25. New Beginnings

Song: Cold Water - Major Lazer from Justin Bieber &Mo
Lol it should be hot water not cold...You'll get the reference later...

"There are two tragedies in life: one is to lose your heart's desire, the other is to gain it."  -- George Bernard Shaw

Brooke: "George Bernard Shaw once wrote; 'There are two tragedies in life: one is to lose your heart's desire, the other is to gain it.' Clearly, Shaw had his heart broken once or twice."

Nathan: "As far as I’m concerned, Shaw was a punk! 'Cause you know what? Tragedies happen. What're you gonna do, give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks, you gotta fight like hell to make sure you’re still alive. 'Cause you are, and that pain you feel: it's life. The confusion and fear.. that's there to remind you that somewhere out there is something better. And that something is worth fighting for."

Haley: "This year, I got everything I wanted and everything I wished for.. but, in a way, I lost even more" One Tree Hill.

Lexis stays quiet in thought watching Shakespeare eat or rather drink - considering it was melted - her ice cream when a thought crosses his mind.

"That makes no sense," He says.

Hera who is standing by the door glances at him.

"Did you name your daughter?" Lexis asks Hera.

"Why does that matter?" She asks.

"Because except you have a case of Stockholm syndrome it doesn't make sense that you'd name your daughter after an abusive husband," Lexis says.

"What?" Hera says flabbergasted.

"What are you talking about? Alexander was never abusive," Hera says.

"He wasn't?" Lexis asks.

"Of course he wasn't! What on earth would make you say or think of something so ridiculous?" She says.

Yes she wasn't ready to tell Alexander the truth but she couldn't allow Lexis' name to be soiled.

"Your scars," He says causing Shakespeare to look up towards her mum.

"My scars?" Hera says.

"I saw them the first day we met," He says.

"And from just that you assumed I was abused by Shakespeare's father?" Hera asks wondering how he could have come up with such a notion.

"Well your daughter did say you were coming to America to meet her dad but you don't seem to have any plans of meeting him hence I assumed you ran away from him but then again she said she hasn't seen him since she was born so I assumed you ran away upon finding out you were pregnant with her but then if you named her Alexandria after her dad it makes no sense that you were abused by him except you have a case of Stockholm syndrome the story doesn't add up," Lexis says.

"Shakespeare go play in your room," Hera says with a sharp tone.

"But mummy..." Shakespeare starts not wanting to leave and miss out on this discussion that she didn't fully understand but yet wanted to listen to.

"I said go to your room!" Hera says.

Shakespeare reluctantly gets up pouting and leaves the kitchen.

"Mr Alexander Black, firstly I don't appreciate you speaking of such things in front of my daughter. Secondly, I ask that you please refrain from making false assumptions, next thing I know you'll claim to be her father. Lastly Shakespeare's father never once laid his hands on me I'd appreciate it if you don't soil his name and memory with such a hideous and false notion," Hera says.

"He didn't?" Lexis asks.

"No he didn't!" Hera says both frustrated and irritated.

"Then why aren't you with him? Why does my being around you get you all riled up? " He asks.

"Need I remind you that until a few days back you were a stranger? Then I find out you're not only a billionaire but also the owner of the company I work at wouldn't it be more weird if I was comfortable around you? Especially after threatening to throw me behind bars and publicly embarrassing me?" Hera asks.

"True," Lexis says leaning back.

"So you really don't know me?" He asks.

Hera pauses, was she really willing to tell more lies? The more lies she told the harder it'll be to get out of.

"Why are you so adamant to know if I knew you? How does it add to your life?" Hera asks deciding if he had some memories of her or wished to remember her she'd tell the truth.

Lexis traces his lips leaning back.

"Because of a girl," Lexis says.

"A girl?" Hera asks.

"I hear she was madly in love with me and was willing to do anything for me. She was there for me during the hard times and helped me get out of my shell. When I lost all hope in the world and myself, she was there by my side holding my hands. She picked me up and stood by me. She's the only one who remembers our past, I wish I could remember how we were, If you know more about the two of us then I'd love to know," He says.

Hera smiles as her heart swells up in joy. Did someone tell him? She had so many questions she wasn't sure where to start.

"They told you..." She starts as the sound of a phone ringing breaks out.

Lexis looks at it.

" ...about two of..." Hera continues but is cut of by Lexis' saying.

"She just called,"

"What?" Hera asks confused.

"The girl whom I wish I could remember, my fiancee Karen, excuse me," He says as he answers the phone causing the atom of hope Hera held in her heart to come crashing down. As she struggles to keep her body standing straight.

"Karen," Lexis says.

Hera feels the knife pressed to her heart further twisted.

"Good," Lexis says asking, "Is Reid back?"

Hera's eyes look up to Lexis at the name.

Hera stays still half wanting to leave and spare herself the torture of listening to him talk to his fiancee and half wanting to stay and listen even if it hurt her as it'd give her the strength to really leave their past in the past.

"The wedding is in a few weeks he'll call," Lexis says.

Hera walks towards the cabinet ignoring the pain in her hand. She had been so scared of losing Shakespeare when she woke up her fear had numbed her from feeling the pain but suddenly hearing Lexis' conversation her body seems to have awoken to the pain of having to carry Shakespeare in her arms all night. She turns on the kettle.

How could she have been so stupid to think it was her? To think they could return to how they were? He had a new life, a fiancee, an upcoming wedding, a happy life that didn't need her in it. She almost made an irrevocable mistake.

"I've finalized details with Maeve on the venue, we're still finalizing the press details," He says and stays quiet listening in.

