I sincerely don't get how so many people can walk around thinking they're right about everything all the time.  Every opinion or take they have is the 100% correct one in their mind.  That just strikes me as arrogant beyond belief.  Nobody's right all the time.  You can't know everything about everything and learning stuff and changing the way you think is how you grow as a person.

I'll share a story about a time I realized I was completely wrong about something.  I was in a band probably around 20 years ago and I was talking to my bandmates about some other band that was getting some hype mostly due to the fact that they had a celebrity as a member.  I don't remember exactly who the band or celebrity was other than the celebrity in question played the drums.  I made some comment to the effect of "I don't know why they're hyping the celebrity's involvement so much.  He's just the drummer."  I said this in front of my drummer.  I realized as soon as it came out of my mouth how insulting that sounded.  He rightly called me out on it and pointed out that I had this general attitude that drums were lesser than other parts of a band and weren't real musicians.

I reflected on what he said and realized he was right.  I had always been coming from the standpoint that a good melody and maybe good guitar riffs or something was what made a good song and drums always seemed kind of secondary to me.  But drums are an important aspect of a song.  After all, music isn't just melody.  It's also rhythm.  Rhythm is an extremely important component of music.  You don't really have music if you don't have it.  And a good drummer can bring a lot of creativity and musicality to a song.

Instead of arguing or trying to pretend that I did properly value drums, I took the opportunity to learn and grow.  I'm honestly glad it happened because otherwise I might have continued on feeling the same way.  Instead I've taken the time to pay more attention to drums and appreciate what they're doing, and in turn I think I have a fuller appreciation of music.  I was most definitely not right in that situation and admitting to it and working on it led to a better place for me personally.  That's the thing, you can benefit yourself by admitting the error of your ways.  Being stubborn and holding fast in the face of all evidence isn't just kind of a waste of time, it can also make your world a smaller place.  Embrace the fact that you don't know everything and you can have opinions and attitudes that are wrong.  It's okay.  We're all only human after all.
