41. Phone Calls
After stepping away from the group, I draw my phone out of my pocket and silently praise myself for purchasing a waterproof case. Probably one of my only good decisions. My first instinct is to call Pietro and tell him I'm not dead yet, but considering our situation I decide to call Clint first. Thankfully he's already in my contacts, having programmed himself into my phone when I first got back to New York. I guess he sees the twins and I as his own kids and felt like it'd be a good idea for the three of us to have his number on speed dial just in case.
I scroll through contacts until I reach the name 'Caw Caw' and select it. I then dial the number before lifting my phone to my ear. I easily rest one hand on my hip as I stare blankly at the concrete floor below my feet. I'm exhausted from the past few days and I can feel my muscles beginning to scream every time I move. I know it's not healthy, I really should get some sleep, but it just doesn't look like I'd be able to any time right now. The ringing on my end of the phone halts, there's a brief pause, followed by an anxious 'hello?'
"Hey, Clint." I chuckle breathlessly.
"Sparky?" He questions and I can hear a chair scraping across the floor on his end. "You know Pietro's called me like fifteen times asking about you. Are you alright? Have you called him yet? Told him you're not dead like he so dearly believes?" He asks and I can hear him walking through his house over the line.
"Hey, yeah, uh no. I haven't talked to him yet. But I will. I just uh, I gotta ask a favor..." I trail off and wince as there's a silence.
"And what's that?" Clint asks slowly.
"Uh, you been watching the news recently?" I question.
"You and Cap are in some deep waters right now, aren't you?" He voices.
"...yeah." I say quietly and shift my weight.
"What do you need me to do?" He asks with determination in his voice.
"Uh, you're gonna need to get Wanda and Pietro from HQ and then meet us...somewhere. I'll text you the details once Cap has a plan..." I fill him in.
"You guys don't even have a plan yet?" Clint asks in exasperation.
"Yeah yeah, see this is what happens when you leave." I laugh and hear him chuckle along with me. "Will you help us?"
"Alright. Text me the details when you can. Be careful in the meantime, Sparky." He says in a commanding, fatherly tone.
"You too, dad." I reply sarcastically before grinning to myself. I remove the phone from my ear and then hang up. I smile at the screen of my phone for a moment, glad to know Clint's alright and willing to help us. I guess that's what friends are for though.
I go back through my contacts and skim through them until I come upon the contact 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and pause. My thumb hovers over the name, but never makes contact as I hear Sam calling my name. I turn with my phone still in hand and lift a brow at him. "You guys come up with a plan yet?" I question.
"Yeah." Sam asks as he approaches me. "Who'd you call?"
"Clint. He said he's with us." I smile down at the screen of my phone briefly before looking back at Wilson. "You want to update him on the plan then?" I ask and lift a brow. Sam nods his head.
"Mind if I just use your phone? Mine got taken." I nod in understanding and hand him over the device, watching as he scrolls through the contacts. I watch as he lifts a brow before he looks up at me. "'Caw Caw,' really?" He asks. I shrug with a chuckle.
"Clint's idea, not mine." I move past him, gently patting his shoulder. "Let me know when you're done." I see him nod before brushing past him. My feet take me to the wing Bucky and Steve are in and I pause in the doorway. I guess I can give them the good news while Sam talks to Clint. Barnes is still looking at his hands and Steve is watching him with sad eyes. He looks like a longing Golden Retriever. "So, where we headed off to then?" I clasp my hands behind my back as I enter the room. Both sets of eyes turn towards me.
"Leipzig Airport, after we make a quick stop." Steve informs me.
"Ah, sounds good." I nod and tuck my hands into the back pockets of my jeans. "Clint said he's with us. Sam's going to give him the details of the plan. Not sure if I really wanna know what that plan is though." My eyes skirt to my boots for a moment before lifting to Steve. He looks apprehensive.
"You look like a raccoon." I hear a gruff voice say slowly. My eyebrows pull together as I turn my attention to Barnes, who is looking at me with scrunched eyebrows. He looks...stressed and confused at the same time. Like he's putting pieces of a puzzle together. I can't exactly blame him though.
