44. Conflict Breeds Catastrope

▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁

Once everybody gets moving, it doesn't take the group long to change. Wanda and I hop into the van to change, while the guys change outside. I'm not sure what their situation is and I don't care to know. All I know is I'm thankful Sharon thought of Bucky and me when she got Steve and Sam their gear. The two of us now have suits we could wear that would provide us protection. I have my suit that was specially designed by Tony nearly a year ago.

After everybody had changed into their suits, Wanda and I exit the van. We all gather in one area and Steve begins to pair up teams. Clint and Wanda are one team, Bucky and Sam are another, Pietro and I are one, and Steve and Scott are a team. Oh, Wanda filled me in on who Mr. Lang is. He seems like any normal Captain America fangirl. I like him, he seems like a real down to earth guy.

Once paired up, we got our assignments. Clint and Wanda stay in the parking garage, Barnes and Sam head to the terminals, Steve and Scott head out to draw Stark and company to the Helicopter, and Pietro and I wait off the tarmac by the grounded planes. Steve's idea is to keep us spread out to cover every inch of the airport, and to keep all of us from getting caught by being in one place. Its a good plan, actually. It even gives Pietro and I time to talk.

"Hey, I gotta say, I like the new suit." I say, motioning to his new outfit. It's not unlike the attire he wore during the Sokovia incident, but the color scheme is different. The shirt is still made of an athletic material, his pants made of durable material, and this time a pair of boots. His shirt is a morph of black, silver, and a deep near turquoise color. To be honest, I rather liked this outfit more than his last. Pietro gives me a tiny smile. He then looks back up at me with curiosity.

"Well, now that we've got a moment...care to fill me in on your adventure?" Pietro asks while leaning against the landing gear of the plane we're hiding out behind. My cheeks puff out with air as I run my hands through my hair before pulling it back into a ponytail. I tap my earpiece once, shutting off the coms so nobody can hear me drone on about how all of this came to be, but keep it on so I can hear everybody else. Pietro mimics me.

"Might as well." I place my hands on my hips as I think of the best way to condense the story. "Well, I got to Vienna and we met up with Sharon Carter who gave us a file on what the CIA had on Barnes. This gave me a head start on not only finding him hiding out in Romania but also led me to discover there was an imposter." I lift one brow with an unimpressed look. Pietro smiles at me. "Still don't know who the imposter is, but I do know that it was a setup and a trap to get Barnes out of hiding." I shift my weight as I recount the adventure. "Then we tracked him down where he was staying in Romania, got caught up with the police and T'Challa there, went running around in the underground highway before getting cornered. I got electrocuted and woke up in the process of being moved to Berlin where the Joint Task Force HQ was...James was supposed to be having a psych evaluation...but that didn't happen." One side of my mouth turns upward in a tired smile. "Then an imposter psychiatrist apparently said a few words which triggered Barnes into becoming The Winter Solider, we made a mess on the way out, found ourselves holed up in a mechanics shop until we knew for sure he wouldn't kill us..." I tap my chin thoughtfully. "We met back up with Sharon Carter, who gave us our equipment and then we met you here. At least, that's the very condensed and straightforward story. I can give you more details later if you really need them." Pietro nods slowly, taking it all in.

"And...this T'Challa guy?" My speedster inquires.

"He's the one who sliced my arm." I glance down at the wound beginning to scab over. Even with an increased rate of healing, this wound wasn't anywhere near being close to being fully healed. It's certainly deeper than I had originally thought. Thankfully it hadn't gotten infected otherwise the whole process would be taking even longer.

"What about Barnes?" I narrow one of my eyes at Pietro.

"I think he's alright. He remembered me. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Haven't gotten the time to see what exactly he remembers about my past yet." My boyfriend nods slowly in understanding. He doesn't seem jealous by any means, which relieves me.

I've got a great guy, I really hope this whole situation doesn't mess our relationship up.

I glance at him lovingly as he takes a moment to keep an eye out for Steve. I know there's an oncoming storm, an inevitable battle, and I can't let myself get too distracted. I can't let someone get hurt. Releasing a shaky breath, I roll my shoulders to dissipate the tension in them before I press my finger to my earpiece to turn it back on. Pietro does the same as we watch Steve jog into view. Now, we wait.

"Wow, it's so weird how you run into people at the airport. Don't you think that's weird?" Tony's voice travels over our earpieces.

"Definitely weird." Rhodes.

"Hear me out, Tony. That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this." Steve says. Pietro and I give each other a look before standing up straighter.

"Captain." The distinct voice of T'Challa.

