I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but whenever I drive down the freeway here I can't help but notice like ninety percent of the billboards along it are advertisements for personal injury attorneys. Either we've got a lot of bad drivers around here or people are just really litigious. I suspect it's a bit of both, but sadly more the latter.
I'm not saying it wouldn't suck to get injured in a car accident. It would. But people are getting in extremely mild fender benders and then think they're entitled to a million dollars because they got rear-ended. I don't know why we're so up-in-arms to determine who's at fault in accidents either and why they should get sued for getting into one. I mean, they're called "accidents" not "on purposes." In most cases I'm pretty sure nobody was intentionally trying to hit your car.
Sure, there are cases of extreme negligence while driving, such as being plastered or all cracked out or something, but I feel like there are other punishments already in place for things like that. As for a run-of-the-mill honest to goodness accident, I don't think you should be at risk of getting sued for everything you own just because you maybe got distracted for half a second at the wrong time.
As for if you get a lot of expensive medical bills from your injuries, it seems to me the problem is medical bills shouldn't be so freaking expensive. And isn't this part of what we're supposed to have insurance for? Can't they pay for it?
Plus, it seems like every personal injury attorney comes across as the biggest slimeball on the planet, and I bet you they probably are. Profiting off of other people's misfortunes is always the sign of some high moral character.
