7. Normality
"Iris, please, sit down. I'll get it." I hear Pietro laugh at me when I stand on my tippy toes to try and grab a glass from the top shelf of a cabinet in the kitchen.
"I CAN GRAB MY OWN DANG GLASS. I'M NOT FOUR." I shout back as my fingers barely brush against the glass' side before I shout a string of profanities in Russian. "I AM A GROWN WOMAN WHY CAN I NOT GET MY OWN GLASS HOLY CHEEZE-ITS." I shout and drop back onto my heels and send the glass on the shelf a heated glare.
"Iris, just let him get the glass for you!" I hear Steve shout from his position in living area where a television is turned on with Doctor Who playing. I guess Steve hasn't caught up on this age's biggest shows. Tony's been making the Cap marathon the show all morning. Poor Steve. Thankfully for him, Wanda is over there sitting on a couch with Vision, explaining how and why things work the way they do when Steve has questions about the show. I mean, I don't really know how she knows all this stuff. I assume maybe Tony forced her to watch it also while I was gone. Anyways, I guess Steve hasn't grasped the concept of sci-fi yet. I can only imagine his confusion when it comes time for him to watch Supernatural.
"Because I want to do it myself!" I shout back, slamming my palms down on the counter after I've turned to face the lounge area.
"Tony!" I hear Sam yell from his chair next to the Cap. "The kids are fighting again!"
"Kids, kids, stop fighting. You're all grounded." I gape at Stark with my eyebrows pulled together disbelievingly.
"Tony Stark, you cannot ground me." I point an accusatory finger at him.
"Pepper! Everybody's fighting!" Now Wanda shouts from where she sits on the couch next to Vision. A split second later, Pepper peeks her head into the room and gives the entire team a chilling look. She previously was in an office across the hall. Ms. Potts is here to getting everything straight for the New Avengers after everything was moved from Stark Tower to this location.
"Stop fighting." My eyes instinctively drop and avert from where she's standing.
"Yes ma'am." I respectfully say and hear a sigh before Pepper's heels click against the concrete floors as she walks away. Then I look up and send a snarky glare where Pietro's sitting on a bar stool, grinning triumphantly at me. "What are you smiling about you soggy biscuit?" I grumble and push myself away from where I was standing at the counter. A second later, Pietro pulls out a grabby claw and sets it on the counter before leaning on his elbows while resting his chin in the palms of his hands. He continues to smile like a lovesick puppy. I gasp at him, eyes wide. "T-rex arm extensions!" I reach out for it but before my fingers can get even remotely close to it, Pietro is across the room dangling it from one of his fingers enticingly. "Pietro! No, come back! I'll take back what I said." I slowly exit from behind the kitchen counter.
"Take what back?" He taunts, letting the grabby claw swing precariously from his finger.
"I take back saying that the X-Men are just copy caTS NOW GUYS GET HIM!" I abruptly shout and before Pietro can move this time Clint tackles Pietro sideways into a couch and Wanda shouts 'four points!' I'm near to a fit of laughter as Natasha walks in and throws a yellow strip of cloth at the two overgrown wrestling children. I don't even know where she got it but whatever.
"Foul." She says, unenthusiastic, before moving into the area Steve, Sam, Wanda, and Vision are sitting, watching, and discussing the impossibilities of Doctor Who. I snicker to myself, just glad that everybody is getting on fine.
"How was that a foul? I call BS." Tony shakes his head before getting up from where he was working on a new project of his at the long conference table to my right. Apparently, this device is supposed to look and work like a normal watch but can transform into one of his Iron Man gloves in a second should he need it to. Ever the inventor is he...
▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁
"I AM INVINCIBLE!" I shout, wielding two grabby claws. I only look down when I get shot in the leg with a soft Nerf bullet. I look down, confused for a moment before looking up to find that Sam Wilson is positioned behind an overturned couch with a half-guilty half-amused looking Clint. "Did you just?" I lift a brow at him, pointing one of the claws at the two of them. I watch Sam's head disappear and see Clint start laughing. "How dare you peasants." I sigh and glare at the human bird, causing his eyes to widen before he hurriedly lowers his head behind the safety of the couch back. "Pietro, I'm wounded!" I shout before a whipping wind suddenly alerts me to Pietro's presence. Works every time.
"Where? Are you okay? Do I need to get Tony?" He grabs my wrist and lifts my arm up tentatively, searching for an injury before zipping to my other side to grab my face, turning it side to side to check my face. I reach out, grabby claw in hand, and swat at his hand before pointing at the fallen Nerf bullet at my feet.
