Mega weekend at Martinsville and Mexico
This weekend has NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series travel to Martinsville to decide who will be fighting for their respective championships at Phoenix next week, and F1 goes to Mexico! So, with all the hype around some of motorsports' favorite places to go, who will win at these prestigious tracks?
Xfinity predicted winner: Sammy Smith
So Sammy Smith may be in his rookie season, but he has a high ceiling to reach. One of his strengths has been short tracks. Before Sammy became a full-time Xfinity racer, he was running up front, contending for the win. Sammy did finish 2nd at the spring race in Martinsville. So, with him getting his 1st career pole, it could set him up to win and fight for a championship before heading to JR Motorsports in 2024.
Cup predicted winner: Ryan Blaney
Sometimes you are lucky and good. Blaney has advanced further in the playoffs than people thought he would. Ryan got to the round of 8, and after Las Vegas, he looked in a tough spot until he got disqualified for shock infringements. But however NASCAR gave them their points back after their equipment they used to check the cars was faulty. Now, after Homestead, he heads into Martinsville 10 points above the cutline. He has strong speed at Martinsville and will have a lot of tough competition behind him needing to win, but Blaney can make his first championship 4 appearance if he and his team don't beat themselves.
F1 predicted podium:
1st Max Verstappen
Rising quickly up the all-time wins list is Max Verstappen. That won't change going to Mexico where he has won 3 previous times, including the last 2 years.
2nd Sergio Perez
A massive rough patch has seen Perez under threat of losing 2nd place in the drivers standings. Having a teammate who is literally winning almost everything can be disheartening, but he comes home to enjoy racing at Mexico City. A podium will do wonders for his country and his own confidence.
3rd Lando Norris
It is starting to look like 2021 again with Lando Norris fighting for podiums regularly. He is one podium away from matching Nick Heidfeld's record for most podiums without a win. Norris even joked at how Nico Rosberg retired after winning his championship in 2016 that he would retire after scoring his 1st win. That time is coming, but a podium will continue McLaren building momentum.
