving smiles as they made their way to the car, holding hands and walking at a steady pace.
"What was the name of that baby you told me about last night?" Cara inquired as she gripped onto the car door.
Aaron paused as he buckled in his seatbelt. "Her name was... Rose."
"Rose. That's such a nice name, don't you think?"
"It's a really beautiful name. Why? What are you thinking honey?" he questioned.
"Well... since we both love that name. Why don't we call our baby, Rose? If it's a girl of course" she suggested.
Aaron relaxed his arms and began to chuckle. "Okay, then it's settled. Rose it is."
"But wait" Cara disrupted. "We still need to think of a boy's name, silly."
"I don't know, honey. Something tells me it's gonna be a girl" he smirked.
"I just have a feeling..."
