86. Courage forward

Normally I put a fave LexisandHera tweet but this had me taken aback.

If we kill Maeve, will the sudden plot twists stop? Maybe then Lexis wouldn't discover shit and they'd get married already.

Once he calms down he places his head against her shoulder.

"No one," She says looking ahead.

"You've hated for over 20 years and here you are, maybe it's time to take a different approach,"

"Love, love your brother and give him the love you never showed him growing up, the love your mother, father and aunt stole from you two. That's how the healing process starts. With time and with an effort to fix the broken relationship between you two, I know you'll be okay,"

"Forgive yourself, you were a victim just as Nathan was," She says.

"Based on my past conversation with Nathan he's also a victim of the lies of your parents. He did try his best Lexis to get me to your side when you were unconscious in England but his efforts were blocked by them unbeknownst to him. I'm sure like you he hates himself right now just as much,"

"He didn't know the truth, he was lied to like you by many and I never corrected his wrong ideas. For that I also wronged him,"

"The older generation made a lot of mistakes but it's up to us to learn from that and walk a different path." She says as someone calls out.

"Mummy?"

Hera raises her head as does Lexis glancing down the hallway. They notice a little silhouette.

"Shakes...Alexandria?" Hera calls out.

"Mummy! " Alexandria calls out running towards the two. Who were now standing.

She runs towards Lexis who scoops her up in his arms as she giggles placing a smile on his face.

"Daddy did you cwy?" She asks.

Lexis nods.

"Don't cwy, it'll be okay, Mummy's here and I'm here!" She exclaims placing her hand on her chest with her head held up causing Lexis to chuckle.

"I love you," Lexis says placing his forehead against hers.

"I love you more," She replies grinning.

"Alexandria," Maeve calls out from a distance.

"She's here," Lexis calls out to her.

She quickly hurries over.

"I'm sorry, I just got two calls and looked away for a second. I'm sorry, It won't happen again," Maeve apologizes.

"It's okay," Lexis says.

"What was the call about? It had to be important for you to have lost your focus," Lexis says.

"Your mot...no your..Lea turned herself in," Maeve says.

"What?!" Hera exclaims as Lexis eyes thin.

"What else?" Lexis says with a cold tone.

"Nathan...The housekeeper called. She's scared and worried, he seems to have gotten into a huge fight with Lea. I'm guessing this was prior to her turning herself in. Nathan isn't himself and the housekeeper is scared. She's never seen him that way,"

Lexis shuts his eyes as everyone stares at him.

"Let's go,"He says opening them.

"To Nathan?" Maeve asks.

"To my room," He replies walking away.

Sighing Hera quickly follows behind with Maeve by her side.

Once they get to the room. Lexis let's down Alexandria and gets on the bed.

Hera moves to tuck him in but he shakes his head.

"Daddy can we play?" Alexandria asks getting bored.

"Of course, what would you like to play?" He asks.

"Mhmmmm," Alexandria says with her little finger on her lips in thought.

Hera glances at Maeve and back at Lexis.

"Let's dwaw,"

"Draw? I don't have any paper around,"

"Okay then tell me a stowy,"

"A story?" Lexis says in thought.

Alexandria stays quiet looking at him expectantly.

"Let's see," Lexis says.

Alexandria clasps her hands together waiting.

"Let's see," Lexis repeats seemingly distracted.

"Let's see," He repeats again before Hera decides she's seen enough.

"Would you like me to go?" She says finally speaking up.

"Huh?" Lexis says looking at her absentmindedly.

"You're distracted and obviously bothered by the news on Nathan. I can go check on him for you. After-all Nathan and I do have things to hash out, I owe him an apology,"

Lexis stays silent.

"Lexis," Hera prods.

"Thank you," He answers finally.

Smiling Hera gets up and picks her bag.

"Shakes, keep your dad company for me will you? I need to go somewhere for a bit," Hera says.

Alexandria nods vigorously and signs ok with her fingers.

Smiling Hera ruffles her hair. She then looks at Lexis.

"Don't worry, he'll be okay, you'll both be okay," She says and places her hand on his squeezing it before walking out with Maeve.

Having arrived at the house with Maeve. Maeve shows Hera to the room the housekeeper directed them to. Stopping in front of it, Maeve excuses herself letting Hera know she'd be outside should she be needed. Nodding, Hera thanks her.

Taking a deep breath, she opens the door to the room Nathan was currently in and walks in. She notices Nathan seated on a high chair next to the home bar with empty bottles of alcohol all over. Exhaling heavily, she draws in her lips for a quick bite before releasing it and walking over.

She sits down on the chair next to Nathan who had his head against the counter.

He raises it and looks at her.

"Hi," Hera says.

He shakes his head feeling groggy from the intoxication.

"Oh!" Nathan exclaims and hiccups.

Raising his finger, he points at her.

"It's my brothers ...no no no," He says waving his hands.

"He isn't my brother, my cousin? But he's my mother , my real mother's son so brother?" He says in thought.

"Have you heard? Lexis is both my brother and cousin," Nathan says laughing as he attempts to get up but staggers.

Hera rushes forward to help him but he jerks back his hand.

