Prologue: Maxine
I came home from school and threw my stuff on the ground, then went into the kitchen for my afterschool snack.
I looked in the fridge and found some chocolate chip waffles in a plastic container, then brought them to the table and started eating.
I had arrived on my bike and the five-mile ride had made me hungry. The waffles were just the thing to make me feel better. Most high-schoolers, like me, have cars, but I have no use for mine now that gasoline is so scarce.

That night, my mother came home very late. When I asked her what happened, she said that her car ran out of gasoline, and she had to get it towed. All of the gas stations close to her were out of gasoline, and she had to take the bus home.
That's what happens when the world is running out of fossil fuels. Coal was already gone about ten years ago, then five years ago we ran out of natural gas, and now the petroleum is slowly going away.
I don't know what's in store for the world at this point. Our main energy sources are pretty much gone, and there's nothing we can do to change that.
That night, I ate a relatively normal dinner with my relatively normal family and went to sleep, like I did every day in my relatively normal world.
Little did I know, that was the last normal day of my life.
