When I was in college I used to really enjoy getting into debates or arguments with people. Not in a nasty way. Mostly it was among my friends. We could engage in some pretty intense conversations and then at the end of it there were no hard feelings and everyone got along fine afterward. I would sometimes play the Devil's advocate and take up positions I didn't necessarily believe just for the joy of arguing.
Nowadays I don't enjoy arguing with people at all. The internet and especially social media have drained all the fun out of it for me. It's a shame because I do think a little bit of friendly productive debate is good for you. It causes you to think critically. You have to listen and respond to what the other person is saying and you have to be able to defend your own positions.
I also think it's good to get exposed to ideas that fall outside your comfort zone sometimes. If you stay in a bubble and your worldview is constantly confirmed then you never have a chance to evolve or grow. It's good to hear differing opinions and consider them because you can either come up with a stronger more rational reason why you disagree with them or, perhaps, you might just change your mind and think differently. And there's nothing wrong with that. Nobody's born knowing everything and it's honestly a good thing to evaluate your own beliefs and opinions sometimes and possibly change them.
But all of the positives that come from arguing comes with the assumption that arguments are being made in good faith and are being intelligently articulated. My experiences in the post-social media world suggest that this isn't the case anymore at all. Arguing is only useful if there's a chance one side or the other might be persuaded. When both sides are completely dug in and there's no possibility of change, you may as well argue with a brick wall. Plus you can't really learn anything from the other side when all you're being met with are misinformation, stupidity, and a list of talking points. And what's worse you might not even be arguing with a real person online. It might be a Russian bot. Or at the very least some bored 12 year old kid who's just looking to stir up trouble and piss people off. It's totally pointless.
I do sometimes miss the old days when I enjoyed a good debate, but as of now I want nothing to do with it and it's kind of sad. Nowadays if I hear some idiot spewing nonsense I just disengage. All I'm going to do is waste time and make myself angry and it's just not worth it.
