Slugs are kind of like snails without shells.  It would be weird if there were other creatures like that.  Like turtles without shells.  Or on the other hand, traditionally non-shelled creatures that would suddenly have shelled counterparts.  Could you imagine donkeys with shells?  Or elephants with shells?  Or water buffalos with shells?  

Yeah.  That would be weird.
