Sometimes I think I could have been a good music critic.  But then I remember how "weird" a lot of the music I like is and I have to re-think that proposition.  It's not that I think the music I like sucks or why would I like it?  It's just I don't think I'd be a reliable indicator of what the average person might like, because I seem to be really out of step with the average person.  For instance I would probably give the majority of top 40 pop music at best a half a star out of five because I think the vast majority of it is unmitigated crap.  But a lot of people must really like it or it wouldn't rank as top 40.  Are all those people wrong?  I certainly think so, but since they make up the majority of listeners and music is inherently subjective, that's not really true.  In the end you like what you like.  I would just be a terrible guide for people who like stuff like that because I hate all of it and thus couldn't give them recommendations that would suit their tastes.

On the other hand I would be tempted to give 5 stars to an album like Pure Guava by Ween, which I know is going to be an off-putting listen to a lot of people.  It's weird and noisy and abrasive and often obnoxious and I would expect most people to think I'm crazy for recommending it.  I'm not even sure I would recommend it unless I knew the prospective listener was into stuff similar to it.  I really genuinely enjoy it, but I can honestly say I didn't get it or even like it when I first heard it.  It took some time and context for me to jibe with it.  Once I did, I thought it was amazing, but up to that point it could be a chore to listen to and I wouldn't expect the average listener to want to put that kind of work in or that they would even necessarily get the same rewards out of it that I eventually did.

Admittedly, that's a fairly extreme example.  I believe I could assemble a playlist of Ween songs that most people could enjoy and I think I could point people towards some songs or albums by a wide range of artists that wouldn't be too difficult for most people to like, but at the end of the day I think as a whole critics are only useful to the extent that you share tastes with them.  Broadly speaking metal music should probably be reviewed by critics who are knowledgeable about and enjoy metal music.  Same with rap or pop or country.  By the same token all those genres are probably wide ranging enough that you might not even share tastes with someone who is into the same type of music as you.

Don't take critics as absolute authorities.  Just look at them as enthusiasts like you and try to find ones that mostly align with your taste.  And even then you don't have to agree with them all the time.  Like what you like!  Don't like what you don't like!  That's why it's called taste.