"Pardon?" I ask with a sassy tone, cocking one brow up as I shift my weight to fully look at him.
"A raccoon." He points under his eyes while looking at me. My lips pull into a frown as I look over at Steve questioningly.
"Your mascara is either really smudged or you're very tired." He elaborates. My mouth parts partially as I nod.
"Probably a bit of both..." I huff then look at Barnes. "I wouldn't be making comments considering you looked like a raccoon a few years back, Barnes." I watch as his lips twitch upwards. "Plus I look like 10x better than you." I sigh dramatically and swing my hair over my shoulder, causing both men to chuckle. I grin as they express their amusement before it falters. Bucky is the first to pick up on it, seeing as he's probably the most observant of our little criminal group. Steve notices Buck's change in demeanor before looking to me.
"You alright, Iris?" He asks, taking a step closer to me with an outstretched hand. He holds a worried look on his face.
"Yeah...I guess I'm just feeling a bit homesick, missing you-know-who, and the sarcastic remarks he always responds with." I sadly smile to myself and watch as realization dawns on Steve's face. He gives a curt nod.
"Have you called him?" He inquires. I shake my head. I can tell Bucky's listening intently to our conversation by the silence he's giving and the intrigued look in his eyes.
"I guess I really should do that, shouldn't I?" I falsely smile and get a nod from Cap. "I just haven't had the time."
"Go." He removes his hand from my shoulder and easily waves me off. I give him a grateful smile and stalk in the direction of Sam, who's finishing up on my cell. He sees me approach and grins at me, offering me back my phone. I lift one brow and take the phone from him. Instead of answering my silent question, he gives me a knowing smile and moves away. I lift the phone to my ear and pause a second.
"Hello?" I ask slowly.
"I thought you said you weren't going to get hurt!" A familiar accented voice shouts over the phone. My chest constricts and it feels like my ribs are closing in around my heart painfully. I feel a burning erupt behind my eyes.
"I said I'd try." I say with a smile as my voice cracks. "I also said I was going to keep Steve out of trouble. Guess that worked out really well, huh?"
"God, Iris. Sam told me what happened. Are you alright? He told me you were, but I don't believe him. Your arm is injured, who did that? Is it infected? Did you get it treated? Did Steve's friend hurt you? I saw the news, he escaped. He could be coming after you. You need to get out of there-" Pietro begins to speak at inhuman speeds, but somehow I manage to catch every single word of it. I burst into a happy laughter. I'm so overwhelmed with joy at just hearing his voice that I can't find it in me to be annoyed with him for being so concerned about my health. I could care less about my tired muscles and aching bones. I don't even care about the fact I've already had a mental breakdown.
"God, I love you." I say and the line goes dead silent. My laughter stops as I begin to wonder if I accidentally hung up or if I lost connection.
"You love me?" Comes across the speaker and a burning sensation invades the blood vessels across my cheeks. Hm. Didn't expect the first time I'd say that would be over the phone after doing something incredibly risky.
"Well, obviously. Why else would I keep going on dates with you?" I joke happily, trying to make it less weird if at all possible.
"Is it bad that I really want to kiss you right now?" He asks, his voice dropping to a whisper. I can hear the deep longing in his voice. We've each been on missions that have kept us apart for a week or two at a time, but this is different. I've managed to make myself a criminal and say I love you in the span of hours. Who knows how this is going to affect our relationship now.
"You'll get your chance when Clint comes to pick you and your sister up." I tell him vaguely.
"Clint? Picking us up?" He questions, his voice returning to that of a more normal tone.
"Just wait. He'll explain everything regarding our plan to you. For now, I really gotta go. We've got a few things to do..." I respond. "And I promise not to injure myself. I'll tell you all the details of my little adventure here in Europe as soon as I can." I quickly add. I hear a soft sigh over the phone. "Hey, it's fine. I'll be seeing you shortly. Love you, alright?"
"Be safe, Iris. I love you too."
