As much as I'd like to believe I'm immune to the effects of advertising, there's no doubt that it works.  They wouldn't spend so much money on it if it didn't, but case in point I can remember advertising jingles and slogans from thirty years ago.  There are lots of fun times I've had with friends I can't remember at all, but I'll be damned if I'll ever forget the "Break me off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar" song.   I'll be singing that and others like it when I'm in the nursing home.  It's insidious how they implant these little earworms in your brain.  And it doesn't have to be a song either.  Sometimes a catchy little phrase is enough to do the trick.

It works to get your money out of you too.  It's all about brand awareness and you're way more likely to buy something you've heard of than something you haven't.  And maybe that Kit-Kat commercial plants the idea in your head that you could go for one even if you aren't consciously thinking about it.

I try to watch as few ads as possible nowadays, but it's impossible to avoid them entirely.  They don't just come at you on the television anymore anyway.  They pop up online all the time and the part that freaks me out the most is when I'm talking about something and they start advertising that thing to me on Facebook or whatever.  I really hate that.  They're definitely listening in on us.

Or I literally just bought something and then they start relentlessly advertising the thing that I bought to me.  I don't really understand the logic behind that one.  I just bought it, so why does it need to be advertised to me?  Do they think I need to immediately buy another one?  And if I do, I might rush to one of their competitors?

Anyway, in conclusion, advertisements are highly effective, but they still suck.
