Well, it's about the middle of the month so I guess I should carry on the tradition I've established of finding out where the names of months came from. While it does feel a little silly to keep it up since I think I've already firmly established how September-December got their names, there's also only two months left in the year, so I figure I may as well see it through to the end.
So anyway, based on what I've previously learned I can say with a high degree of confidence that November is thusly named because it was originally the ninth month of the year and Nov- is probably a Latin prefix meaning nine. After July and August were installed as the seventh and eighth months, November got booted to the eleventh position, and despite attempts of other Roman Emperors to re-name it after themselves, the name November somehow stuck.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that pretty much covers it, but just to be sure there aren't any interesting details I'm overlooking, I'm going to go look it up right now. Be right back...
So yeah, I couldn't find any other tidbits of info except to confirm that "novem" is indeed the Latin word for nine. So there you go.