Hera Reynolds, She says to herself shutting her eyes, your Alexander died five years ago and is never returning.

"I spoke to him last night, he's on track. I do believe he should be able to get at least five more on our side," Lexis says.

He listens in some more.

"The reception?" Lexis asks.

Stop holding unto false hopes and truly let go, you came to America to let go, now you know he's alive and living well do you really want to destroy the life he's worked so hard to build this five years? She'd caused him enough pain that almost lead to his death bringing back his traumatic past making him relive the memories is something only someone heartless could do.

"The beach house? I haven't been there yet I'll send Maeve to do so," He says listening in some more.

"Okay," Lexis says cutting the call and turning to face Hera.

"So where were we?" Lexis asks.

Hera shuts her eyes drawing in her lower lip and releasing it.

"He died five years ago Hera" She whispers to herself and opens her eyes, her back facing Lexis.

"I knew an Alexander years ago, a man who loved me and gave me everything, gave me his world, a man who unlike you read into my scars accurately who instead of making false assumptions used his brains to find out the truth, who taught me to trust him, who fought for me and saved me but that Alexander I lost years ago when  I learnt he passed away, and that Alexander is definitely not the man standing before me today I hope that answers your questions and makes you leave my daughter and I alone," Hera says as the water she's boiling turns off.

Hera quickly picks a cup and raises the kettle up to pour the water and quickly leave the kitchen but the pain in her hands cause her to lose her hold on the kettle causing the kettle to fall and the hot water to pour on her hand, clothes and legs the rest spilling on the ground before she can escape as she cries out in pain.

"Fuck!" Lexis says rushing towards her.

"Don't," Hera cries out but he ignores her and steps on the hot water bearing the pain as he quickly scoops her up and rushes out of the kitchen just as the nurse rushes towards him.

"What's wrong?" The nurse asks looking around for a sign.

"She got burnt by hot water," Lexis says hurrying towards the room.

The nurse helps him open the door.

"She needs to have her hands run through cold water," The nurse says.

"It's not just her hands," Lexis says.

"I'll call 911," The nurse replies.

"No," Hera says she didn't have insurance as she hadn't planned on returning to America. The cost of getting an ambulance and being treated at a hospital was a luxury she couldn't afford.

"Aren't you a nurse?" Lexis asks getting irritated at the seemingly incompetent nurse.

"Yes but you said..." The nurse starts but gets cut off by Lexis who asks.

"What else can we do?" Lexis asks the nurse.

"Do you have a bath tub?" The nurse asks.

Hera points to a door at the far right.

Lexis hurries over, the nurse opens the door and turns on the tap sealing the drain.

"I'll help with her clothes," The nurse says moving to take off Hera's clothes. Hera cries out in pain from not just the burn but her left hand that had carried Shakespeare all night.

"Are you okay? Is this hand also burnt?" The nurse asks searching for signs of a burn but finding none.

"Your hand hurts?" Lexis asks.

Hera nods in tears.

Lexis remembers how she had carried her daughter in her arms all night.

"Be careful with her left hand I believe it's numb," Lexis says.

The nurse nods and gently removes the clothing.

Lexis then walks over wrapping his arms around Hera.

Hera moves as if trying to get out of his hands.

"Stay still lest you worsen your pain, plus it's not my first time seeing or carrying your naked body," He says causing the nurse to turn red.

He walks to the tub and places Hera in. She shivers at the contact of the cold water with her skin.

"How long does she need to be in there?" Lexis asks.

"At least 10 minutes preferably 20 after which I'll look at it to see how badly she's burnt," The nurse says.

Lexis sits by the the rim and raises her left hand slowly.

"Bear with me" He says as he slowly raises it up and down and sideways.

"Do you have any ice packs or heat sprays?" He asks the nurse who shakes her head.

"Mummy?" Shakespeare's voice rings out from the room.

Hera tries to get up but Lexis holds her down.

"Don't let the kid come in," Lexis says.

The nurse nods and walks out.

"Surely you don't want your daughter seeing you in this state?" Lexis says.

Hera bites her lips to keep from wailing loudly and drawing the attention of her daughter to the bathroom, She bends her head down sobbing.

"You'll get a crick in your neck," Lexis says raising her head and placing it against his legs allowing her to cry on his pants.

He stays silent listening to her wail as she slowly stops crying staying silent with her head against his legs as she releases her lips.

"I shouldn't have assumed, I apologize," Lexis says after a while.

Hera stays silent.

He lets out a deep breath.

"I'm sorry," Hera says.

"For what?" He asks.

For lying, for breaking up with you, for causing you to lose your memories, for almost causing your death Hera thinks but instead says.

"For snapping at you countless times and thank you," She says.

Lexis smirks.

"For what?" He asks.

Finding me, loving me, teaching me to love myself, for giving me Shakespeare, for being alive and happy she thinks but says,

"For helping with the burn, and the ice cream," She says.

He chuckles and strokes her hair.

"I should have waited a few hours," He says.

"For what?" Hera asks confused.

"The answer to your scars, you answered that yourself by getting burnt," He says earning a bite to his lap from Hera.

"Ouch! The hell was that for?!" Lexis asks.

"Jumping to conclusions," Hera says earning a light chuckle from him.

"Want to start over?" He asks.

"Start over?" Hera replies confused.

Lexis raises her head from his lap holding her face in his hands.

"Hi, my name is Alexander Black, heir to Black Industries," He says.

Hera pauses, new beginnings, she wasn't worthy of it yet...she smiles sadly.

"Hera Reynolds, a sales person at Mixx and also a mom to the most gorgeous little girl named Shakespeare," She replies with misty eyes.