"Your Highness." Is the next phrase we hear. My eyebrows pull together as I sideways glance at Pietro.

"Uh, now might be a good time to tell you T'Challa is the King of Wakanda, the one who sliced my arm, and I think he's kinda into me..." I state hesitantly. I watch as Pietro lifts a brow at me before rolling his eyes and smiling to himself. I can't help but grin.

"Anyways...Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in. That was 24 hours ago. Can you help a brother out?" Tony casually asks Steve like it's no big deal.

"You're after the wrong guy." Steve replies.

"Your judgment is askew. Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday." Tony snaps, forgetting all niceties.

"And there are five more super soldiers just like him." Cap cuts Stark off before he can continue. "I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't." Steve continues less aggressively.

"Steve..." Natasha's voice comes over coms. "you know what's about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?" She cautiously questions. Then there's a brief silence.

"Alright, I've run out of patience. Underoos!" Tony calls when Steve doesn't reply to Nat's question. "Nice job, kid." Tony praises as a young kid dressed in a red and blue morph suit looking outfit flies out of nowhere, steals Cap's shield, webs his hands together, and then lands on a nearby luggage puller. I lift a brow at Pietro and he rolls his eyes.

"Alright, I want to know where Tony keeps his stash of secret superheroes." I grumble and cross my arms over my chest.

"What is he wearing?" Bucky asks incredulously.

"Well, Tony did call him Underoos..." Clint infers and I can hear a snort come from Sam over the line.

"Thanks!" I'm assuming morph suit underwear dude says in response to Tony's praise before he rambles on.

"Oh, God." I laugh. "He's a baby." This earns roaring laughter from everyone. "No wonder he's called Underoos!" The laughter intensifies and even Pietro cackles next to me.

"You've been busy." Steve states calmly and the laughter finally dies down enough so we can listen to the conversation again.

"And you've been a complete idiot!" Tony aggressively spits at Steve. "Draggin in Clint..." He shakes his head. "'Rescuing' Wanda and Pietro from a place they don't even wanna leave, a safe place!" Tony raises his voice. "And your buddy almost got Iris killed!" Stark's voice is several octaves higher now as he ends his statement. Steve says nothing. "I'm trying to keep --" Tony continues on before stopping to take a deep breath. "I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart." He finally deadpans. But Steve, ever graceful, replies calmly.

"You did that when you signed." Steve's calmness seems to rile Tony up.

"All right, we're done." Stark shakes his head. "You're gonna turn Barnes over, you're gonna come with us, now, because it's us or a squad of J-SOC guys with no compunction about being impolite." Tony once again lifts his voice as anger makes him red in the face. Steve turns his head away from Stark and looks towards where Pietro and I are waiting further down the tarmac in the shadows. "Come on." Tony whispers. I shake my head at Steve when we make eye contact.

"We found it." Sam's voice rings over coms. "Their Quinjet's in hanger five, north runway." Steve suddenly lifts his hands into the air and Clint fires an arrow from the parking garage, separating the webbing from Cap's hands. Tony swivels on his feet and faces the direction Wanda and Clint are.

"All right, Lang." Steve says.

"Hey guys, something..." The kid in the red and blue suit begins before Lang shifts back to regular size, punches him in the face, and steals Cap's shield back before retreating to Steve's side.

"What the hell was that?" Rhodes questions in confusion.

"I believe this is yours, Captain America." Lang declares proudly.

"Oh, great." Tony grumbles and then I can no longer hear what else he has to say. It's like he's turned off external speakers and has reverted to his team's earpiece frequency so that only they will hear him. I shift my gaze over to Pietro, who is worriedly looking over to the parking garage he knows his sister is in. Suddenly, Tony's external speakers are back. "Rhodey, you wanna take Cap?"

"Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes." Rhodes states for all to hear as Tony flies over to the parking deck where Clint and Wanda are. Steve throws his shield into the air and hits the War Machine in the chest.

"Barnes is mine!" T'Challa shouts before running in the direction of the terminal. Once Steve gets his shield back, he chases after T'Challa. That's when my gaze shifts to Natasha who faces off with Lang.

"Oh, this is going to be goo-" Before I can finish my statement, I'm suddenly thrown off my feet and into a metal support beam that's holding up the awning on the ground floor of the airport. I let out a low groan as I push myself up with my arms. I shake the hair from my face to see Vision hovering above the ground, his cape billowing in the wind as Pietro defensively stands between me and Wanda's robot ex-boyfriend.

"I told you, Pietro, this will only end in a catastrophe." The Vision says, staring down the speedster before his eyes turn to me and the Mind Stone set into his forehead begins to glow brightly.
