So I've started a three month and counting tradition of learning how the months got their names and now that we're smack in the middle of April, it seems like a good time to find out. I sort of had an inkling of a clue about March, although it was more involved than I realized. I have no idea when it comes to April, so give me a moment to pull out the old google and I'll report back on what I find...
Huh. This is an interesting one. Apparently it's not definitively known how April got its name. There do seem to be a few theories. The most popular seems to be that the original Latin name Aprilis was derived from the Latin word aperire, which means to open and could be a reference to the fact that a lot of plants tend to bloom around April. Another theory I saw is that it could be a reference to Aphrodite, which would make a certain level of sense considering a lot of the other months seemed to be named after gods.
And then another interesting factoid I read was that apparently in the 5th century, Anglo-
Saxons referred to April as Eostre-monath, a reference to the goddess Eostre whose festival was held during the month and is probably where the modern name of Easter came from.
So I don't have a definitive answer on this one, but nonetheless this little project has proven quite interesting. It's fun to learn stuff.
