Well, it's getting to be that time of year again.  Tax season.  Yay!  I so look forward to this each year.  I'm thinking about maybe doing them today.  That is, if I don't find a way to procrastinate.  

There are a lot of things about being a grown up that are not awesome and taxes definitely make that list.  I do miss the days when I didn't worry about them whatsoever.  But those days are long gone.  I don't think anyone especially likes taxes.  It's not enjoyable to pay them in the first place, and then having to do a mandatory report about them each year is kind of adding insult to injury.  A lot of super rich people hate taxes so much that they buy off politicians so they don't have to pay any taxes.  That must be nice.  Except for the fact that it's super scummy, increases inequality, and is a big part of what's wrong with the world.

Should we even have taxes?  I get that they do go towards important things that everyone uses like maintaining the roads and whatnot.  Who would pay for that if we didn't have taxes?  Would you be charged a fee every time you went out driving?  I'm okay with paying some taxes to take care of things like that.  I also wouldn't mind paying a little extra in taxes if I knew it meant all of my potential medical expenses would be covered, but we can't have that in America because wanting to not have to worry about being bankrupted if you get sick is apparently socialism and that's evil. 

Taxes also go to other things, though, that I'm not so cool with like paying for wars, or even worse, paying gigantic corporations vast sums of money to manufacture weapons for wars.  And then those same corporations turn around and don't pay any taxes.  

But the real fact is we're largely left in the dark as to exactly how our tax dollars are spent.  I wish there was a little more transparency to it and I also wish we had a little more say in how our tax dollars are spent.  But I may as well wish for a pet unicorn, because that's probably more likely to happen.
