I don't really get fashion as a concept.  I mean, I understand it's a thing that exists, but I don't really know how or why.  It's like we just collectively decide some clothes and hairstyles look good for a while, and then we decide that they don't anymore.  I do understand wanting to change things up once in a while, but fashion just seems really arbitrary.  There's no science behind it that I can tell.  For a little while in the 80's we all just decided that really big bangs and bright neon colors looked awesome.  Then we were like no they don't.  Never mind.

Some people take fashion really seriously though.  It's like a big business with huge money involved.  But whenever I see footage of some cutting edge fashion show, it seems like the models are always wearing these crazy dresses that I can't imagine anyone would actually wear in real life.  Like dresses covered in mirrors or with big cardboard boxes for sleeves.  I guess you never know what sort of fashion is going to take off so they just have to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.

One thing that seems to have never really gone out of fashion and I really don't get is neckties.  They serve absolutely no function, but for some reason we've decided a strip of cloth dangling off our necks looks good.  Not just good, but "dressed up."  For that matter, I don't get bowties, cummerbunds, or really any aspect of men's formal wear.  People say it's fancy and looks good and I guess I agree because everyone always says so.  But why, damn it?  I don't understand.
