I watched the movie Gandhi last night. I saw it many years ago and remember really liking it the first time, but it's been long enough that it was almost like seeing it for the first time again. Gandhi was for sure an inspiration and we really could use more people like him. But I get that it isn't easy to do what he did. His message of nonviolent resistance is on point and the scale at which he was able to get people to buy into it is incredible.
I truly do believe that nonviolence is the way forward if the human race is ever going to solve its problems. But it's a tough ask. Violence is a quick and easy response to things we don't like. It's often impulsive and based in emotion. Plus if someone does violence to you, it often makes you want to do violence back to them. But as we've seen continuously throughout human history that never really resolves things. It just creates escalating conflict and sometimes breeds generations of ill will. Or perhaps one side completely eradicates the other and that's not good either.
I'm honestly really skeptical about humanity and often feel pessimistic about our long-term fate. But the fact that people like Gandhi can come along sometimes and actually have an impact on the world does give me some glimmer of hope. I want the best for humanity, but I often fear the worst. It's possible we could reach our fullest and greatest potential, but it isn't going to be easy. That's for sure.