"My mother isn't actually my mother and my father isn't my father," He says using his hands to explain while trying to maintain his balance but failing as he teeters.

He grabs a bottle and noticing it's empty makes a disgusted face before flinging it at a chair by the side. He searches for one with contents in it and finally finds one picking it up, he takes a gulp.

Letting the alcohol slip from his hands pouring against the rug, he falls on the ground blacking out.

Sighing, Hera walks out and asks for Maeve's help in taking him to his room.

She then helps take off his shirt replacing it with a vest. After which she wipes his face with a washcloth before sitting down on the couch in the room quietly watching him sleep, falling asleep in the process.

The next morning at the break of dawn, she wakes up to a blanket wrapped around her. She glances at it confused not recalling covering herself with it the previous night. Remembering Nathan, she quickly looks up towards the bed to find it empty.

Throwing the blanket off her, she rushes up and glances around the empty room in search of him.

"Nathan," She calls out hurrying over to the door when she notices a silhouette by the side of the door in the balcony.

"Nathan?" She calls out walking towards the balcony.

"Morning," He says not turning back to look at her. A steaming cup of tea in his hands.

Hera furrows her brows as she walks over.

"Are you okay?" She asks.

"What, you thought I'd have killed myself?" He says half mockingly.

She doesn't answer. Her silence does.

"I'm not my parents Hera," He says to which Hera smiles and nods stretching her arms with her fingers interlocked in front of her.

She then walks towards the rails standing next to him with her back against the rails facing the room while his back was to the room.

"That's true, you're not," She says.

"How are you handling it?" She asks.

"How do you think I'm handling it?" He asks sneeringly.

They both stay silent.

"How's he?" He asks after a while.

"How do you think he is?" Hera replies throwing back his words at him to which Nathan chuckles shaking his head.

"I asked for that," He voices.

"That you did," Hera replies watching him with a smile.

"It's back," Hera says.

Raising an eyebrow, he turns around to face her.

"Your smile," She finishes.

"That's my line," Nathan says still smiling.

"You never trademarked it, I'm free to use it too," She says to which Nathan lets out a heavy sigh.

"Are you going to be okay?" Hera asks voice filled with concern.

"With time, probably. I'll survive," He answers.

Hera nods as he bends, sitting on the ground. She sits next to him.

They both stay silent each lost in their thought.

"Are you two okay now?" Nathan asks after a while.

She nods.

"That's good, at least one good thing has happened," He says to which Hera gives a comforting smile.

"Do you hate them?" She asks.

"Who? My parents? Or my uncle and aunt?"

"All of the above," Hera replies.

"I don't know, I'm mad but I can't hate someone that's dead. On Peter...I can only imagine how hard it must have been for him bringing up the son of his wife and brother. I don't know how he did it,"

"You know for years I could never understand why he treated me differently from Lexis. Not badly, just with caution. Almost as if he was never really sure how to treat me or act around me, so he let me fly unrestrained while Lexis was restrained. It was weird but now looking back at a lot of things with the new eyes of the things I now know, I get it," He says.

"Lea also never wronged me. She was truly a mother to me. The only one who they really wronged, whom we all wronged was Lexis, he's the real victim,"

"You are also a victim. A victim of our lies, if only they didn't try to stop you from getting to me when Lexis was unconscious, if only I told you the truth the day we met, if ..."

"Why didn't you?" He asks cutting her short as he turns to look at her.

"A mixture of things but mostly because I was scared, of losing him, of losing my daughter, of being rejected. I was insecure, scared and thought it was for the best that he doesn't remember the past, blaming myself for it. I just didn't know it was due to the drugs and not his pain,"

"You were also a victim," Nathan says.

"It seems we all were, victims of wrong choices," Hera says.

"You lost a child, were lied to, falsely accused and lost Lexis twice,"

"And my mother," Hera adds.

"Your mother?" He asks confused.

Hera goes on to explain what occurred with her mother.

"You never lost your mother Hera. You just lost the courage to face your hurtful words, thoughts and actions towards her," He says after having listened to the story.

She stays silent reflecting on his words and the truth in it.

"Be thankful you have a mother like yours, not all of us are afforded that luxury," He says to which Hera stays silent in thought as her eyes glisten.

"Also, I'm sorry for the hurtful words I said to you," He apologizes.

"So am I, I'm sorry I never told you the truth and cleared up your misunderstandings," Hera says to which he gives a half smile with sad eyes.

"I think it's time we all get the courage to face our mistakes,"

"Meaning?"

"Meaning I need to face the truth, Lexis, my family and you need to face yours. Deal?" He asks.

Hera stays quiet in thought before breaking into a smile.

"Deal," She says putting out her hands in a fist for a bump.

Chuckling, Nathan fist bumps her to which they both laugh.

"I missed you Nathan Black,"

"I missed you too partner,"

Hours later after spending time with Nathan, Hera heads back to the hospital with Maeve. Upon getting into the car she takes out her phone and stares at it for a while. After a couple of minutes, she unlocks it and scrolls down to a number before pausing.

Finally making a decision, she hits the number and the sound of the ringing tone fills her ears. The call is picked at the first ring.

"Mom? It's Hera," Hera says with an unstable voice.