"I've been shot by delinquents." I point over to where I hear snickering and laughter coming from behind the couch. Pietro narrows his eyes quickly and is about to rush over there but I grab his arm before he can go. I beckon him closer and stand on my toes until he lowers his head so I can whisper in his ear. After I pull away, smirking, he turns and looks me in the eye with a devilish grin on his face. He swooshes away before returning seconds later with a water gun in hand. I nod at him and set my grabby claws down on the kitchen counter a few steps away. Pietro then hands me the water gun and I nod toward the couches. He zips over to the back of the couch in a blink of an eye and shouts as loud as he can, causing Sam and Clint to scream and jump up, giving me perfect shot to douse them with the water gun. "Never prey on the weak you crusty brussel sprouts!" I declare while enjoying their squirming and shouting as they try to avoid the water like cats. Thank the lord Steve and Natasha aren't here to end our fun. A smirking Pietro appears at my side a second later, enjoying watching me take my revenge. "Ah yes, this is so much better than therapy." I jest, offering him the water gun once I'm done with it. He takes it and then simply reaches behind me and sets it down on the counter. The pale haired speedster looks down at me before wrapping an arm around my waist, pulling me to his side. I wrap an arm around his back and grin up at him. "Thanks for this. For just a normal day."
"My pleasure, Iris." Pietro smiles back at me.
▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁
Later that night after dinner with the team, I find myself holding a set of cards against my chest while sitting on a couch in the lounge area. Just having one day of being as normal as a superhero can do wonders for my mind and for helping me regain my bearings. I smile to myself, pleased with the ordinary day it's been. I shift my attention back up and watch Steve, Natasha, and Sam closely. Natasha sits across from me, on the other side of the coffee table, while Sam sits to my right and Steve to my left. We've been playing Uno for about twenty minutes, still awaiting a winner. The lot of us have been playing dirty, save Steve, who insists on playing fairly.
His loss seeing as he's gonna lose.
Currently, he has an assortment of about fifteen cards, Sam has five, Natasha has two, and I have three. All of us have been keeping our cards close as Tony will come over every once in awhile and try to take a peek at our cards. He's done it successfully twice, getting Rogers both times. The first time he told us all that Steve had mainly blue cards and no yellow, so Sam changed the color to yellow. Thankfully for me, I had mainly yellow cards at that time and was able to unload most of them that round. Then we continued for another five minutes before Stark strolled by again, declaring that Steve had a bunch of red and yellow cards. That's when Natasha changed the color to blue and the rest of us kept skipping Steve. Or we'd throw down a reverse card right before it was Steve's play so he'd keep missing his turns. Needless to say, he was fuming and was now probably planning revenge.
As of now, the color is green. In my hand, I have a green and blue card and a draw four wild card. I don't know what Sam, Tasha, or Steve have, but just by looking at Sam, I can tell he's got something good. He hasn't stopped smiling since he drew a card his last play. Steve doesn't seem to care anymore because I assume he doesn't think he'll win. Romanoff is as stoic as ever and I can't even get an idea of what kind of cards she has. I'm just glad I'm not on either side of her. She's been ruthless this entire game.
Steve tentatively reaches out and places a green card down and then Nat places a blue card with the same number as Steve's card down while calling 'Uno.' Sam groans and slaps his cards face-down on the table as he's forced to draw a card. I softly chuckle to myself and slap my only blue card down, making it Roger's turn again. He looks sideways at Natasha and me before slamming hIS ENTIRE DECK DOWN. HIS ENTIRE DECK WAS BLUE. "What in the name of high heavens, Steve!" I shout while slamming my cards and hands down on the table. Sam throws his cards down as well right after picking them back up. Natasha starts laughing while setting her card down face-up, revealing that she has a red skip card.
The rest of the team are divided at the other end of the room at the long conference table either playing Clue or Monopoly. My outburst and Natasha's laughing cause everybody to look over at us. Steve sits back in his chair, folding his hands together over his abdomen while giving us a smug smile. "How long were you waiting to do that?" I glare at Steve from my seat and he shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly. "Ridiculous." I shake my head and stand up, stretching my legs before trodding into the kitchen to get a glass of water. "I'm gonna marathon The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings." I tell my teammates before chugging the water I've poured in one go. I hear soft murmuring from Natasha and Sam as they stand up and make their way over to the others. Steve seems to settle in where he sits and flashes me a smile as I return. I lift a soft blanket off the back of the couch before sitting down myself. "You ever seen these movies?" I ask Rogers, who just shakes his head. "Well then, hope you can keep up." I chuckle as I swing the blanket over my legs. I grab the T.V. remote off the coffee table and hit the power button before I stare blankly at the T.V., unsure of what to do next. "Hey FRIDAY, can you put the first Hobbit movie on, please?" I ask and snuggle into the blanket.
"Of course, Iris." I nod my appreciation as the movie begins to play on the flat screen hanging on the wall to my right. A second later, Clint waltzes over, the proud winner of Clue. He sits in the armchair to the right of the couch after spinning it around so he can watch with us. I hear shuffling and surprisingly I see Pietro actually walking over to the couch. Walking. Those Winchesters must've started Armageddon again.
"May I?" Pietro asks, motioning to the seat that's to the left of me. I nod my consent and he plops down next to me, draping his arm across the back of the couch. We share a brief smile before turning our attention to the beginning of the movie. Soon after, the rest of the Avenger clan make their way over and find seats to watch with us.
All in all, not a bad day.
