Chapter 1: Coming home
Kattegat. Hedvig missed this place with her whole heart, but she didn't realize it until she set foot on its soil again. Her journey was tiring and she was glad to be home again, because after everything Kattegat was still her real home. After years of being away, Kattegat was nothing like she could remember. The streets were bustling, people were everywhere, Hedvig was used to the calm town that she grew up in.
Ragnar had a plan, she could tell it from the determination in his eyes. During the years they traveled together, Hedvig started know his every expression, but she still couldn't catch his train of thoughts most of the time.
"Dear Hedvig" he started as soon as they set foot in Kattegat, Hedvig looked up at him curiously, waiting for him to continue "This is an ending, but also a beginning of a new journey."
Hedvig was still waiting for something more, but that was all what he wanted to say. She mused over his words, yes indeed it was something new and unknown.
Ragnar's excitement get the better of him and he quickened his steps, Hedvig had to hurry after him, as they made their way through Kattegat. More and more people occupied the streets as they neared the Great Hall.
"It's Ragnar" "Ragnar is back" whispers followed in their steps. The news of their arrival were ahead of them when they get to the clearing in front of the Great Hall. A crowd gathered around them.
"Let us pass." "Move." There they were, the Ragnarssons, making their way through the crowd. Hedvig didn't see them in years, they grew up, but she would have recognize them anywhere.
"Hello, Ivar." Ragnar greeted his youngest son. He took a deep breath before continuing "It appears my return is not welcome. You've obviously all made your mind up about me. I cannot blame you for that." Nobody said anything, Hedvig didn't know where he was going with this and it scared her. Ragnar sighed before going on. "So. Well, boys, who is going to do it, then? Who's going to kill me?" He was rallying his sons to kill him. Hedvig wanted to stop him, but she didn't dare disturb him when she saw the look in his eyes. Pure insanity. Never before did she see him like that.
"Put me out of my misery. Do it. Do it. Do it, do it." Ragnar shouted louder and louder "Do it!" After nobody fulfiled his wish, he turned to the crowd.
"Look at these people! They no longer support me! Look! Why would they? I am your leader, and I just left! What kind of leader does that, huh?" Ragnar continued the shouting.
"What kind of king abandons his people? What kind of father abandons his sons? So, who wants to be king? Oh, you know how this works! If you want to be king, you must kill me. Who wants to be king?" Ragnar finished his speech looking around, waiting for somebody to make the first move. Hedvig stepped forward, ready to stop Ragnar, when Ubbe raised a sword.
"King Ubbe" Ragnar smiled at his son, looking proud "What are you waiting for?" He asked after seeing the doubt in his son's eyes "Are you afraid?"
"Be a man!" Ragnar shouted. Ubbe looked like he felt sorry for his father and dropped the sword in front of him. Ragnar only chuckled as the crowd started to disperse. The Ragnarssons looked at their father one last time and they left too.
Hedvig stepped next to Ragnar, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Come on Ragnar, we should go" Ragnar only shook his head before turning around.
"I have to find Björn" Ragnar said hurrying away. Hedvig didn't follow him, just sighed and looked around herself. Yes, it was good to be home, nothing changed, yet everything was different.
