A lot of politicians sure are hypocrites. It's one of the most maddening things about politicians. That, and their refusal to just answer a direct question. They've always got to duck and dodge and return to their talking points and it's really irritating. Why do we need politicians anyway? They suck.
I can't say for 100% sure that I've never, ever been a hypocrite in my life, but I try not to be. I do think it's possible, and indeed quite natural to hold contradicting opinions sometimes and not be a hypocrite. That's part of being a human. Life is complex and everything doesn't always fall into neat little boxes. You can be in favor of things in certain circumstances and against them in others. Or you can feel conflicted about something. All of that is natural.
For example, when I think of people in general, I want good things for them. I don't want anyone to have to suffer and in general I hope everyone has a good day. But at the same time, there's a lot of times I don't want to deal with people, I'm sick of their b.s. and I just want to be left alone. I can feel both ways at the same time.
I also think it's okay and probably healthy to change your mind once in a while. You can evolve your opinions without being a hypocrite. You can even do it without being wishy-washy or a flip-flopper. I think those last two only come into play if you won't commit to something. But again, even that I don't think is always so bad. Like I said, it's natural to feel conflicted about things. It's okay to be undecided about stuff once in a while. Where I think flip-flopping begins to creep into hypocritical territory is when you change your opinions merely to fulfill your own advantage. My guy is in office so I'm for this thing, but once your guy takes office I'll be against it even though it's literally the exact same thing. That's hypocritical.
Ultimately I think the height of hypocrisy, and this is the box that many politicians tick, is when you hold others to standards that you don't adhere to yourself. If I call you a lazy bum because you're unemployed, but I'm not working either, that's hypocritical.
It can be a fine distinction for sure, but hypocrisy always sucks. Just like politicians. Seriously, can we just, like, not have any politicians? Let's send them all off to their own little remote island somewhere and let them speechify to each other and the rest of us can just get on in peace.
