5 Good Starter Anime

These shows that I've picked are good for beginners and aren't in any particular order. Nothing too crazy or emotionally stressing heh. But just enough to give you a taste of what you're in for. Typically anime episodes last for 22 minutes and there are about 12-25 episodes per season.

#1

Name (Japanese and English): Nichijou (My Ordinary Life)
Genre: Slice of life, Comedy, School
Seasons: 1 (26 episodes)
Studio: Kyoto Animation
My rating (out of 10): 9/10

Summary: Remember when I said I wouldn't start with crazy shows...let's just say My Ordinary Life is an ironic name. This show will basically fill you in on how anime works because it has to do with these shorts of two lives: one of three schoolgirls and one of an underage professor and her robot creation who strives to have a normal life. What makes this show so crazy is with the characters over the top reactions and random comedy. Literally, in one scene they could be eating lunch, then in the next wrestling a deer...it's just how Nichijou works. Even though you might not get some of the humor in this show and be confused by the randomness I still think this show is a great starter and a great representation of anime as a whole.

#2

Name: Akagami no Shiriyuki-Hime (Snow White with the Red Hair)
Genre: Romance, Drama, Adventure
Seasons: 2 (24 episodes)
Studio: Bones
My rating: 9/10

Now just if you didn't read above, this is a romance. There's gonna be some lovey dovey stuff in this show. It is not only about romance though. This is a show about when a not so traditional prince falls in love with a middle-class herbalist that has an unusually rare color of hair. Problems with social class, government affairs, and threats to the throne are things that stir up the drama in this show. Not to mention having a strong female lead! Nevertheless, it still ends up being pretty light-hearted and a nice little series to pick up.

#3

Name: One Punch Man
Genre: Action, Superpower, Parody
Seasons: 1 (12 episodes)
Studio: Madhouse
My rating: 10/10

If you're a superhero fan (I know I am!), then this next pick is right up your alley. One Punch Man is about a regular guy named Saitama who trains to become a hero. Thing is though he trained so hard that every battle he fights end with a single one of his punches. He one day strives to find a worthy opponent but until then he just lives a normal old life...until he meets a certain determined cyborg who asks for his guidance on becoming a hero. Saitama is just a funny character to watch and its entertaining to see how he reacts to situations. This anime is one of the darker shows out there, but it changes to comedy in the blink of an eye. With over the top action, a big cast of unique heroes and villains, and an awesome theme song, you can't go wrong with One Punch. (Can't wait for season 2!!)

#4

Name: Clannad
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama, School
Seasons: 2 (47 episodes)
Studio: Kyoto Animation
My rating: 9/10

This show was actually one that I've recently finished. I so wish I had seen it sooner because it would have been a great starter. So that's why I am sharing it with you people! Clannad basically circles around the unlikely romance between the two main characters: the delinquent Tomoya and the sweet yet shy Nagisa. Though both come from very different backgrounds, they form a great friendship that eventually turns into something more. Throw in a crazy wingman, a love triangle (well technically love square), a lot of cuteness and you got Clannad. Although I do believe they exaggerate a bit much with the drama, I still enjoyed the series very much. And apparently, the sequel is even better so I'm gonna check that out soon!

Stop messing with my emotions, Clannad!

#5

Name: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)
Genre: Drama, Music, Romance
Seasons: 1 (22 episodes)
Studio: A-1 Pictures
My rating: 10/10

Your Lie in April was just beautiful. From the great instrumental music to the colorful art to the heart touching drama, it was a big surprise for me. This follows the story of Kosei who because of a traumatic experience thought he would give up playing the piano forever. However one day he saw a graceful girl playing her heart out, glowing in the sunshine, with cherry blossom petals drifting about; this girl lit up Kosei's world. And the more he got to know her, the more motivated he got to get back into playing. This show was kind of different from the rest because it never really felt like anime. It just goes to show not only how big of an impact music can have but also meeting that one special person that can change your whole perspective on life.

Best. Duet. Ever:

So this is my first 5 anime recommendations! We aren't done though because there are plenty of other shows that are worth your while! Be on the lookout for the next update where I will start the "If you like..." recommendations.
