So I've sort of started a tradition the last couple of months of learning where the names of the month I'm in came from. I've already learned about January and February, so now it's time for March. I think I might know this one actually. I think it comes from Mars, the Roman god of war. But I'm not 100% sure and even if I'm right I don't totally know the reasoning why it was chosen for this particular time of year. So I'm going to pause right here and go look it up.
Okay, I'm back and I've learned a couple things, although I still have a couple questions. I was correct about it being named after Mars, although the Romans originally called the month Martius. Somehow we changed that to March and I didn't see an explanation of how that came to be. When I was reading about the Ides of March a few days ago I learned that March used to be the first month of the year and I learned a little bit more about that right now. Apparently the Romans originally only named 10 months and considered the winter a "dead" period when the government and military weren't active and basically nothing happened. Thus what we now know as January and February weren't even given names and March was the beginning of the new year. It also marked the resumption of active military campaigns and that's why it was named after the god of war.
Interesting stuff. I totally did not know that. I still want to know how we changed Martius to March and maybe if I dig a little deeper I could find that info, but for now I'm happy about learning something new.
