You know how the stereotypical pirate is missing body parts?  Pirating must be a dangerous job.  I wonder if sometimes it's the missing body parts themselves that cause further injury.  Like maybe the pirate loses his hand in some sort of unfortunate accident.  So now he's got a hook for a hand, but he's not really used to it yet and one day his eye is itching so he goes to scratch it, but accidently gouges it out with his hook.  Now that he can't see as well because he's got an eyepatch on maybe he doesn't look where he's going and he steps in a pile of angry beavers and they chew his leg off and the next thing you know he's got a peg leg.  And then maybe he's not super used to walking on it, so he trips and stumbles, puts his hands out to catch his fall, but he lands in a vat of acid and melts his other hand off and now he's got two hooks for hands.  And so on and so forth.
