Racing for bragging rights
This weekend has a lot on the line. Some small, some big. From wanting to win in someone's honor, winning at home, wanting another trophy, and dare I say, possibly getting revenge. Formula One heads over to Belgium, the NASCAR Xfinity Series goes to Road America, where it's been recently repaved. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series goes to Richmond to officially confirm their 10 drivers that will be in the playoffs and compete for a championship. Finally, the Cup Series follows up where the Trucks left off as they continue to count down races before their playoffs begin. 1st, let's begin with the Saturday show!
Xfinity predicted winner: AJ Allmendinger
Shocking for some, but AJ Allmendinger is doing double duty this weekend, which in the late 2000s was common for Cup drivers. Back then, there was something to gain, like points and possibly an Xfinity championship. Since 2011, drivers have had to pledge their points to one series. Allmendinger is a full-time Cup driver who is 17th in points 17 points behind the cutline to make the playoffs so why would he not practice or qualify the Cup car? Having fun racing road courses, believing as long at the setup is right at Richmond that he'd move forward, and possibly keeping his road course skills updated to possibly win hus way in the Cup playoffs at Indianapolis or Watkins Glen in a few weeks.
Trucks predicted winner: Ty Majeski
Since joining ThorSport, Ty Majeski has quietly improved to become one of the lead drivers in that organization. Still in a 3-way tie for 3rd in points heading into the regular season finale, 2nd place in the regular season is not out of the question either. A win could gain Majeski a lot of playoff points that could get him back to Phoenix to contend for a championship. The last time ThorSport raced Fords at Richmond was in 2020, where they finished 1-2-3.
F1 predicted podium:
1st Max Verstappen
Spa has been in the headlines lately and not for good reasons. In 2019, Charles Leclerc won in honor of his fallen friend Anthoine Hubert. This year, Max Verstappen will win in honor of his fallen compatriot Dilano van't Hoff.
2nd Sergio Perez
He started to regain his confidence after falling so far off his teammate in the points. Red Bull used to be known for having more downforce built in their car. Now, with a powerful engine, they can look forward to Belgium with confidence, knowing they can get a 1-2.
3rd Oscar Piastri
For the last 2 races, Oscar Piastri has had podium worthy drives but has just missed out. To think he was in the news last year for leaving Alpine after the team announced he'd be driving for them. Looks like it's only a matter of time that he claims his 1st career podium for McLaren, just like Lando Norris has accomplished in the previous 2 races.
Cup predicted winner: Kyle Larson
Never would have thought that Larson would become a strong short track racer in 2023, but his 2 wins and All-Star win came on short tracks. Richmond in the spring, Martinsville, and North Wilkesboro. This weekend, he has motivation and possibly a score to settle with his good friend Denny Hamlin. Kyle was not a happy camper with the way Denny raced him at Pocono, feeling like he just used him up and damaged his car. While Hamlin won the race, Larson finished 20th. While the 2021 Cup champion does not appear to be a person to just deliberately wreck someone, he has said he is going to race Hamlin differently. While not letting racing destroy their friendship, both sides agree that they are not going to go down a similar road to the Busch brothers in 2007 where they didn't speak to each other for months. Both are great drivers at the top of their game. The best way Larson can get Denny back is to sweep at his home track. A cherry on top since Kyle's birthday is the following Monday.
